5-0 out of 5 stars The BOOK for Telecommunications
This should be a mandatory book for anyone working in the telecommunications industry. Not only is it comprehensive, but the explanations are direct, easily understood and sometimes humorous. Anyone who uses "oxymoron" in an explanation gets my vote.

5-0 out of 5 stars What if Daniel Webster had an irrepressible sense of humor?
I have been buying regularly updated editions of Newton's Telecom Dictionary for fifteen years now and will continue to do so as long as Harry keeps 'em coming.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best Telecom resource
In 2001 I started a finance job with a fortune 500 company, in a position to become the telecom financial analyst manager.I had never worked in this environment and I was given a six month period to become knowledgeable in telecom.I brought to the job my years of accounting, and contract skills but had no idea where to turn for the telecom information.A telecom sustaining engineer suggested "Newton's Telecom Dictionary".

4-0 out of 5 stars Where We Were In Vietnam
I have had Mike's book for some time now and have found it to be of great use to me.I served in Vietnam as an infantryman in the Australian Army and he has covered many of our battle sites as well as our base areas so for that I say well done..I currently live and work in Vietnam so I can use it as a constant reference whenever I travel throughout the country visiting the old battlefields and other sites of interest. With all grid references given in the military grid system and the ready availability of military maps for most areas it is a most usefull piece of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where We Were in Vietnam
I served 3 consecutive tours in Vietnam and I must tell you, as a vietnam Veteran, I find this Book PerticulerlyAluminating. I still am in the process of comeing to terms with many things dealing with Vietnam. This Book puts many of them into perspective.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding!Resonates with living history!
Michael P. Kelley has exceeded all expectations with this volume. He has put his heart and soul into this resource, one that resonates with the living history of a long series of wars in 20th Century Vietnam. A primary resource for all interested in the conflict in Vietnam. A First Rate effort! Reread all those Vietnam-era works and see if those firebase names jive up to the action described. Is it fact, or else some sorry assed tale passed on down? Now we know. This is a must for any and all public libraries. We simply must have this work in the public record. HATS OFF,Mister Kelley! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
I am writing this review from the viewpoint of someone who already speaks French and wanted to learn how to translate. The sad fact is that skill in the former does not necessarily promise skill in the latter.Stack asks: are you accurately translating ALL of the ideas in the original text into the next language?Does the result sound like natural English as written by a native speaker? His lessons in French grammar as well as translation exercises make this book a definite keeper (and while I already spoke French before I picked up this book, it was recommended to me by an engineer who had minimal French under his belt and merely wanted to be able to understand some written French that kept cropping up on the job).
4-0 out of 5 stars A little dry in content, but I learned how to read French!
I used this book as a textbook for an undergraduate course in Reading French. Not speaking, just reading.Since I already knew Spanish and was familiar with Portuguese, it was not hard for me to understand thelanguage. However, my speaking ability is still non-existent.I justcannot wrap my mouth around French pronunciation.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
I could not expect anything more from a thesauras. This has all the words I, through my preteen years, have needed, without boggling my mind with lots of words that I never try to use.I don't feel overwhelmed, but I DO find the information I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars How can I describe this Thesaurus
This thesaurus is:5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Teacher Prizes This Book!
_The_Clear_and_Simple_Thesaurus_Dictionary is the most practical thesaurus I have found for use with my fourth- and fifth-grade students. Unlike many thesauruses, it is formatted in a style that students (and adults!) willfind familiar and easy to use. While not as comprehensive in scope as thosedesigned for college use, this thesaurus allows students the satisfactionof finding synonyms or associated words for almost any word they mightneed. I had not found this to be true of other "beginning"thesauruses, which was a frustration to both my students and to me. Thisgem was a major find, and is now in regular use in my classroom. I highlyrecommend it to any teacher of intermediate or junior high age students, aswell as to parents who want a truly helpful resource for their school-agechildren. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for what it offers....though it's lacking....
