5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite
I am an EFL teacher and have dictionaries of different publishers. MW9 was my first dictionary of a kind and it started the life-long romance with this beautiful piece of lexicography. The 11th edition is a step forward, the only thing lacking being the list of colleges and universities in US and Canada, which I do miss. Otherwise, the only competition this dictionary can have is the new edition of Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary by OUP, but I still think MW11 is more up-to-date and interesting to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing some stuff
I bought this dictionary for the CD ROM that comes with it.Websters makes by far the best computer dictionary available and when you combine it with the computer thesaurus you have a very powerful writing tool.

So far I am pleased with this dictionary.I had to make the purchase for my 6th & 8th graders, and I believe they are finding it easy to use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars you're wrong
Scrabble is not about words, and someone of your rating should know that.

5-0 out of 5 stars book is very helpful
Ising this dictionary has helped me to become a better player.

4-0 out of 5 stars The "official" word on what's acceptable
The official scrabble dictionary (OSD) serves its purpose: it is the authority when settling disputes. The make quality is that of your average mass market paperback, and so is the price. The definitions, on the other hand, are really perfunctory (but what do you expect?). Some words in the dictionary, like Za, Ka, and Ai, are surprising because they're not found in the commonly owned dictionaries. This makes playing with the OSD a different game, one in which it pays to memorize these little words.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Dictionary
I have had other dictionaries, however for getting to the grass roots meaning of a particular word, this is the dictionary to have on the bookshelf. It settles all disputes over the correct meaning of words. The CD Rom is excellent as I have it loaded in both my home computer and work laptop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best dictionary for the non-fanatic
I did a fair bit of internet research reading to try to determine what the best dictionary was in the $100-$150 range. For the non-fanatic, this 2-volume set covers pretty much everything you need.If you are a word fanatic, then drop $1000 on the 20-volume OED.The layout of the Shorter OED (think "unabridged") is superb, and the entries are up-to-date, unlike the "new" editions of some competing dictionaries. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars basic info
This dictionary and thesaurus is very basic, not realy that helpfull for college.I do like having the thesaurus available right there though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all writers and students.
What makes this particular resource so valuable is that each page of the book has the dictionary section on top and the thesaurus section on the bottom. So, if you're looking up the definition of a word you don't have to hunt around in another section of the book for a similar word - it's on the same page. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Many, very short (!) definitions
From the point of view of a learner of the English language (advanced level), as I am, I have to admit that this dictionary is not as good as I expected.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Queen's English
You wouldn't know it from the misspellings in my reviews, but I'm never without the Concise Oxford, which I consider the best all-around dictionary. Why? It's sort of a "best-of" distilled from the twenty volume definitive Oxford Dictionary (and somewhat easier to carry). It's reasonably priced, at least compared to that mammoth set, and it does what you'd want a dictionary to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars The World's Most Trusted Dictionary
Concise Oxford English Dictionary is a great dictionary for any type of person. It not only gives a definition of a word but also what language the word came from. With over 1,600 pages, it's worth much more then $18.00! This dictionary is truly the world's most trusted dictionary! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Brevity is its greatest virtue
A simplistic and self-serving rant?A paean to Theory X?Or was the author just a little cranky that evening? One thing it is not is a work worthy of the "timeless classic of motivational literature" tag that has been applied to it.It is not the first nor last time that passion will be mistaken for profundity. The author's Apologia in this edition starts with "This literary trifle...", he need have gone no further.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unapologetic and to the point

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely helpful dictionary
This is an extremely useful dictionary for an English as Second Language learner like me that has okay vocabulary and speaking ability but often doesn't know exactly how to express myself under some contexts. The dictionary cover mundane topics like "placing a telephone order for pizza", but I don't see that as drawbacks.Quite on the contrary, the book becomes so useful right because the topics and approriate expressions are very handy and can be applied everyday!

