5-0 out of 5 stars Solid foundation for the MCAT
Ek bio - this is the STUFF!! I pwned the BS MCAT by reading this book 3 times and difficult topics 2-3 more times. Was able to teach myself microbiology and human physiology with this book. you don't need advance classes like genetics, cell bio, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Manageable study program
After being away from college for 10 years, I have found the MCAT review very comprehensive and manageable. The subjects are divided into separate books, which makes them very portable. The diagrams are fantastic, and the authors' sidenotes clarify what you need to know outright versus what's background info.If you need further help, there are Examcrackers resources for that too, such as flashcards and extra questions for each subject, so you don't have to pay for what you don't need.It is somewhat tailored for those with strong science skills, and weak verbal--the Verbal Reasoning book really walks you through the basics.Since that is my strong suit, I don't need my hand held for that, while I do for Physics, so I guess my only complaint would be that they assume you're a science wizard and verbal dummy, so those of us with the opposite skills don't get the same benefit of that stereotype.I know, probably most medical students fit that mold, but that doesn't mean those of us who have to work a tad harder don't belong in the profession--once you know it, you know it.There's room for all types, as well as a need!Good program overall, I'm very pleased, and would recommend to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book and a lot of material
This book is worth the price! It gives you a lot of material to work with. I studied these the second time I took the MCAT for a period of 4-5 weeks. After which I took my old Princeton exams, I aced them without even touching my old Princeton notes. While admissionsmystery .combook is great/insightful for AMCAS application strategy, I think these set of books are great for the MCAT. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can only buy one MBA admissions book, make it this one...
If you could only buy one book on MBA admissions, make it this book. How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs is the most thorough and comprehensive guide to MBA admissions; Montauk answers nearly every possible question an MBA hopeful could have. The caveat is that because this book is slightly outdated, it is best paired with a more updated book like,"Your MBA Game Plan," by Omari Bouknight and Scott Shrum.Although Montauk has this new edition (I am referencing the 2nd edition, so be sure to get whatever the most recent edition is), I think Your MBA Game Plan puts forth some important, more up-to-date advice that is slightly different, because it comes from the perspective of recent admits to a top b-school.However, it is not nearly as comprehensive as Montauk's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review on "How To Get Into the Top MBA Programs"
The delivery is smooth. The content is nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have - Read as early as possible in the process!
A friend recommended this book to me while I was preparing to apply to business school and I found it invaluable. As a strategy consultant at a "Big Five" from an Ivy undergraduate with the standard GMAT of 700 or above, I could have easily blended in with everyone else with my qualifications. This book helped me to figure out what would help me to stand out at each individual business school. Moreover, it helped me to identify my weaknesses in time to address some of them. For example, because I read this book two years before applying, I had time to become a leader in several community service organizations (instead of just participating) and to take some classes in areas I'd neglected in undergrad. Finally, I was able to choose consulting projects that created a more compelling application. Thanks in large part to this book, I now have an MBA from a top five school. More importantly, the school was the right fit for me and I loved the experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Physics Practice
This book has a pro and a con associated with it. The pro is that it is a plethra of free standing questions and will definitely prepare you for that aspect of the MCAT without a doubt. The con is actually only a semi con...there are no passages in this book which means you won't get practice in scanning for important facts. This isn't the end of the world, though, because the MCAT physical sciences section is highly conceptual, and this book drills the concepts like there's no tomorrow. For practice with passages, you can go to the AAMC site and download a few of their practice tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Physics Practice
I really found this book very, very helpful.I thought it covered every topic on the MCAT.Some of the questions were a little easier than McAT, and some seemed a little more difficult than MCAT, but they all seemed like McAT questions to me.You can't beat the online help offered with this book.THe author himself answers your science questions. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Ivey Guide to Law School Admissions: Straight Advice on Essays, Resumes, Interviews, and More
It is a very good guide for anyone, intresting in applying to Law school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I really liked the no-nonsense advice in this book. Anna Ivey gives you straight up advice on how to get into your safety schools and how to tip the scales in your favor on the schools where you have a 50-50 chance of yes or no. There are some good sample essays in the back of the book that are helpful in crafting your own statement, as well as some bad ones that show you what to avoid. Helpful section on financial aid. If you only buy one book regarding the law school admissions process, The Ivey Guide should be regarded as a great primer to answer all of your questions (whether you are a recent grad or an older returning student, the over represented majority or a URM.) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Exam Style
