This dictionary and thesaurus is very basic, not realy that helpfull for college.I do like having the thesaurus available right there though.

What makes this particular resource so valuable is that each page of the book has the dictionary section on top and the thesaurus section on the bottom. So, if you're looking up the definition of a word you don't have to hunt around in another section of the book for a similar word - it's on the same page. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This book really makes you UNDERSTAND the new words you're learning. It's not just about memorization, thank god!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vocabulary Book Ever
Though there are many books for enhancing vocabulary, this book by Norman Lewis is THE BEST.I used this book in high school over 20 years ago and recently purchased it to help tutor my 8th grade daughter. In flipping through the pages, I discovered that I actually remember nearly all of these words due to the ingenious, but simple format used by Norman Lewis. This elegant format is grouping words that have similar meanings together. For example, there are chapters on medical professionals, personality types, types of prevarication, insults, and words of praise. By learning words in semantically related groups, they store together in your memory.Studying words with similar meanings together also fosters an appreciation of the nuances of difference. It's a fantastic way to learn vocabulary that you'll retain. You can skip the earlier book, 30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary by Wilfred Funk & Norman Lewis. The earlier book has a similar format, but fewer words, shorter definitions, and a less engaging layout.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Experience
I'm skeptical of books like this. My view on expanding vocabulary is to simply read a lot and if you see a word you don't understand, then look it up. Magically, you now know what that word means. But this book surprised me, though I didn't initially realize it until much, much later, well after finishing the book and all the numerous exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful tool of reference but...
I think the title should be changed to 'Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms'. The word thesaurus used here is unsuitable given that the Theseus of Greek myths was neither a great writer, philologist, lexographer or anything else related to dictionaries. This name is not used for such dictionaries in other western european languages. so why use it in English?

5-0 out of 5 stars you said "thesaurus" haha!
dude i am totally feeling this thegasaurus. not to get all neolithic on you guys or anything, but this thegasaurus really rocks, extinct or not extinct! really though, if this thegasaurus was water, man would I drink it! if it was a chick, i'd be all like, "hey, how's it going?" if it was a show that ran in real time starring keiffer sutherland, i would so tape it and watch it when i got home. that's what thegasauruses are all about man. taping. and taping means saving. please save the thegasauruses!!!! let's not let them die out again!! honestly, if the cavemen from the past were more like the geico cavemen in those commercials, they would have totally rocked and spearheaded a campaign to save the thegasauruses! come on people!!! 1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended
When I got back into writing this year, I figured I needed a thesaurus more current than the old Random House College Edition Thesaurus, circa 1984, that was in my desk. And using [...] just didn't provide enough context to the words. This Webster Thesaurus was a cheap purchase which I figured would be easy to use - heck, a thesaurus is a thesaurus, right?I was wrong.
3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Small Print
Even people with good eye sight will struggle with this...had I known that I would have got the large print version. As for the thesaurus itself.. it is pretty good. There are a few little code symbols you have to rememberand you may have to bounce around the book a bit to get that"perfect" word. It is full of words though and probably a goodbuy for kids grades 8-12. If it would have had just a little bit largerprint I would have rated it 4 stars but being able to read it is animportant thing...especially if you have to work on something a littlelater in the evening when your eyes are slightly strained all ready. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Looking to be in the top percent in college and high school courses?
A match made in heaven?
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Introduction to a Thesaurus
I used this book with groups of English as a Second Language students in fifth and sixth grades. I thought it was a marvelous introduction to what a thesaurus is and how to use one. The book is only 86 pages long and uses easily readable print font, so it is not intimidating at all and really helps to promote confidence. My students loved it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not assist in the task
I am a fifth grade teacher looking for a thesaurus for my students. I was extremely dissapointed in...this book. There were many words that were ommitted from the book which made it impossible for my students to find the synonyms to the words they were looking for. I thought this book would have provided some assistance in helping my students improve their vocabulary and writing skills, however I was mistaken. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Middle of The Road
Over the last several years I have purchased many rhyming dictionaries looking for the one I like the most. This is one of the first books I tried. This particular book is somewhat generic in nature and is plain. It seems that some words are left out. This book would be good for a required book in a college class. It gives you basics plus it is affordable. But if you want something comprehensive, plus full of information on rhyming, there are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to use and gets you thinking
I write sonnets, villanelles and song lyrics and, before I bought this book, I thought somehow that it was cheating to use rhymes that didn't come out of my own head. Well, phooey to that! Yes, I still do make a list of rhyming words first, but then I turn to this dictionary and - wow - the possiblities just open up!

