Great for beginners and people looking for illustrations
I didn't realize how much I enjoyed using this dictionary until someone stole mine!!!It has great charts and graphs and is colorful...it has the kings in order and during what time of history...it has pictures...it's simple enough for those who do not want to be weighted down with fancy jargon...so if you are looking for a sophisticated dictionary, this is not it!However, it serves it's purpose.It gives good information, but not a plethora of info...but well worth the money spent!

Since 1970 South Africa ended apartheid; Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected president of Haiti, deposed by military coup then reinstated; San Francisco suffered a major earthquake; and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dissolved. So it's a good thing Merriam-Webster updated its geographical dictionary to include more than 48,000 alphabetically arranged entries of mountains, lakes, towns, and countries. Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary
The dictionary was delivered as promised and in excellent condition.I consider Amazon to be a great site and I will order from them again in the future.

Comparison between 1988 and 2001 Editions
I had been using the 1988 edition without the need to update my library with the Second Edition until last year. Owing to geopolitical changes since 1988, a more recent edition of Webster's New Geographical Dictionary seemed necessary and the Third Edition was the current version available. The Third Edition contains more current background information (e.g. Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), expanded entries (e.g. Palghat), a subtle, easier-to-read font, sidebars, and cleaner maps (e.g. Palestine). That said, if you want more detailed maps or more concise country profiles, you might be better off checking other resource materials such as National Geographic (Magazine maps) and The CIA World Fact Book respectively. Where this boook retains its advantage is that it contains diacritical notation for the proper pronunciation of the place names.

Simply outstanding
This is an excellent reference book that covers a myriad of geographical locations.The maps are also excellent.I highly recommend this book.A previous reviewer claims that the editors made an egregious mistake by including Slovenia as part of the Balkan states.Maybe that person should do a little research because virtually every resource, including Microsoft Encarta, includes Slovenia in the Balkans.And yes, the Ottomans did conquer Slovenia.The Ottomans had to surrender Slovenia, Hungary, and Croatia to the Hapsburgs in 1699.The editors of this book got it right on the money.As for that reviewer -- a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. ... Budge is a GREAT WAY to become FLUENT in this language
Budge is the best way to go if you are serious about becoming fluent in this beautiful language.The fact is that Budge puts the symbol, the transliteration, and the translation all together so you can know exactly what word you are reading and you can learn the syntax by reading his texts.You can pronounce it as you are learning it while reading the symbol all at the same time.The other wonderful thing about Budge is that he has loads of works out there.If you study one book, then you can easily move into other books and get the same reinforcement without having to learn some different author's other pronunciation key.
The best just keeps getting better!
If your reading the Heiroglyphics you will need this book so don't even kid your self if you think you won't because it's worth it's weight in gold.

An Atlas of Whimsy
I got this book when I was bed-ridden with the flu to help me cope with the days and nights of dizzy spells and the blahs. It not only got me through the ordeal but still serves me well when I want to take an imaginary trip to "Neverland", meaning the realms of childhood and adulthood wonderment. The book doesn't include places that might occupy corners of our own dreary work-a-day world, but those "over the rainbow" places created by talented fabulists who take their readers on magical journeys. Not all the places are pleasant.They are not necessarily utopias. Some of the places are those you might have visited in a nightmare. But they are nonetheless places to which you may want to travel...or revisit, if you've read the stories using the places as a setting. In some cases, it may motivate the browser to read the works from which the descriptions are derived. From the quasi-mathematical vistas of Flatland to the dreamscapes of Windsor Mackay's Slumberland, this travelogue will provide the armchair voyager with many hours of pleasure.

Nice idea but lacking many
I like the idea in principle but this book isn't it.They failed to include obvious places as well as little-known.Outrageously missing is Springfield (where The Simpsons live).Obscurely missing is Woldercan, city destroyed in the tableau of Dr. Lao's circus.
A handy tool
To find out what kind of places exist in other people's imaginations turn to this book. There are maps and guides. I enjoyed studying the map of Oz. Who knew? Informative and Invaluable!

Excellent resource
I received it as a gift when I started preaching and find myself bypassing seminary books and using this one for historical facts for sermon preparation.It is written in plain English with maps and photographs that help you get into the time and place of the topic.

Huge, heavy, illustrated, and comprehensive
This is one BIG book.More than 1000 large pages, most of them with a photo or two.And it is comprehensive, with some 3500 entries, covering pretty much everything you would ever want to know about the Bible, from locations to individuals to customs to coins and archaeological excavations, etc.Easily enough info to keep a person busy for days if not weeks. As an added bonus, it is remarkably inexpensive for such a large, illustrated tome.My only complaint is the quality of maps (there are few, but they are not the best quality, and the satellite photos at the end are just plain annoying), the fact that the individual entries do not have the contributer's name attached (there are more than 70 of them - Jewish & Catholic professors, for the most part), and finally, the complete lack of footnotes, bibliography, or index.In spite of thesereservations, I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Bible.
Illustrated Dictionary and Concordance
Wow.If you're looking to understand names and places and theme of the Bible, this book covers it all.I couldn't really find anything that's in the Bible that's not in this book.It can help a serious scholar or the casual interest (like me).If there is more than one entry for a topic, this book covers them all.It is richly illustrated and well written.The only problemn is it weighs so much it's difficult to carry.You'll need to put it on a table because if you bring it to bed to read, you'll knock the wind out of yourself.

Excellent and unequalled
This book is excellent and unequalled.Though written one hundred years ago and re-released in the 1970's and 1980's by Tuttle, it is the best historical reference for Japan up to the 20th century that I've seen.I bought my copy 20 years ago and have lived in Japan for 12 years and still often reference it.

"Heather-Buzzom: A Besom Made Out Of Heather."
This is a surreal little dictionary containing many definitions as strange as the one in my title. Many of the "definitions" refer the researcher to another book (that is normally even more obscure than this one), and many use the word as part of the definition itself. By the way, I had to look "besom" up in a real dictionary, and discovered that a besom is a broom made out of twigs, which means that a heather-besom is a broom made out of heather twigs. (I guess.)

This Is A Great Book and It's A Keeper!
I bought this book and I like it alot but I have to admit that I initially purchased the book The Chiron Dictionary of Greek & Roman Mythology because the TV shows Hercules and Xena with their storylines often being based on the Greek and Roman Myths had me me curious about Greek and Roman Mythology and I think this book was a very good purchase because I have really enjoyed reading it and now I really like the ancient myths and look forward to buying more mythology books and I definitely have to recommend this book to anyone interested in the Greek and Roman myths.