This book is a hasty review of Orgo, but it covers most of the MCAT material in relatively small number of pages. Although some diagrams are not very helpful, it tells you most of what you need. It is basically a good book if you are a time-pressed pre-med trying to take the MCAT in 2 months. If you have more time, I recommend reading over your orgo textbook once more and doing problem sets in various other MCAT preparation materials (the ones with only MCAT style problems). Hope this helps.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent
This book was decent in that it reviewed some of the fundemental concepts necessary for the MCAT.However, most of the questions were too easy, and none resemble the format of an actual MCAT question (not passage based). There were some errors, but easy to identify. The book was worth having for extra practice if you have the money, but don't expect much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect practice problems for MCAT
Practice is the key to the MCAT.Review is an essential first step, but is only part of the complete preparation for the MCAT.ORGO 1001 will help you guys ace the Biological Science questions.Everything from stereochemistry to lab techniques is in this book. There are over 90 stereochemistry questions alone. This book won't guarantee a 15, but it may help raise your score a couple points. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Resource
I'm starting my senior year of undergrad and I've been making huge efforts to try to find a grad school program with a professor with similar research interests. Thus far, it's been very labor-intensive.However, I just bought this guide and it's incredibly helpful. Not only does it go through the process of how to apply, have a successful interview, etc, but it also breaks down schools by program.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource but same as previous edition
Yep, I wasted $15 on this. If you haven't got a previous edition, then this is an OUTSTANDING resource for those interested in pursuing clinical psyc in grad school. If you do have a previous edition, do not buy - especially if you have the 2004-2005 edition. There is nothing substantially different as far as I can tell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I got into my first choice program with this
In the fall of 2003, I applied to 7 top PhD programs in my field (in the sciences), including the 5 best.Although I had graduated from the top Ivy League university, I had worked for 5 years and wasn't sure how I'd present myself to the graduate programs.I had reasonably good GRE scores, but all of my recommendations were from industry, so I needed to massage my personal statement to reflect strong industrial experience.
4-0 out of 5 stars To someone who wants to apply graduate school
Summarize the important information from graduate school! To student who wants to apply graduate school, especially for non english speaking students. Author has good sense of humor. He also gives us key points in applying schools and how the schools cope with different students' application.

I found this publication extremely helpful. It was recommended to me by a PhD candidate who had to write multiple essays for admissions applications. There are all kinds of examples of essays and what admissions committees liked and did not like. I found it essential in thinking about and starting my personal statement. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars science questions too easy
took my DAT this past week and this did not improve my score. The General Science questions in the tests were much easier than the actual DAT. Perhaps the questions were old.Reading Comp was good

4-0 out of 5 stars All these reviews are pretty accurate!
I read other reviews and decided to purchase this item. I must say that all of the reviews were pretty accurate. It was a wonderful tool, it had some problems (ex: wrong answer to a couple of questions), but was pretty true to the actual form of the DAT. Word up.

4-0 out of 5 stars TopScore DAT software
If you're going to prepare for the DAT, purchasing this software is still a good idea. However, please be aware of certain weaknesses of this software, as there are some: 1) After taking the real DAT, I realized the science sections of this software were more difficult, partly due to the highly specific nature of the questions. 2) I noted that there were an annoying number of incorrect answers on the PAT sections of this test. A portion of the sample questions were clearly variations of those on the official test. Yet, some of these figures were misdrawn, (esp on the top-front-end sections) such that diagrams contradicted each other. Therefore, we're forced to guess between two wrong answers, trying to predict which was the intended correct answer. ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
This book is absolutely HORRIBLE. Everything was just WAY too easy. The biology and chemistry portions consist of one-liners that barely scratch the surface of a topic. The spatial aptitude review problems are way too easy to even compare to anything you would see on the actual DAT. Plus, there aren't alot of them to practice on. I have never felt more "scammed" in the purchase of a book. I can't believe that such a well respected company like Kaplan would dare publish a test aid that was so watered-down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Subject (... and I read a lot)
I read a lot of books about MBA admissions.Your MBA Game Plan was the shortest, simplest ... and by far, the best!
2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic, Montauk is much better
This book is simply too short and generic to be of use. As an applicant, I can confidently say that the Montauk book ("How to get into the top MBA Programs") is much more comprehensive and overall better. If you want more specific info on the top programs (i.e. so you can tailor your essays or prepare for interviews), complement Montauk with "ABC of Getting the MBA Admissions Edge". Although at first blush "Your MBA Game Plan" aims to cover both the fundamentals, like Montauk, and the specifics like "ABC", it falls short on both counts. The only good thing about this book (compared to the other two) is that it is small and light, so easy to carry anywhere :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Clear and Concise Guide on How to Write a Successful Statement for your Application Package

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST for all students applying to graduate school.