I really love a book I just got, called the "Encyclopedia of Battles: From 1479 B.C. to Present"...that's a great book, not because it gives super large descriptions of battles, but because it HAS every battle and war in history. It also includes wars, and lists battles in order of these wars. I do not mind the lack of information, since I am merely using this book to look things up online in detail at wikipedia.com, so I'll be an expert on war and battles in history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Military History: A Dispassionate View
War is both bloody and chaotic, yet if one wishes to understand it then one must not be so.In THE OXFORD COMPANION TO MILITARY HISTORY, editor Richard Holmes gathers the expertise of dozens of experts in military history to produce a massive text (more than 1,000 pages) on the entire spectrum of military history. When readers think of this topic they tend to think of battles and wars, and this text lists all the important ones and some that are known only to specialists. You want to know a one or two page summary of the battle of Stalingrad in 1942?Battles like this are discussed in detail and with clarity, often with surprisingly detailed illustrations and maps.Yet, this history includes far more than battles fought.Battles are not just set piece encounters of troop movements; they include the human element of both rank and file grunt and their respective commander.Further, battles are often won and lost solely on the basis of the technological superiority of one side over the other.Holmes' text includes all that and more.So for whom is this history intended? It it not for one who has no interest in matters of killing and strategy. It is for one who has a previous interest in a battle, a soldier, or a weapon. It is for one who has seen the film PEARL HARBOR and wishes to separate celluloid fantasy from historical fact.It is for the high school or college student who needs to know more than what is normally contained in a general history. And finally, it is for those who wish to have a handy one volume text of military arcana as the next step on a personal project or quest that involves using what Holmes' experts have to say.TOCMH is a superb gift to anyone who falls into any of the above categories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Companion to Military History
This book is very thorough for the type of history it covers, but it has biases that detract it from receiving the highest rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for a math major
I am majoring in mathematics, and thus needed to search out a good reference book that covers most everything.Well, this is it, and I looked at all of them. The price for the softcover is reasonable, and I would only get the hardcover if it were to be used extensively (library or multiple users). The amazing amount of information is dictated in mathematical shorthand, so the beginner may have some difficulty, but then again, it is a reference (and a might good one too) and not a text.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good way to start a math library
EDM2 is exceptional for the uniformly high quality of the writing. Each major field of mathematics is divided into subfields and treated in essay format. There are no synthesizing overview articles. It does a good job of referencing original results and notable texts as of around 1980.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable. How did I ever get on without it?
If my house were on fire and I had only sufficient time to rescue four books, I would likely grab my four-volume Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mathematics, Second Edition (EDM2).Truly, this is one of the most useful books I own.As testimony to this fact one need only observe that there are more bookmarks protruding from my copy of EDM2 than there are pages (well, almost).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute must-have plant bible
I've been coveting this book at a gardening friend's house for several months and just received my own copy as a gift. It's got everything: Every plant and variety imaginable, color photos, tips and techniques, heat and temperature maps... The latter are specific to the U.S., but international buyers would likely still find the plant and tree information exhaustive and very useful. This is the ultimate reference book, with the added bonus of being glossy and beautiful enough to leave out on the coffee table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick reference, good for college biology
I found this book to be a great reference in conjuction with a good textbook like Campbell's Biology. This dictionary helped me look up difficult concepts that were not always explained that well in my biology college classes. If you want a great resource for knowing the type of questions asked on college biology tests, get
4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
I majored in biology and work in a lab, and I use this book quite frequently. Not all of us remember every single thing from school, and this book is perfect for a quick reminder of terminology and processes. It covers a great deal of common and uncommon topics, and provides great illustrations for some of the central concepts of life science. I recommend this book for anyone working in, studying, or interested in biology. It is much quicker than trying to go through your old notes or textbooks!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for biologists