Regardless of what you're writing, you will write it better with the aid of this Thesaurus. If you are a non-native speaker of English like me, and you want to expand your vocabulary, buy this book... or alternatively some other Roget's Thesaurus. One of the best things in this book is the fact that you will find what you're looking for very fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars The original and still the best
Roget was born in England of French parentage and made the development of an English Language Thesaurus his life's work. He gained little recognition in his own lifetime but the results of his endeavours have been diligently embellished and supplemented by generations of academics so that now, when we need another word for the one in our mind, when we are seeking a word but it won't come to mind, when we want to put together that "catch phrase" that will bring our customers running to our door, we reach instinctively for Roget's Thesaurus. They're even a standard part of the kit for most Word Processing programs.Read more

(Little wonder that Wolfe writes 700-page books.)Suffice it to say, such over-the-top wordiness submitted to a publisher by an unpublished writer would probably be tossed in the waste basket, quickly, or consigned back to the slush pile.#####Essentialism venerates humility as its highest virtue.Consequently, when in doubt, it is probably best to adapt the James M. Cain breakout writing fashion dating way back to the 1930s with his The Postman Always Rings Tiwice, Double Indemnity, and Mildred Pierce.Brevity.Simplicity. Faithfully follow Commandment V of the Plot Development Ten Commandments:Thou Shalt Not Hyperbolize. ##### In this regard, The Dictionary of Concise Writing is a precious gem.It is a volume which should be on every book shelf, conveniently accessable as a constant reference by every writer.

This is an excellent book, and other comments here are more profound than my own thoughts, so I'll just say that I use this (and it's somewhat companion, The Dimwit's Dictionary) with regularity. Whenever I've written something that I think may be verbose, I hastily consult this to see if I've erred. It's truly an indispensable tool.

In "The Dictionary of Concise Writing", Robert Hartwell Fiske battles the veritable plague of excessive wordiness that threatens to make muddled mush of the English language. Well, maybe that's hyperbole. And maybe it's too wordy. In any case, in this book's first two chapters, "The Perfectibility of Words" and "The Imperfectibility of People", Fiske explains how, and hypothesizes as to why, we cloud our speech and writing with so many unnecessary words. The first chapter gives common examples of objectionably wordy sentences organized by part of speech and type of phrase. The second chapter discusses wordiness in business, legalese, journalese, academicspeak and its repercussions. Those chapters are followed by"The Dictionary of Concise Writing", whose 357 pages constitute the bulk of this book. The Dictionary lists common wordy phrases, alphabetically, and suggests more concise alternatives for each one. Every wordy phrase is illustrated with an example sentence and an improved version, in which the phrase has been replaced by something better. Fiske isn't claiming that these wordy phrases should never be used -although I gather that he might say that of some, but that we should express these ideas succinctly whenever it will do the job. Truthfully, writers probably don't notice when they use too many words, so we may not think to look for an alternative in this book. I find "The Dictionary of Concise Writing" most valuable as a reminder. Fiske's examples stick with me and make me more conscious of wordiness while I'm writing, especially of common redundant and overwrought phrases. There is a short interview with the author at the end of the book. Robert Hartwell Fiske is the editor of The Vocabula Review (www.vocabula.com), where you will find further interesting opinions and observations on the English language. ... Read more
