5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK
This is a CLASSIC reference book on Revolutionary War artifacts!5-0 out of 5 stars The best book written on Revolutionary War artifacts.
George C. Neumann and Frank J. Kravic have really done it this time. Hands down this is the best book written on artifacts of the American Revolution. From A to Z you can look up nearly anything that was used in the War ForIndependence. Great for amateurs and pros alike it is an indispensablereference tool especially with museums and private collections. Verypopular with online auctions as this book is referred to often. Greatphotographs that are clear with a brief description of every item. Some ofthese artifacts are now on display at Valley Forge. For collectors andhistorians alike this work is unparalleled and for over 20 years has beenthe "bible" for collecting artifacts of the American Revolution. No other work has come close. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the Philadelphia Eagle fan.
A comprehensive easy read.Full of facts, and interesting stories about the franchise that is really "America's" team.Little bios of many of the personalities that have worn the green and white.Every time I opened up the book there was something new to learn.Written for the everyday Joe, you will not be dissapointed if you love the Eagles. The Eagles are my squad so this may be slightly biased...Shout out to Randall...

4-0 out of 5 stars Profiles in Green & White
The articles on the individual coaches & players is very informative, this alone makes it a must read for any Eagles fan. There is also a comprehensive record of individual & team records plus a year by year run down on the team. The only thing missing is a won-lost record overall, by teams, home & away. Would make a great gift for all your Eagle die-hards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this reference by your side to help your data tell its story
I think anyone who solves serious problems by analyzing data will want to own a copy of this book.Being able to organize data into the right visual image can often make no less a difference than that between seeing the answer to the problem vs. getting lost in the complexity and variation in the data.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, butneed corrections !
I got the book today and just a few minutes of skimming it I found an important mistake( maybe a publisher's fault) : The sigil of Och (pg. 339)is printed with the Phaleg's one and vice-versa pg.370 . I hope I don't find another big errors since someone uses this book to practice without consulting other ones would be lead to a grave mistake and perhaps serious problems since these sigils are used in talismans among other things in cerimonial magic, for example. The author asks to let him know about any incorrections and I wil do that. So my tip is take care with this good book since more faults may be present !

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
It is difficult to say whether the contentious atmosphere that currently exists regarding the legal opinions of the Supreme Court is greater than any other time in the history of the United States. There have been times, especially during the Civil War and World War I when the Supreme Court raised the ire of many a citizen. Some of the "activist" justices, as some of them are now called, could perhaps be designated as "activist light" if compared with some of the justices of the past. This book gives ample evidence for this comparison, but also gives information on a wide variety of legal issues that the Supreme Court has had to deal with throughout its history. It would probably not be read from cover to cover, but instead serves as a general reference for those readers who are not and do not intend to become legal scholars, but are curious as to the reasoning patterns deployed by the justices who sat on the Court. Readers who are approaching this subject for the first time will find many surprises about the Court, both in the opinions expressed by the judges and in their personal histories and backgrounds. It is fair to say that legal opinions are guided predominantly by the historical context in which they are put forth, and this claim seems to gain more substantiation as more articles in this book are read and studied.
5-0 out of 5 stars Massive tome on the Supreme Court.
_The Oxford Companion to the United States Supreme Court of the United States_(Kermit Hall, ed.) is a massive tome containing a vast swath of information: cases, traditions, theories of constitutional interpretations, historical events, and biographies of all of the Supreme Court Justices. It has the same material (word for word) as Kermit Hall's _The Oxford Guide to United States Supreme Court Decisions_ but this is much more worthwhile reference work because it contains more contextual material than the cases themselves. This book is by no means exhaustive, but it provides a very informative overview of what the Supreme Court has been up to for the past two hundred years and the very different personalities serving on the body.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy companion
As the nation prepares to welcome the seventeenth Chief Justice, this book is a wonderful guide to the processes of the least 'media-exposed' branch of the federal government and its highest institution, the Supreme Court.