I'm an upper level biology major at a 4-year university, and I think every term that I looked up was not in this book.Maybe it would be fine for people who know absolutely nothing about biology, but if you're looking for a book to give you something a little extra other than your biology text book, this is not it. ... Editorial Review

This encyclopedia can make anyone feel like a scientist! Not only does it have fascinating facts on everything from atoms to zephyrs, it also shows how scientists work--describing, measuring, and asking questions about the world. Filled with detailed, sharp illustrations and eye-catching photographs, this book could keep a curious kid (or adult!) occupied for weeks. The one- and two-page entries are thematically organized--much more useful than alphabetical entries for making connections and thinking about whole systems. Some of the best categories are "Reactions," "Materials," "Weather," "Space," and "How Living Things Work." But Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DK Science Encyclopedia
This book is great. It gives many pictures and illustrations. It helped me immensely with my science class.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Fragility of Science
DK makes some of the world's best books for kids; that is indisputable. It's easy to nitpick, of course. The precision photography of the DK books, and the very attention to detail can render the technology information obsolete fairly rapidly. But for the here and now, DK books have no rival. However, they may well not last beyond the now. Here's my pet peeve with this particular book: It is so big and heavy, that if your kids love this book as much as mine do, the cover will quickly separate from the book, leaving the whole thing vulnerable to unravelling. We've lost our contents and index already, now we're losing our science history pages! I'm so sad about this! This book literally falls apart under its own weight, when handled by children. I will attempt a hold-together fix with some duct tape, but I'm not sure how long that will last. This book is such an incredible resource, and kids will spend hours reading it to themselves or dragging it over to you for an explanation of this or that, but its construction is not sufficiently strong for its weight and target age level. A tough paperback binding would have been a far better thing. Kids need strong, strong books. If you want to keep this book in spiffy condition, then by all means put it up on a shelf, defeat the purpose of buying it in the first place, and then your kids can sell it on e-bay in 50 years or so as an antique curiosity. If you're some hyper-organized size-5 perfect freak of nature, you can keep it on your special shelf of fragile books that you personally take down and read to your children for 25 minutes every day after Yoga, and then you can do the same for your grandchildren, if your kids ever let you see them. If you let this book just get enjoyed and learned from freely, you can expect that a: Your kids will love it and learn a lot, and b: The book won't last two years, unless you only have girls, who tend to be less destructive little beasts. I don't think girls will attempt to place this book as a bridge between couch and coffee table, then jump on it. Boys might. Punks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Home Should Have This Book
and I truly mean this. For adults, adolesents and kids as young as two years old, this is a great resource and highly enjoyable book for all ages. My 3 year old LOVES it, my 5 year old LOVES it, and when flipping through it with them together as a bedtime book, I almost always wind up reading and adding to my own knowledge-base myself. This is a book that you would expect to retail for $50 and at this Amazon price, it is a real deal. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Entertaning and well written but off base
Now, I agree with about 80% of the things the author is skeptical about.I mean, I don't believe in them too. However, the hair starts to go up on the back of my neck when yet another Western white guy dismisses every cultural belief that is not his.The definitions of many items discussed are not even remotely correct too.It reminds me of when a born again Christian rips apart every single world religion because they know the "truth."What are you supposed to gather from this, that all indigenous people and other cultures are stupid because they aren't backed by a US drug company? Acupuncture is really a dangerous delusion? That gets real old. It's a little 1860 pioneer type thinking to me.I think if I were actually interested in a topic such as Chinese medicine I may rather go to better sources than one Western guy's 2 paragraph dismissive definition.Kudos to the author, it must be nice to know absolutely everything about absolutely everything and be able to discard it all in favor of Western thought in one book. ;)

1-0 out of 5 stars It's funny how completely false he can get.
