5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent Book
Excellent as a textbook.I use it to teach a university-level management consulting class. Many of the relevant topics covered provide a very good basis for in-class discussion. It is well written and insightful, presenting an accurate portrayal of what it is to be a management consultant.I especially like the sections scripted by industry veterans.I recommend this book to anyone interested in or considering a career in management consulting.

3-0 out of 5 stars useful
This is a useful guide, though can be a bit simplistic at times.Still, it is worth reading, particularly if you are very new to the industry. Also recommended for consulting careers are the Vault Guide to the Case Interview and the Vault Guide to the Top 50 Consulting Firms.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Consulting Guidebook Out There!
I love this book.It is full of useful information that is highly relevant to the needs of someone looking to enter consulting and preparing for case interviews. Why would anyone buy Vault or Wetfeet, when they require you to buy multiple books to get the same information that this ONE book has? Also, the people who gave this book bad reviews obviously can't read. The guy from Scandinavia implies that these authors invented case interviews and are selling them as a good way to pick consultants - Wrong!Case interviews have been around forever, and these authors are trying to teach you how to deal with them (they didn't invent them!).The guy from Carlsbad, CA also mis-read this book by saying that these authors invented case questions.IGNORE their bad reviews - they obviously don't read properly.Buy this book for it's meaty content and easy-to-read style. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read For Parents
This is a good book for parents not just those with toddlers and preschoolers. It gives insight into the montessori method and really shows you the interelationship between how a child deveopls intellectually and physically. I wish that I had gotten it earlier because it has good insights into toddlerhood - tantrums and all. My son is 21/2 and we are hoping to send him to pre-school in September, so we wanted to get a guideline so to speak about what we should be looking for and the best kind of learning at his age. Also we were looking for new ways to engage him, so I'm anxious to try out the activities. He's in the 'I want to be independent stage' and after reading the book I have adopted some of its advice on how to help him acheive this. All in all I would say its a good buy, quite informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Montessori resource for the home
I was looking for a good way to teach my preschool son at home using some elements of the Montessori method. However, I wanted to go at my own pace and in a relaxed way.If you need a more regimented and structured Montessori method at home read Elizabeth Hainstock's books.Leslie Britton's book is well-written, concise and hits all the main points.I really like the games and activities designed for children from two to six.I am able to pick and choose and with home materials to teach my son at home.My son is two so he's only able to participate in a few exercises. Can't recommend it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for parents of pre-school age kids
Montessori school can be unbelieveably expensive (approx. 500 dollars per 8 week sessions, and that's just half days!), and your child has to be "approved" in most institutions. Based on the teaching of Maria Montessori, it is designed to help toddlers and young children learn in five simple steps: observation, participation, practice, "eureka" movement, and performance. This learning process can help youngsters be well ahead of the game by the time they go into Kindergarten. While a Montessori school can help give your kids interaction withkids of all ages, you can still apply this method of learning in the home, as Montessori pointed out: "Parents are still the child's first and most important teachers".Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
I've read a lot of homeschooling books in planning for my children's education. This book is a parent's dream! It truly helps you plan from the bottom up, apply thought to aspects of homeschooling that are not considered by other books. It would be the first book I recommend to anyone if they are thinking about homeschooling, just starting homeschooling, or even have been homeschooling for a while and need a good curriculumteaching resource.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE book I have been looking for as a beginner!
I've read a lot of homeschooling books in planning for my children's education and I learned something from each one, whether I liked the book or not! This book, however, is a planner's dream! It truly has you plan from the bottom up, applying thought to aspects of homeschooling that I had not previously considered.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cathy Duffy's popular homeschool picks
This is well organized, clearly written. Her criteria is clearly stated & she writes unpretensiously. I thought it was a great referance book. Especially since she gave great reviews for the KONOS curriculum. Actually, everything that I own she reviewed with great reviews. I think you would buy this book to have a guide on hand before you make future purchases. :) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor!!
I wouldn't waste your money. I am only on chapter 2 and the mistakes in here are stacking up. Spelling mistakes, incorrect information and questions that say to pick an answer from a to g with the correct answer being h make it far from the ideal book to build your confidence or knowledge.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I've just bought the book from amazon, and first of all what I can say about it is that it's very cheap comparing if I bought it here in portugal. the price here is around 83 dollars, so I could almost buy 3 books with that money. really, buying from abroad is much more pleasant than buying in portugal... As for the book... well, better wait for it! :D

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so bad
I got this book with a little over 1.5 years of exchange experience and I know quite a bit but thought i could learn alot more and certify in it.Well this book did help me the 2nd time through reading it.The biggest help really was the practice exams.I took the study exams and learned more that way then with reading.I would recommend this book only to those that actually understand Windows 2003, 2000 and NT both directory structure and network structure. There is alot of networking involved such as firewalls and opening ports.Overall it is a good book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Life saver
This book helped me cope with the issues blocking my progress on my dissertation. I finally felt like I wasn't alone! I developed some good strategies to overcome what everyone who has to work and live and love and write a dissertation all at the same time faces.