4-0 out of 5 stars Columbia Encyclopedia Beats Other Encyclopedias on Sacco-Vanzetti Entry
The Sixth edition of The Columbia Encyclopedia notes that " . . . new ballistics tests conducted with modern equipment in 1961 seemed to prove conclusively that the pistol found on Sacco had been used to murder the guard."That concession is not yet in other mainline encyclopedias. The 1983 ballistics test conducted by three ballistics experts chosen by Dr. Henry Lee led to this published conclusion:"Of the caliber .32 Auto cartridges in possession of Nicola Sacco at the time of his apprehension (Exhibit #31), sixteen (16) were manufactured by The Peters Cartridge Company; and, of the sixteen cartridges, six (6) were made on the same machine that made the two Peters fired cartridge cases (Fraher shells) that were recovered from the crime scene."This conclusion is on p. 28 of AFTE Journal (Volume 17, Number 3) July 1985.See two related articles on ballistics by Dr. James E. Starrs in Journal of Forensic Sciences (April and July, 1986).Columbia's bibliography appended to the entry "Sacco-Vanzetti Case" does not cite the 1986 book by Francis Russell, "Sacco and Vanzetti: The Case Resolved."Recall that Judge Charles E. Wyzanski, Jr. wrote to Francis Russell on March 31, 1986, and underlined this statement:"I myself am persuaded by your writings that Sacco was guilty."Editors of The Columbia Encyclopedia have not cited the book on Sacco and Vanzetti (2006) that has new evidence. In the fullness of time this 2006 book will be cited in textbooks created for the survey course in U. S. history.Francis Russell told me in his letter of June 29, 1988:"I too have been distressed by the slant of the encyclopedias and reference books. But I think in time the truth will prevail over these liberal obsessions.Eventually my view will be accepted, not because I am so clever but because facts are facts."One new fact is Charles C. Palmer's letter of June 17, 1921, discovered in the files of Dudley P. Ranney.(See Transcript of the Record, p. 5018.)Palmer's letter deepens our understanding of the testimony on Vanzetti's revolver by Dexter natives Elbridge Atwater and Rexford Slater. It confirms again Vanzetti's guilt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Columbia versus Britannica Concise
I think both books are outstanding, and more complementary than rivals. In fact, I use both. Nevertheless, there are some differences.5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of information in one book

5-0 out of 5 stars The new bible of perennial plants
Definitely an essential, a new classic for the garden library, whether you are accomplished grower or a newcomer, because it is expertly written, without technical jargon - the first really "readable" encyclopedia of plants I know of. It says it covers 5000 plants, but it's really almost 7000 plants, the biggest encyclopedia of perennials ever. Chock-full of fascinating sidebars about planting suggestions, name changes, invasive plants, orchids, etc. Pictures are gorgeous and there are thousands of them. An ultimate reference. Kudos to Graham Rice, the veteran plantsman and wonderful writer, for creating this ultimate encyclopedia. ... Read more

For the earlier review commenting that the formulas are only in Metastock I must comment that this is not the case.
1-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of Technical Market Indicators
I have been in Technical analysis for more than 4 years and have many books on the subject but of all the books I have "The Encyclopedia of Technical Market Indicators" is the most misguided title ever. Motivation for this statement is that the book is almost like an empty vessel. The author relates to numerous indicators and indicates how successful or unsuccessful they are but without explanations which make it difficult to comprehend. Also nowhere in the book does he indicate how these indicators should be used which, in my opinion, should be the essence of a book with this title. The author attempts to correct this on his website at: www.robertwcolby.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of Technical Market Indicators, Second Edit