3-0 out of 5 stars not really
i found this book honestly not very useful, i mean, the context, and the purpose of this book is not clear, if they were trying to teach us how to speak in some basic places, they had to teach by writing a vocabulary list for each situation, not sentences, you can't apply them everytime in a daily life, but some works, i'm okay with that, but generally i perefer a vocabulary builder for that,...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good tool for increasing your spoken expressions!
I found this book very useful for someone who wants to increase his conversational skills in a short period. You can find lots of expressions organized by topic. It is helpful in the sense that there are words with which you were acquainted at some point, and this book serves to refresh your memory of some forgotten expressions. It's just like entering data to your brain. This book is not intended to entertain you; it is rather in the form of a dictionary, and reading a dictionary is no fun. But if your ultimate goal is to broaden your expressions, this book is an excellent tool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy & Reliable
This mini dictionary is easily placed in a backpack, satchel, or briefcase and is a handy reference for those times when you are not so sure of spelling or usage.I love it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Merriam-Webster's Pocket Dictionary
Useful pocket dictionary, but why no "Foreign Words and Phrases" ? I and my family have been greatly indebted to the Merriam-Webster's Pocket Dictionary from the 1940s where the classy Latin section at the end of the dictionary serves to remind one of how rich human language can become if we are occasionally prepared to appropriate the elusive mot juste from a foreign language ! Also, it would be more enriching than a section of Abbreviations that are, after all, only a part of our culture's ephemera and not as lasting or deep-rooted as our reliance on Latinisms. That is the most obvious omission from the newer editions and I hope that it doesn't start a trend.

5-0 out of 5 stars good choice
I would refer anyone to this pocket dictionary. It doesn't have all the words that a book shelf dictinary has but it is a good second. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Dictionary
This is a terrible dictionary. Many of the words are spelled incorrectly and many of the definitions, while technically correct, are absolutely nonsensical.

2-0 out of 5 stars Shell out a little more for a lot more quality
i'm very sorry i bought this book.It may be concise, and it may be cheaper, but one shouldn't sacrifice spelling for saving a few dollars! The concise edition drops the dots off many of the letters, thus either misspelling the word or creating letters that don't exist.i borrowed the full-sized edition and found it to be fine.Don't waste your money and your sanity on this version!

4-0 out of 5 stars The best one I have found
This is the best Arabic dictionary I have found so far, but I still have a couple complaints about it. There are a few things missing, like the names of countries, and sometimes the print is small and hard to read. The Al-Mawrid dictionary is more complete, but can be overwhelming, especially for new students, becuase when you look up an English word, it lists a whole bunch of Arabic words and it is hard to figure out which on is the right word. This dictionary, however, has very clear explaination on when to use what word. I would give it five stars if it were a little bit more comprehensive. For the serious Arabic student, this is the best English-Arabic dictionary out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for...
This is exactly what I need. I, too, am a medical transcriptionist and am very short on desk space so I was looking for a compact dicationary. And lugging/dragging my old Dorland's off the floor every time I need to look up one little word is really getting to me! Soooo, I'm very glad to have found this handy little book. And it's right in my price range, too!! haha!

1-0 out of 5 stars It is a NO Star...
People...Please do not waste your money on this garbage. It is out of date, inaccurate and either too simplistic or too hard to understand (I am a physician's assistant).I'm not sure why Webster is letting the DREADED DELMAR get hold of their titles to ruin them like they are doing. This is the second piece of crap they've made out of something nice. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The 1200-Calorie-a-day Menu Cookbook
It is very informative and has several great recipes.Needs a few more pictures and a possible menu plan. But over all a good book to give you some recipes to get you started in planning your 1200 calorie a day menu.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misunderstanding
The only complaint I have about this book is that I thought it would help me cook a 1,200 calorie a day menu for myself.I was looking for a book to help me learn to cook for 1 or two.The recipes contained in this book are for 4-6 servings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful cookbook I own

