5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best single volume reference on the market!
After having purchased hundreds of reference books on AFV's over the years, this is the book I keep going back to the most. From WWI up through modern, the sheer amount of information included is staggering, especially considering it features many designs you will not find in even more focused collections.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb work for those interested in classic armor
As was indicated in a previous review, if you need up-to-the-minute data on modern Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs), this is not the book for you. However, that is just about its only weakness.
4-0 out of 5 stars More coffee table than reference
I'm a big fan of anything Chris Foss writes, publishes or edits. His facts aren't always spot on - his deadlines for publication obviously have him rush and cut corners. I purchased this book in December 2003 and have spent many hours flipping the pages. Overall - I enjoy owning and reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid resource
This book is excellent in breaking down the origin of the Waffen SS units and in providing information on important Waffen personnel.I especially liked how it avoided lumping all the units and all the individuals into a single group. It recognizes the differences between elite combat formations and thugs behind the lines who are commiting genocide. It also recognizes that individuals within a given unit differ in terms of fanaticism and indoctrination. It does not address general German (or European) antisemitism and its role, which is probably better tackled by holocaust books like the excellent Hitler's Willing Executioners.I would have preferred more battle history though. This book goes into extreme detail on the role of Germanics (non-Germans of German racial stock) in the SS, but there is relatively little detail on the key battles. All in all, I would say that this book and The Waffen SS at War are complementary. This book tells about the real people involved very well, but does a poor job with the battle history.Waffen SS at War tells the battle history but does a poor job making the people real, rather than simple demonic Nazi stereotypes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing reference for World War Two buffs!
Marc J. Rikmenspoel's book is one of the most detailed book's available on the Waffen-SS. It gives the background and summary of operations of all divisions, and has outstanding diagrams that outline the structure of early war motorized infantry divisions, panzer divisions, panzer-grenadier divisions, mountain divisions, cavalry divisions, and grenadier (infantry) divisions. It describes both the German and non-German troops of the Waffen-SS, which believe it or not included volunteers from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Belorussia, Czechia, Estonia, France, Georgia, Hungary, India, Ireland (recruited from the IRA), Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, North Caucasus, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, and Ukraine!