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh--- not so much
I am a doctoral candidate and basically this book is not telling me how to write my dissertation and complete it giving 15 minutes a day to the writing (let alone the research) but really how to overcome blocks and start writing. Haven't we all been there, done that already? To me, this book didn't offer anything I hadn't already read, figured out or been taught. Perhaps it would be a good book for procrastinators, but not for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars It got me thinking...
I really appreciate this book.I have a few other books on writing my dissertation and had started the process.Unfortunately, I had also bogged down. The book helped me get going again. The author offers simple ideas, but I actually tried them out and started writing. That is the secret to writing, just write.Simple but dramatic. And I started, as suggested, writing questions and comments to myself on the process of the dissertation. The more I put things down, the more clear they became to me.Amazing.I have really enjoyed this book.Great ideas and the motivation I needed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book
I very strongly advise you buying this book if you wish to do well on the AP Exam. My teacher was completly useless (he never taught, we never took tests, and we never wrote any practice essays or took any practice AP exams). Nevertheless, I purchased this book and read through it and did the practice exams the weekend before the AP exam. I scored a 5 on this exam and have no doubt that I could not have acheived this without this book. I even belive it would be very possible to get a 5 on the AP exam without taking the class ifyou read this book (I didn't read one single chapter in the actual AP textbook). I don't, however know whether this book would help you do well in the actual class since our teacher didn't make us do anything or attempt to teach us anything, he just gave everyone a 99 in the class.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Subject (... and I read a lot)
I read a lot of books about MBA admissions.Your MBA Game Plan was the shortest, simplest ... and by far, the best!
2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic, Montauk is much better
This book is simply too short and generic to be of use. As an applicant, I can confidently say that the Montauk book ("How to get into the top MBA Programs") is much more comprehensive and overall better. If you want more specific info on the top programs (i.e. so you can tailor your essays or prepare for interviews), complement Montauk with "ABC of Getting the MBA Admissions Edge". Although at first blush "Your MBA Game Plan" aims to cover both the fundamentals, like Montauk, and the specifics like "ABC", it falls short on both counts. The only good thing about this book (compared to the other two) is that it is small and light, so easy to carry anywhere :)

3-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book to learn physics, not for the SAT II
This book is an excellent source to learn about almost every aspect of physics. It touches base on things that are not taught in the high school curriculum. I took a year of regents physics and am taking IB physics this year and the book helped a lot. However, the practice problems and in depth information in this book is NOT ON THE PHYSICS SAT II.I took the test a few months ago and the test is nothing compared to the book.Yes it will overprepare you for the test, but if you don't have time to read and study all of those pages, theres no reason to.I'm sure there are other books out that will teach you all you need to know.Again, excellent book, but for the person who just wants to ace the test and nothing more, its a waste of time and energy trying to understand it all.It is not an easy read for an average student. I got a 780 on the test and most of the questions are all on concepts, maybe about 8 percent of the test had actual math problems where you had to work stuff out, and you really don't need to know that many formulas. All in all its a great book to impress your physics teacher and grasp many concepts but not the best for the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars While not flawless, an excellent book to use
I started reviewing with this book for the SAT Physics Subject Test only three days before I had to take it. While I had taken one year of regular physics in school, we never had to memorize the equations for our tests. This book did an excellent job of condensing all the information needed, and its explanations were clear and concise. The review problems were challenging but ensured a thorough understanding of the concepts, and the provided solutions to the practice tests were easy to understand.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good review
This book presents an excellent review, the only issue is that it shoudl have had more practice tests. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outmoded!
While this book is a good start for learning analogies and reviewing math, it's a horrid way to prepare for the actual experience of taking the exam. The distribution of sections--in number, length, and appearance of a research section--has changed since the publication of this text, and it doesn't prepare you for the fact you'll be doing everything on a computer on the Big Day.
4-0 out of 5 stars adequate exercises
the are abundance of mock exam papers which is very much similar the real one!!!

