Just what we needed
As a homeschooling mom I was furstrated with the old edition we were trying to use. This one has been perfect though I know we will have to get a more advanced one as the kids get older.

This book is an amazing resource for children.My children literally fight over who gets to use the book next.I highly recommend it for any classroom grades 4-7.

A Perfect Children's Thesaurus
The American Heritage Thesaurus is a must reference book for any home with children. Each researched word, printed in blue large bold print, is accompanied with the a description, printed in black, of the part(s) of speech the word can be used, several best choice synonyms, and a few lesser utilized synonyms. In addition, an example sentence incorporating the researched word is provided. Occassionally a list of antonyms is provided for the researched word. Researched words are easily located as a result of a large space between each word. Each two page spread usually contains one or two color photographs adding some visual appeal. In summary, this thesaurus is highly recommended and is an invaluable resource for any child of reading age.

English and its Foibles
Bill Bryson's dictionary is a wonderful frolic through the foibles of the English language.The misused, the misunderstood and even the mis-spelled are treated with great humour and insight.
Hilarious and useful, but some problems
That about says it all. Bill Bryson is a hilarious writer. I like reading grammar books anyway, but I was always excited to read this book, as it's so entertaining.
An enjoyable reference not just for editors
If you are one of those people who actually care about your writing, then this book is for you. I picked up a copy recently at a bookstore and I've browsed through most of it. I'm embarrassed to say that I found a few words that I had been using incorrectly!

Roget's Thesaurus in Dictionary Form

100 Words Almost Everyone Confuses
An excellent introduction to commonly misused words.Although
Could of passed...
To me, this book was simply a dictionary of 100 words sorted in alphabetical order. What I was hoping for was a book that would describe the common misuses of words and separate out differences between misused words. Instead, it seems each word was just simply stated and then defined. It's a great book to simply read about words and their meanings, but just wasn't what I expected. Not an expensive book, so I'm not complaining too much.

If you need this book, you will not understand it.If you understand it, you don't need it!Unless you were the one student in thousands whose jaw dropped in rapt fascination when your seventh-grade teacher diagrammed the parts of speech, you will not follow the alleged explanations in this book.The explanations come straight out of that seventh-grade grammar text.Such and such a word is the intransitive past participle of another word.There, that cleared it up, didn't it!There is almost never a simple declarative sentence about how to use a confusing word... here is a lovely example from page 88...

Middle of The Road
Over the last several years I have purchased many rhyming dictionaries looking for the one I like the most. This is one of the first books I tried. This particular book is somewhat generic in nature and is plain. It seems that some words are left out. This book would be good for a required book in a college class. It gives you basics plus it is affordable. But if you want something comprehensive, plus full of information on rhyming, there are better books out there.

easy to use and gets you thinking
I write sonnets, villanelles and song lyrics and, before I bought this book, I thought somehow that it was cheating to use rhymes that didn't come out of my own head. Well, phooey to that! Yes, I still do make a list of rhyming words first, but then I turn to this dictionary and - wow - the possiblities just open up!
It's Great!

New Oxford AmericanDictionary
We used these dictionaries as prizes for our school-wide spelling bee and the students loved them--not as much as the gift certificates to the mall, but, hey, it's jr. high.

Most useful dictionary
I use dictionaries daily and I find myself using the New Oxford American as my first go-to dictionary because its definitions are accurate and very well described.It makes clearing up the meanings of words a breeze.Also, when a word has many meanings, those which fall into specific categories are grouped together, making this an irrestible book.Since I've found it to be the most useful dictionary, I give this dictionary 5 stars.

Great dictionary, Very good pda version as well
I chanced upon this dictionary at a book store. After giving it a quick lookover, it seemed to be pretty good. Like any good dictionary, it explains the meaning in great detail and provides sentences indicating meaning in context.

A Visual Learning Experience
I've been a fan of the DK Oxford Illustrated American Dictionary for a few years now. The DK Ultimate Visual Dictionary is the next step. It is not a dictionary in which the words are organized with pictures in alphabetical order. However, you can look up the words and find the corresponding page numbers, so finding words is relatively easy.

EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK!
I received this book as a gift and do not know how I ever wrote without this tool. I write instruction manuals and was cursed (and influenced) by my English professor to never use a thesaurus because it is not an absolute synonym replacement. HUH? With carrying this baggage around for many years, I am picky about colloquial expression, slang and word-find reference books.This is an EXCELLENT reference book with an outstanding index for looking up the exact word you need. - JoJo Canton

Great buy for anyone who uses words!
I'm a writer and an English tutor, so I use this a lot! I'm trying to get my boss to buy a few for us tutors, since so many of our students are english second language. Great for people like me whose idea of specific is "the thing that does the stuff on the doohicky."