This book was EXCELLENT. I had read two other books before this one, and was disappointed. Though they claimed to be good for grad apps, they were clearly geared toward undergraduate application essays. This book asks thought-provoking questions that help to bring to light relevant experiences and skills that you may have left out. It is great as far as taking you through the process of brainstorming, writing, and revising, but also explains how to write a good essay even if the deadline is looming. It was very good at helping me to organize my thoughts and feel like a good essay was just around the corner - which did wonders for calming my anxiety about the process. The examples in the book were also very helpful, and this is the first book I have seen that had sections dedicated to specific programs (medical, law, business, etc.) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal Statement 101
In "How to Write a Winning Personal Statement for Graduate and Professional School", Mr.Stelzer concisely elucidates how one must bring out an original yet refreshing personal statement. 90% of the sample essays are geared towards the Big 3- Law, Medical, and Business. For students interested in other programs like myself, there are several takeaways one could get from this book. I would strongly suggest using the questionnaires in the Appendix. I learned several things from the pages on advice from admissions representatives. I would also suggest reading all the sample essays first and then the introductory chapter which would help one lay out the groundwork for an original personal statement. Real Essays for College and Grad School by Anne McKinney is another helpful book. Good Luck! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some useful information, but otherwise frustrating
I'm a current master's applicant, and I purchased this book due to recommendations and some of the reviews I've read on this site, and I must say, it's somewhat disappointing. Ostensibly, it's a "one size fits all" masters/PhD book, but (as others have mentioned) it's a little biased towards PhDs, and seems rather Ivy League-oriented. Oftentimes, Peters focuses on the ideal response (mitigating factors be damned) to the cold realities of academia, and it just leaves me with more questions than answers.
4-0 out of 5 stars A star to every wand'ring bark
I found the transition from college to graduate school to be more difficult than the transition from high school to college.Though I excelled at the carefully ordered world of my undergraduate days, I felt rudderless and alone in the much less structured world of grad school. This book was invaluable: tips on navigating the swamp of classes, research, and "real life", surviving grad student penury, and, most of all, a constant exhortation to keep one's eyes on the prize.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
I had an attitude problem about finishing my Ph.D.This book sooooo helped me.I wish I had read it before even starting my Master's degree.I would have done MANY things differently.A MUST read for anyone considering grad school.I'm now an academic advisor for undergrads, and I highly recommend this book.In addition, I recommended it to the dean of graduate studies in my college.A great resource for all areas of study.Even though the author got his degree in the "hard" sciences, and I in the social sciences, this book is very relevant! ... Dr. Fleenor's book provides a clear, concise, plan for medical school interview success! 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, current info on this hidden topic
I've been searching for resources in the area of the medical school interview and it is a barren topic. There's nothing current and nothing that's exclusively dedicated to the interview.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me...
A wonderful step-by-step guide for any potential, doctoral candidate. What I found most helpful was the review of "interview questions that you will most likely be asked"/"questions you should ask."In my doctoral interviews, I WAS asked approximately 3/4 of the questions that were indicated in this section. And as the book states, going into an interview without questions of your own is the kiss of death!More important are the details/process that most of us give little attention to (e.g. how to reject an offer of acceptance graciously, timelines, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful and covers everything!
This book is a really great addition to any students collection of resources for getting into graduate school (even if it is the only one you buy).True, much of the information can be obtained from other sources (such as websites), but it is ALL there, well organized in one little book!I would recommend using multiple sources in your search for the best way to get into whatever program you are applying for, but this book should probably be included.Has great explanations of all types of issues you might confront when looking at applying tograduate school.Great advice and timelines for the undergraduate years, whether you are a freshman or a senior starting to think about graduate school (but start early if you can).
4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource
This book is indisputably a great resource. However, I felt that too much basic, basic information was included. A good deal of the book is information that an undergrad student in PSYC should already know...especially if he/she is truly to be prepared for grad-level work. Weeding out those things, there were some great insights and data. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You will love it too
This is the guide that everyone recommended to me, and I'm so grateful they did. From the opening chapter, I immediately liked and trusted the author--she's an award winning fiction writer and poet who has taught at Breadloaf and many universities and who also has an insider's perspective on the publishing industry. But more impressive than her credentials is the guidebook itself. In a very clear, easy-to-read style she presents an honest, realistic and objective perspective on the world of graduate Creative Writing Programs. She doesn't push you in any one direction and she doesn't even try to convince you that an MFA is the best path to take. I felt one hundred percentbetter about my decision to go back to school after reading this book and considerably less nervous about the daunting task of putting together an application. I wish there was a way I could give this book even more than five stars. I loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book!
I borrowed this book from my friend at the beginning of the summer and haven't given it back yet.Everything is well researched and accurate and the tone is friendly, but candid. She doesn't beat around the bush. She tells you excatly why certain programs have the best reputations, but points out the advantages of going to some of the other "less prestigious" or less "high profile" programs too. She's all about helping you find the program that fits you best.I STRONGLY recommend this book to anyone who's applying to graduate school in creative writing next year. You won't regret buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL
This is the best purchase I made all summer. Two people from my writers group recommended it to me and I have been recommending it to everyone I know who is either in an M.F.A. Program or applying next year. The title makes it seem like it's only for people who are thinking about applying to graduate school, but it's equally valuable for people who are there now or even people who have graduated. I will probably use this guide as a resource for the next ten years of my life. The information on writing colonies and residencies alone is worth the money. Whether you're a poet, fiction writer, or non-fiction writer, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. An essential guide. ... Read more