When I was asked to contribute to this Encyclopedia (I wrote the "annotated bibliography", the lemma on "determinism", and co-authored the lemma on "chaos theory"), I had no idea what it would eventually look like. It was undoubtedly an ambitious project, and the editors were aware that there was no such encyclopedia available yet. This project was a venture, to be sure.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but somewhat misguided
The basic thesis of all essays in "The Invention of Tradition" is that many of the mass, public traditions in various societies of the world (from Scottish kilts to the very concept of tribes in Africa) are well-crafted ("invented") constructs of the 18th/19th centuries, and are not as ancient or immemorial as they are generally believed to be. Parenthetically, the very expression "invention of tradition" is somewhat redundant, since all traditions, as products of human behavior and human imagination rather than the result of natural forces, are invented in one way or another. All of the essays in the book show how this is so, providing an excellent analysis of the origins of these traditions. As such they are very valuable contributions to contemporary social/political history. However, although the tone of the book is that such "invented traditions" were frequently almost imposed and/or used as instruments of political manipulation, it can't be denied that they also very often gave expression to very real feelings - as editor Hobsbawm concedes in his concluding essay. Thus, rather than demonstrating some sort of arbitrary "invention" and manipulation, Prys Morgan's chapter on the Welsh also shows how previous traditions in Wales were revived, reformulated and continuously adapted from the late seventeenth century on to meet various political, social and cultural challenges, thus making the process of invention seem quite "natural." On the other hand, Terence Ranger's essay on Africa is almost disturbing in that it seems to imply that almost every aspect of African politics and society today were bequethed by the continent's former European colonial masters. Hugh Trevor-Roper's chapter on Scotland is useful in that it pinpoints the exact origins of the "highland tradition" and all outer, visual identity markers used by the Scots, but the overall implication seems to be that now that the sham is revealed, the Scots should discard their kilts and bagpipes in shame. It would have been more useful if he had provided an explanation of why Scottish patriots, and others, so eagerly accepted these "invented traditions," and why they are so deeply entrenched and stronger than ever today. This goes for the entire book: it's main value may be in (unitentionally) showing how all traditions are in fact invented in one way or another, and that they become traditions because, at least at the time of their inception, they serve strongly felt political, social, cultural or even economic needs.

4-0 out of 5 stars The truth behind the tartans!
Hugh Trevor-Roper's contribution to this book is priceless. In his chapter "Invention of Tradition: The Highland Tradition of Scotland", he details for the reader where the supposedly "ancient" costume of Scotland came from. The kilt was invented by an English Quaker about 1726 to allow his Highland workmen to more easily move while smelting the iron ore he was extracting. The kilt was thus an expression of the Industrial Revolution rather than an ancient freedom of the heather.5-0 out of 5 stars The real stuff of legend
The principle argumentative thread running through each of this book's essays is that the traditions Europeans hold dear about their respective cultures date back merely to the turn of the 20th century.Far fromlegendarily old, things like Scottish tartans and the English monarchical love of pomp and circumstance date back only to the Victorian era.More tothe point, many traditions aren't even native to the land which celebratesthem.Tartans, the book concludes, are actually northern English ideas, and the "British" love of pageantry comes more from India than fromanything deeply rooted in the gardens of the House of Windsor.Read more

This book has somehow dissapeared from my collection in the last few months. Before that I couldn't understand why some of my friends had so much trouble understanding some simple gardening basics. Now that I no longer have this reference, my garden is failing miserably and I feel quite confused where I used to feel quite clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quick Reference
This is a great overview book. No, it doesn't go into great depth, but it's always my first stop when I'm either curious, troubleshooting or just can't remember when to do what. Lot's of other books offer deeper info on the subject, it's not a handbook on organic technique (I recommend Eliot Coleman for that), but for quick checks and enough info to go squish that bug or leave it be, this helps.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bitterly disappointed
I thought I was getting a 700 page book on organic concepts. Instead, this is a manual which briefly deals with anything garden related. Hundreds of pages are devoted to minimal information about specific plants (I had already purchased much better documention for this purpose) and also topics such as making potpourri, designing a landscape, and making a path. 5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for foodstuffs
This is a great food sourcebook.It doesn't have recipes - it's not a cookbook.
4-0 out of 5 stars natural goodness defined
The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia is the holy grail to anyone embarking on a healthier, greener diet. Wood carries a relaxed, conversational tone through tales of sugar snap pea goodness or the brief history of quinoa, and I love her attention to detail in pointing out surreptitiously refined sugars in the most seemingly safest foods. At times, the lecture waxes a tad over-preachy, but the sheer breadth of foods covered, from South American grains to Asian legumes, makes this book a must-have for any cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent whole foods primer
Sometimes, the trick with books of this nature is being able to find the information you are looking for quickly and easily. There are a number of other books on the market that contain much the same information as this book does (in more detail) but what sets The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia apart is its remarkable ability to simplify the key information down to the most essential basics. Elson Haas' Staying Healthy With Nutrition for example, is an excellent resource but at nearly 1000 pages it requires a bit of digging to get to the specific information you need. The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia is always the first place I check for the basics before researching more specialized, detailed sources. It's to natural food what Ephraim Katz' Film Encyclopedia is to film...namely, the best resource for concise, general overviews.