Great for Spellers-Ain't-Us
I've owned Roget's Descriptive Word Finder for almost a year. I've had Flip Dictionary for just a month and it is already more ragged than my Roget from usage. A thesaurus like Roget's is great for nouns and adjectives, but Flip Dictionary covers every noun, verb and preposition that thesauruses typically overlook.

The ONLY indispensible tool I own
No question, this is the best resource on my bookshelves, a status it earned twenty years ago that has never been threatened. I can't imagine being without it. The Synonym Finder is useful, helpful, functional, utilitarian, convenient, worthwhile, rewarding, valuable, beneficial, effective, advantageous, practical, efficacious, serviceable, handy.

Essential for editors/writers
I was given this thesaurus as a gift for high school graduation (longer ago than I care to admit). I went on to get a degree in journalism and become a professional editor. Good for those who only recently arrived to the United States
...and also for those who have at least advanced or intermediate skill in English language.In my case I bought this book hoping to enrich my general conversational vocabulary.I have NOT achieved my personal goal since the book is full of most simple phrases that are very quickly learned from daily communication by anyone who lived in the US for more than 2 months (Thanks!Sorry 'bout that! That is just what I (a ELS student) Want !!!
I watched a lot of American Movies and Sitcoms. There are too much expressions that I cannot really understand ~! They are all composed of simple words,but when they are together, I just cannot get it. Like "Might as well","who do you think you are kidding",and tons of others....This book explains a lot to me. The entries in this book are really used very frequently in American Movies and on TV. I heard almost all of them before.It teaches me much more than my ESL classes !! Wonderful Tool
This Thesaurus Sinonimos Antonimos E ideas afines it is a wonderful tool for writing, translating and word usage.Unlike regular dictionaries you just get the word in spanish or english or vice versa not much help.

In my opinion it is a complete book. It helps me a lot when I am writing texts. I can check the similar words and study at the same time. Very Good!

Brillant Yet Flawed
I just bought this book today and was absolutley delighted to see such an up-to-date reference book on American usage.I have been waiting for a comphrensive yet readable book on this subject, and Mr. Davidson's book fills the bill fairly well.The entries are alphabetically arranged, with very entertaining and informative prescriptions on what's right and incorrect.On the more controversial entries he even suggests a "risk-free" alternative to keep the prospective writer/editor out of possible hot water.A nice touch!Most aspects of usage and style are covered.From the usual collection of confusing and misspelled words, to excellent discussions about fused gerunds, redundant phrases, and other matters likely to trip up people who want to write clearly and correctly for their readers.The excellent bibliography is exhasutive and lists all the books that have been published on this topic since the early 90s (and earlier!).

Although I have given 5 stars, I would like to see the computer version.If you have not had any dictionary regarding synomyms, I would recommend you to have it.

The best book for vocabulary
Throw away your thesaurus!Indeed, toss your worthless plain-penny dictionary, and obtain this work!Purchase it hardbacked and thumb-indexed (my forty year old copy is now falling to shambles).For years I have judged and esteemed _Webster's New Dictionary of Synonyms_ as the very best book on precise, pellucid, and exact usage of words.This book is its worthy successor.A thesaurus only lists words; this work discusses, compares, and contrasts words in exhaustive detail, with shades and nuances of meaning, with example sentences from published writers, with antonyms, and with analogous and contrasted words.No writer can do without it. As a teacher, I have recommended it to all my students.As a student myself, all those years ago, I perused nightly ten pages. It belongs with Fowler's as one of the great works in and on the English language.

This book and Chamber's Etymological English Dictionary are my two favorite but little-known word reference works. The main difference between this book and Roget's Thesaurus is it focuses more precisely on the actual meanings of the words. A thesaurus will give you plenty of words with similar or nearly similar meanings, grouped by general idea or concept. But most of the words are not exactly synonymous. If you need that, this book will come to your rescue. Another nice feature is, as another reviewer here pointed out, it will even give you examples of words with very similar meanings, but with enough description and definition so you can distinguish among otherwise seemingly identical words and synonyms. A great resource for Spanish professionals
This is an excellent resource for those who are using the Spanish language in a professional capacity. I would strongly recommend it to teachers, translators, interpreters and writers. Advanced students in Spanish would also find this dictionary helpful. This dictionary is monolingual-Spanish only and it provides a wide range of synonyms and antonyms of the selected words with examples as necessary to show subtle differences in meaning especially when there is a very fine line between which word is more adequate. A good example of this is the word "narrow". In Spanish you will find "estrecho" and "angosto" however, with very subtle differences not to be used interchangeably. Most dictionaries don't make the distinction. This one does and this concept is very important when using the language at a high level. Another great example is the word "beautiful" in Spanish there are many equivalents such as "hermoso", "bello", "lindo" etc. but all with very specific nuances, which need to be taken into consideration when using the words. Since having purchased this dictionary three years ago, I find it to be a valuable resource. If you are an advanced student or a Spanish professional this dictionary will prove to be beneficial.