Editorial Review

It's been said that before physics students can fly with Feynman they need to walk with Halliday and Resnick. Those of us who are still toddling along, however, need Larry Gonick.Gonick's characteristically quirky drawings are teamed with physicist Art Huffman's prose to produce lessons like this: picture Sir Isaac Newton driving a Mack truck labeled "Big Inertia." Ike is talking into a CB radio, saying: "Breaker one nine: force overcomes inertia and produces acceleration. Do you read?" As the jacket copy says, "If you think a negative charge is something that shows up on your credit-card bill--if you imagine that Ohm's law dictates how long to meditate--if you believe that Newtonian mechanics will fix your car," here's the book for you. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction Or Refresher
"The Cartoon Guide to Physics", first published in 1990, is one of a series of Cartoon Guides which Larry Gonick has co-authored with scientists in the field of choice; in this case it is with Art Huffman who is in the physics department at UCLA.Outside of Larry Gonick's excellent "Cartoon History of the Universe" series, this is the best of his books that I have read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner
If you are simply interested in better understanding the basic concepts of physics, this is the book for you.I have found that if you're just looking to supplement a little knowledge w/o being a physics buff most people can read and understand the info here and the format is less intimidating.
4-0 out of 5 stars Didactic and entertaining!!
This is essentially a comic book, yet it is able to communicate the fundamental laws of physics taught in an introductory high school physics course and some taught in college such as relativity.Overall, the book is enjoyable and humorous. However, the constraints of actually teaching the material through the drawings do impose on the humor sometimes. The book is accurate, as far as I can tell, and allows one to gain some understanding on how things work, from how the tides come about, to the motion of a gyroscope, to the Theory of Relativity. One disclaimer that I must add, that should be obvious, is that unless you are sufficient in mathematics (genius) you will not know all the consequences that come out from these laws other than the ones provided to you.I would have to recommend this for people over 12 years old, those who want to learn a little physics in a fun and entertaining way. ... If you want a review of subjects you know pretty well, Beating the CSET may be a good choice. If, however, you're rusty or actually need to learn some material for the first time, don't buy this book. Why?Of all the books I have read the last 20 years (over 1,000...I read at least a book a week), this book has the most MISTAKES!

I think this is the best CSEST book out there.I read this book from cover to cover in the 2 weeks before the test, then took the CSET and passed all 3 tests on my first try!I really didn't have to use any other resouces. At times this book got a bit wordy and could have used a few more visuals, but other than that it worked for me!!!

I just took the CSET today, so I don't know how well I did. However, I can review this book for what it is.It's well organized, clear, and I found it helpful when I took the CSET.There were two questions on the CSET that I didn't read ANYTHING about in this book. However, there is too much information to cover in just one book anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Help with Assessment
This book is an excellent resource for someone trying to understand how good assessment works. It is very easy to understand, provides lots of examples and doesn't try to confuse the reader by using excessive education jargon.A very good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
If your college is just beginning institutional assessment, then this is the book for you. It has several talking points that will allow faculty and the administration to join together in the task. Overall, I enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical, highly usable
This is a great introduction to the assessment process with chapters specifically for departments and general education. The appendices include sample forms and processes for all types of assessment. A great practical resource for anyone responsible for creating an institutional or departmental assessment program. I know at my institution, faculty and administrators have been looking for something like this that can give them a concrete process for doing assessment. If you have only one book on assessment, this should be it.Other books fill in more about the theory and why, but the theory and why are nothing without implementation. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...the others are right, probably not worth the cost
The test in this book is pretty simple compared with the real thing...this is simply echoing the other reviewers, I know, but the book wasn't published before I purchased it or I may not have purchased it either. One suggestion, though:in studying for this test, review everything the test provider tells you to study, but do it in far more depth than any practice test they give you.It will be worth the time, effort, and especially the money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
If you are preparing for the mathematics content knowledge assessment test, I would not recommend purchasing this book.It does not really give you any more information concerning study topics than the free literature on the website. The actual test seemed a lot more difficult than the book's practice test, which could give you a false sense of confidence and cause insufficient time management. Also, the study tips aren't anything you've never seen before. Finally, if you do purchase this book, at least you can sell it and get some of your money back!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
The problems presented in this study guide are not as difficult as the ones you'll do on the math content knowledge test. For a practice test I'd just use the free one provided by the ets website rather than waste money on this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Passed with Excellence, but this book offered minimal help.
I bought this book thinking that it would help me study the material on the PLT, but it is only summary of the topics the test covers. It is meant to be used as a guide to show a test-taker what to study from textbooks and other sources.
5-0 out of 5 stars PASSED TEST!!!
This book has an outline of the informantion that you will need on the test. This way you are not studying topics that are not on the test and wasting valuable study time. It also shows the format of the test, sample questions, answers, and grading. All of the information that is on the test is not in this book, but was easily found on the internet. It is a great guide to know what to study for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful...if you follow the directions
This book is very useful, but keep this in mind:it does not actually contain many useful facts. It is an outline of what to study and several useful tips on how to study it.Besides this book you will need a source of information on teaching theory.Your college textbooks work nicely, as does a well-stocked library.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one is the Best review!!
As a teacher of AP Stats for 7 years, I have found this book to be the best and I encourage my students to purchase it. I love the questions at the end of each section and the fact that answers are explained in detail for not only the free response, but multiple choice. The practice exams at the end are also wonderful and it tells how to get a score for your efforts. This book has become my "stat bible" for my reviews leading up to that first week in May! Thanks to Barron's!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
Hey, this is an awesome book, hope i do well on the test!