I can't remember if Doctor Wallach is mentioned in his book or not but the other day I came across this man's site, promoting his book. He had a listing there about Doctor Joel Wallach. Within the first sentence he said that Wallach claims that all diseases are a result of mineral deficiency! Amazing...this is how he calls Wallach a quack? With a complete and total LIE. That's right. See I have Wallach's books. My family takes his supplements. I am part of Wallach's company email: Ekowal459@aol.com to discuss it further if you're inclined, etc. Now, I have also listened to DOCTOR Wallach's seminars in about 20 different variations and have health successes of my own as a result of him. Never once does Dr. Wallach [BS,DVM+ND] or his Wife Dr. Ma Lan [A Microsurgeon MD with a Masters in Science and liscensed Acupuncturist], ever come within the neighborhood of saying that all diseases are caused by mineral deficiency! This is insane and completely untrue. Furthermore he discredits Wallach for calling himself a physician by the implication that a Naturopathic doctor is NOT a physician on the grounds that he is NOT A MEDICAL DOCTOR. Once again a moron who can't understand how someone who's primary means of health care for patients is not pharmaceuticals can be a legitimate Doctor. So by his standards Osteopaths are not Physicians? No one can heal anyone else unless they dispence pharmaceuticals? Oh that's right, Naturopaths can dispense pharmaceuticals in state's which allow it...like the one Wallach trained and worked in...interesting. And Wallach does recommend some pharmaceuticals where prudent...he's not a lunatic. He talks about what an outrage his claims are? Such an outrage... I have one of his seminars on tape where he is speaking to 200 DOCTORS. Why would they even show up? This man tries to discredit Doctor Wallach and that which he says which aren't lies are just foolish arguments that make him look like the con artist or just plain ignorant of his subject [Wallach, Naturopathy, Health...etc. Don't waste your time on this man's books. I won't even talk about the positive points in this book that actually have merit because as far as I'm concerned his ranting about Doc Wallach on his site... and in the book, I seem to recall, discredits everything else period.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a good book for a rainy day, because it is a lot to absorb. But I really like this book. I actually bought it because of all the negative reviews - I wanted to see what all the hooplah was about. It has many interesting theories - and you do not HAVE to believe all of them - but they all deserve consideration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for writers, thinkers, students...
I purchased this book in hardcover a few years ago, and have found myself going back to it again and again. In writing novels, I know no better reference book than this for providing inspiration and insight. The symbols listed often have meanings far beyond what most would think. The sections on colors and numbers alone are worth the cover price.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Dictionary of Synbols
The book as good content, but needs illustrations/photo's to make it come to life to the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sacred way of looking at the outer world
This is one of the most frequently used and most deeply pondered works of my permanent collection. It is, in my humble opinion, the best single volume on the subject of symbols and symbolism written in modern times.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Internet Computer Language Dictionary
A very concise, well-written dictionary of computer terms, language defintions, internet definitions, standards, computer interface devices, connectivity, etc. Terms are easy to find and the definitions are exact and to the point. There are even references to web sites where appropriate to further identify a term. The description of connectors is particularly helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I can't count the number of computer terms and abbreviations I've looked for in this book -- looked for in vain, that is. The one that inspired me to go online and complain publicly was ICC. There is no ICC (International Color Consortium) reference! Unbelievable that this basic abbreviation has been left out of a dictionary of computer and internet terms. Save your money and use online resources for definitions and explanations.

4-0 out of 5 stars YOUR EARLY COMPANION
If you are an average computer (or Internet) user whose requirements include a portable Computer/Internet Dictionary, I will recommend this one. It is handy, concise, and easy-to-use. But, if your computer knowledge is advanced, it will be wise to look for something else. This dictionary will not be of much benefit to you. It has a beginner's outlook; and offers a modest 2,500 definitions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important reference books I own.
Hortus Third isn't perfect. I wish it had more drawings and I wish it included more non-cultivated plants.5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST plant book available!
If you're *seriously* interested in plants (i.e., a plant "nerd")and love learning about the technicalities of plant families, similarities, differences, etc., then this book is for you. It'snot for wimps! It's fascinating to study, and a great read if plants areyour world. ... Read more