Editorial Review

From the rise of Greece to the fall of Rome, this superbly illustrated volume isa wonderful account of the warriors and battles that dominated Europe and the Near Eastfor more than 1,000 years. The story begins at Troy, drawing upon Homeric legend and modern archaeological evidence. It continues through Greece's Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, Alexander the Great, Rome's Punic Wars, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, and the barbarianinvasions. Although John Warry's text is worth reading, the color drawings of uniforms, equipment, weapons, warships, siege engines, and more are the real highlight and make the chronicleextremely accessible. 5-0 out of 5 stars All you wanted to know about Greek and Roman Military!
This volume contains details of battles, of famous strategic details that are hard to find in other books. There are pages on the uniforms and weaponry along with the organization of the entire armies of the times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Ancient Warfare
This is an excellent book on ancient warfare. It covers warfare from as far back as the Trojan War to the fall of the Western Roman Empire.John Warry makes the book a lot more interesting than other books of this era by accompanying the text with detailed drawings of soldiers, weapons, and galleys and also by adding several fairly detailed maps of time periods and battles. The book also has a time line that runs along the bottom of every page that provides info on events occurring around the world as well as summarizing the info in the chapters.
5-0 out of 5 stars Greeks, Romans, and Empires, oh my!
Very informative and interesting synopsis of warfare from early greek times through the Roman Empire. Features many illustrations, too, that give the reader an even better picture of ancient combat. The battle descriptions and maps are the best part though, as they take you stepwise through each major conflict of the ancient world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful and concise
I borrowed this book from a friend and liked it so much I bought one for myself. It has a lot of concise useful information for anyone who occasionally comes upon a weapon issue in their work life, great for SCA/ reinactment buffs, it is also a good reference for children who are learning about historic wars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weapons organized by function rather than era or region
"Weapons" is rare, possibly unique among reference works on arms; it is organized by function rather than era, region, or alphabetically.Accordingly, you'll see a current police baton on the same page as a several thousand year old club. The functions begin with arming the hand (a rock, for example) and proceeds (more or less) by complexity, ending with aircraft, missiles, nukes, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars A brief (and good) overview in weapons.
I enjoyed this book and find it interesting for the more of people who likes to know a bit of everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars star wars encyclopedia
i found the content great especially for it being the original trilogy and comic books as well as the mini movies. it was also suprising that it was current up to the modified episodes of 4-6.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really crummy...
I am terribly sorry I bought this book. I'm a big fan of George Lucas' Star Wars work, but this is an expensive edition dealing all the novels written on his idea, and doesn't cover anything about Episodes I, II and III. Where is Jar-jar Binks? What about Qi-gon? Nope, not a single line.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent *THEN*, Not so hot now....
This was an excellent book when it came out, and just glancing at the other reviews gives you an idea of what the good qualities are- and there are many.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slightly flawed revised edition of a useful reference work
The revised edition of Stanton's work is primarily a straight reprint of the 1984 edition. It's worthwhile to have such a reprint, as the original edition was invaluable to someone interested in tracing Army Ground Force units during the Second World War. The new material in the Revised Edition is the Front Matter and an addendum at the end correcting those errors found in the original addition and adding such additional information as has been found over the years. There is no indication in the main text of those entries that have errata or additions. It would have been preferable had the entire text been reset or some simple indicator been placed alongside entries with material in the addendum.
4-0 out of 5 stars Full of data on every regiment and battalion in US Army
This book is a "must-have" for those who wish to have a comprehensive resource for the organization of the US Army Ground Forces, 1939-1946.Unfortunately, despite the title, the book's information isstrictly limited to Army Ground Forces, and it has nothing on Army ServiceForces, Army Air Forces, or any other service. However, all the Engineerunits are included, even the General Service Regiments. What the book doesprovide is a way of tracing the theaters of service of every battalion orhigher unit covered by it.A brief narrative history is provided for eachdivision.Often, two division organizations are listed to show changesover time, such as the National Guard's switch from "square" to"triangular" divisions 1940-42.The level of informationdecreases with unit size, and for battalions only the startup date, shipdate, return date, disbandment date, and campaigns served in are provided. Dates of attachment to and detachment from higher headquarters are providedfor regiments and divisions, and units temporarily attached to a divisionare listed with it.Unit awards are not addressed at any level, except tolist campaigns served in.The book makes a valiant effort to track thenumerous times that units were re-organized or converted from regiments tobattalions, but I have detected at least one case where the book"lost" a unit.Despite the book's cover, unit patches areprovided only for regiments, and the patches shown are often not the onesused in most of the war.Tables of equipment and personnel are providedfor divisions, regiments, and selected battalion types. In summary, thisbook is a must for the data-hungry, but will probably just gather dust at aVFW post due to lack of unit award and unit patch information. ... This is a CLASSIC reference book on Revolutionary War artifacts!5-0 out of 5 stars The best book written on Revolutionary War artifacts.
George C. Neumann and Frank J. Kravic have really done it this time. Hands down this is the best book written on artifacts of the American Revolution. From A to Z you can look up nearly anything that was used in the War ForIndependence. Great for amateurs and pros alike it is an indispensablereference tool especially with museums and private collections. Verypopular with online auctions as this book is referred to often. Greatphotographs that are clear with a brief description of every item. Some ofthese artifacts are now on display at Valley Forge. For collectors andhistorians alike this work is unparalleled and for over 20 years has beenthe "bible" for collecting artifacts of the American Revolution. No other work has come close. Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Written with a strong anti-American bias
If you like your history served up anti-American style, this book is for you.But if not, keep looking.Like so many modern authors of American History books, Boatner is on a mission to counter the overly pro-American history books used in schools for many years. So he wrote this with an at least as bad anti-American bias.Sorry, two wrongs don't make a right.Does ANYONE write balanced history books?I'll leave you with a very interesting FACT (though untold in any review or description of this book):He lived in Paris when he wrote this book and did *all his research* there. That's Paris, FRANCE.Should tell you all you need to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definite must have!!!!
Anyone who is mildly intersted or intensely obsessed with the American Revolution needs to have this reference on their bookshelf!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential........
Mark Boatner's "Encyclopedia of the American Revolution" is an indespensable guide for understanding those who participated, battles that were fought and leaders whom, even though they may have played a smaller role, guided the republic, fought the republic and observed the republic from its inception.

5-0 out of 5 stars For high school to college library collections!
Both high school and college-level history collections as well as specialty libraries will consider the four- volume set AMERICANS AT WAR: SOCIETY, CULTURE, AND THE HOMEFRONT to be an essential acquisition: each volume packs in an A-Z encyclopedic reference with sidebars of information and plenty of bibliographic references for further reading. From the battle histories of historical monuments such as Bunker Hill to the history and symbolism of various flags, occupation patterns during the Civil War and their lasting effects, medicine during World War I, and sports during World War II, each volume in the series tackles major social and cultural developments of different wartime experiences, reaching deep into the heart of war's effects at home. Highly recommended.