Definitely for non-medical persons, this is a great book to have around the house when your friends/parents/kids call with their latest ailment. 5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST ASL Dictionary hands down!!!
The DVD itself is the reason to buy the book.It is very comprehensive and includes synonyms for the sign. The reason why you can not play the DVD on a standard player is because it allows the user the option to type the words to access a particular word instead of playing the DVD from start to finish. The DVD has an option for you to "slow mo" the signing of the "sign."
2-0 out of 5 stars very simple, not a lot of words
I am learning to sign and have purchased several books. This one is by far the worse. There are no directions for the movement of the signs, not any description or definitions of the signs. The pictures and words are simple. There is not a lot of complexity to this book. I believe it is overpriced and could be used by a child learning to sign words without knowing the definitions or history of the sign animation.(I admit that I have not tried the DVD yet, it might be useful.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ASL Dictionary I've Found!
As fas as ASL dictionaries go, this one is the best I've found. The pictures are clear, and the words are logically grouped. It even includes some local/regional signs. The best feature is the disc that comes with it.You type the word, and the sign come up on the screen, in the form of a video clip. They use many signers, so you get to see how different people shape their hands. Also, it includes advanced sign. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to understand the history of our country
This book will help you to comprehend the background of our country a little more as well as give a high-level overview of where the foundations of our nation came from.Covering literature to common everyday sayings as well as the scientific side of things from an origin perspective, you will begin to have an appreciation for what our forefathers went through as they strove to build a society in the grand ol' USA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down-and-Dirty Info
This book is excellent if you want to know concise bits of info about a particular topic (and it covers A LOT of topics, grouped nicely into categories in the Table of Contents). Then, if you want to delve further into an item, you can always hop on the Web. I gave the book to my 21-year-old son to help him start his own book collection, so I recently purchased another for myself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...
I bought this on recommendation and was excited about reading it.I received it and was taken aback at the format of the book.I thought it was a book you could read from cover to cover, etc....but it is more like a dictionary/reference book to address any questions you might have regarding any number of things.Stillis an interesting read though. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good dictionary
This dictionary contains terms that one would need to know for reading Church documents. Unfortunately, I give it three stars because it only goes from Latin-English. If you're trying to write in Latin, you'll be quite frustrated and need to find another dictionary. But if you're simply reading, this book will do the job admirably.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you know Latin and want a specialized dictionary
This is not a general Latin dictionary. If you are learning Latin, you are better served by the Collins Gem Latin Dictionary. However, if you already know Latin and want a reference specifically for Latin as used in Ecclesiastical documents, this is a good reference.Remember that it is a specialized subset.Think of it like a "Dictionary of Medical Terms".You would not use that dictionary to learn English, and you would not use this dictionary to learn Latin. You need a general Latin dictionary to compliment this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy , useful book
I agree with Ryan R. Grant's review below. It will be easier to use by someone with some familiarity with Latin. On the positive side, it is sturdily bound and neatly formatted with clear print on eye-ease paper--very convenient to use. But one thing that no one has mentioned so far is the accents. Following the practice of ecclesiastical latin, this dictionary uses acute accents to indicate the stressed syllable of each Latin word. This will be a minor annoyance for the user who tries to determine the stress on some verb forms. For example, the present tense of the verb "invenio" appears with the stress on the "e"; But there is no indication of how to determine where the stress falls on the second-person and third-person forms of that verb. On the other hand, in a classical dictionary where long vowels are marked by macrons; the lack of a macron written over the "e" in the verb "invenio" conveniently indicates that the "e" is short and that the stress must recede to the first syllable on those forms. Ultimately, the user of this dictionary will need to refer to a classical dictionary for this information. Another minor inconvenience is that I-stem nouns are not marked. There are about fifty of them in use; and although they can now be found on line with a little digging;it would have been convenient to have I-stem nouns indicated in this dictionary. ... Read more