5-0 out of 5 stars Who needs a professor?
As a busy professional going back to school to earn that overpriced piece of paper we call a B.S., I had no time to BS with the "generals" we all learned (if we were paying attention) in Jr. High.

1-0 out of 5 stars Missing data on test scores and campus crime
The book's jacket announces somewhat presumptuously: "students on campus tell you what you really want to know."
5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for first-timers
This book provides a good basic set of data and student comments on most of the colleges we're considering.A good companion is "Students' Guide to Colleges," which covers only the top 100 colleges, but is brutally honest. This Insider's Guide tends to present a pretty positive view of each college, although it provides a little more insight than just looking at the college's own website or viewbook. The Insider's Guide has colleges grouped by state.I think Insider's Guide gives us useful information about each college: the physical campus, the dorms and food, the use of drugs and alcohol, the types of activities students typically enjoy (sports, arts, whatever).

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy the 2006
I think it's disgusting the lack of research Yale Daily News put into this 2007 guide. There are a hundred things wrong with this guide, but just from opening to the school I go to (University of Delaware), and seeing that one of the things I have to do before I graduate is "go to the Stone Balloon," I could tell this book was just a new cover to the 2006 with updated admissions statistics. The Stone Balloon, a historic University of Delaware Bar and Music Hall, announced more than a year ago that it was going to be knocked down and replaced by condiminiums on Main Street. This was true, and it was closed for the spring, and camera crews were there at the beginning of the summer to see huge bulldozers knock it over.Pretty sad that NO ONE will be able to fulfill the Insider's Guide's instructions.Sweet life Yale...do some research and stop making money reprinting the same "best-selling" book each year ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Grant Wiggins, Warmed-Over
I got this book after reading the reviews posted here, and found it rather disappointing. First, the authors have taken from Grant Wiggins the idea that 'authentic assessment' should include assignments that test 'real-world' skills and interpreted it *very* literally; as a result you will find many examples here from soil science, forestry and engineering, but almost nothing at all from the humanities (I teach history and found no applicable examples). Combined with this is an implicit argument that the point of education is preprofessional training; the authors embrace the idea that the student is a consumer purchasing a skill set from teacher-salesmen. On top of that, it's very clumsily written. I found this a narrow and discouraging view of student-centered learning, which at its best not only applies well to the humanities, but offers a wider perspective on the 'preprofessional' as well: missing here are the ideas of generating essential questions, any discussion of how to incorporate those into syllabus design, or a coherent bigger picture in which engaging assignments that duplicate 'real-world' work are fitted into a learning trajectory. There is, however, a fair amount of discussion of the practice of assessment techniques such as the portfolio etc., but this can also be found in books that apply to a wider range of educational topics. Readers, esp. those from the humanities, interested in learner-centered assessment *and teaching* would be better served by going straight to Wiggins instead of reading the excerpted and narrower version of his arguments presented here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This book provides extensive information about using online environments in the classroom. It details implementations that worked, and implementations that didn't work to show how to implement online enviornments to best benefit students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Different and Powerful Approach to Assessment
Huba and Freed bridge the gap between assessment and student-centered teaching and learning. Throughout the text the authors include reflection questions to trigger thinking and changes in mental models. While the thrust of the book is conceptual, there are many practical suggestions for implementation in areas such as learning outcomes, rubrics, and other related areas of assessment. While compatible with other treatments of assessment, this is a unique perspective. ... Read more
