The BOOK for Telecommunications
This should be a mandatory book for anyone working in the telecommunications industry. Not only is it comprehensive, but the explanations are direct, easily understood and sometimes humorous. Anyone who uses "oxymoron" in an explanation gets my vote.

What if Daniel Webster had an irrepressible sense of humor?
I have been buying regularly updated editions of Newton's Telecom Dictionary for fifteen years now and will continue to do so as long as Harry keeps 'em coming.
The best Telecom resource

Great book ofr those using the SQL Plus command line or GUI tool

the glories of the command line
The glories of the command line. SQLPlus [I am not going to write that irritating asterix] is an acknowledgment of the reality that for many large computer programs and operating systems, a command line utility is vital. The book explains this for the specific instance of hooking to Oracle's database. It is meant as a definitive reference. Showing every command, often accompanied by example code.
great guide
I have found this book to be a really great guide that is easy to follow.The author provides a gentle, but thorough introduction to topics like creating reports, writing scripts, customization etc.He offers methodologies and alternatives beyond the syntax that you can find in the manual.For example, he presents and evaluates six ways one can achieve some kind of if-then-else flow control in SQL*Plus.

A truly useful primer for the beginning VSAM programmer.

Internet Computer Language Dictionary
A very concise, well-written dictionary of computer terms, language defintions, internet definitions, standards, computer interface devices, connectivity, etc. Terms are easy to find and the definitions are exact and to the point. There are even references to web sites where appropriate to further identify a term. The description of connectors is particularly helpful.

Useless
I can't count the number of computer terms and abbreviations I've looked for in this book -- looked for in vain, that is. The one that inspired me to go online and complain publicly was ICC. There is no ICC (International Color Consortium) reference! Unbelievable that this basic abbreviation has been left out of a dictionary of computer and internet terms. Save your money and use online resources for definitions and explanations.

If you are an average computer (or Internet) user whose requirements include a portable Computer/Internet Dictionary, I will recommend this one. It is handy, concise, and easy-to-use. But, if your computer knowledge is advanced, it will be wise to look for something else. This dictionary will not be of much benefit to you. Buy the original books, skip the poorly designed, hard-to-use software.
The NIDOTTE BOOK set is wonderful! Compact, infinitely user-friendly, accessible in every way, and head-and-shoulders above every other Hebrew/Theological dictionary for the Hebrew Bible for beginning and intermediate students. However, this particular SOFTWARE has some built in, severely limiting "gotcha's" that will throw average users off and even make it unusable. Zondervan offers an all-important "patch" on their web site, but it involves a 6-7 step do-it-yourself method in which you have to "open the hood" of Windows more than average users will feel comfortable doing. And even then, for this user, it still didn't work. By "didn't work", I mean that the all important "search" function simply doesn't work! It produces endless loops of error messages. The result is...a clunker...and for something that is billed as "version 5.1", it is a very surprising clunker. My advice is to stick to the multi-volume book set until these people figure out how to build software that doesn't come with built-in bugs! ... Read more

an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn to use applescript
this is just a great book im not sure where to begin this review. i am new to programming and i wanted to start off small and applescript seemed like just the thing. after reading tiger missing manual i decided to get this book on the recomendation of david pogue. i was not disapointed. applescript is really easy to use and this book shows you excatly how to use it(just like an missing manual book does). i highly reccomnd this and any other missing manual title to any beginner or power user. being a power user myself i definetly got my moneys worth from all these books. im currently reading iphoto 6 from david pogue and im allittle disapointed on that one its more of a "how to take pictures" than how to use iphoto. but iphoto being such an intuitive program you really don't need much to learn to use it.

More like a travel guide
This is not a "manual" in any sense of the word. A manual tells you how, where, and when. This is more like a tour guide of Applescript. Sure there are scripts, but few of them make the Mac easier to use than its own OSX interface. The information is presented in such a scattered form, that it is hard to follow for very long, and therefore hard to learn. It's like trying to learn to be a chef by watching the Cooking Channel.

a must read for a beginner
I wanted to learn MVS assembler , and this book helped me to achieve it , use it as the first book , the one's who introduce you slowly but surelyto the MVS assembler world , then if you want to discover system programming stuffs search for the book written by Carmine Cannatello (Advanced ..), unfortunately those books are rare these days.

At what level is this text written?
My favorite JCL books were those by Mani Carsthanassis,`Expert MVS/(ESA and XA) JCL.Unfortunately these were published in 1991 and 1989 and do not contain features introduced since then. Excellent resource for usage and examples.
This is one book that I would not want to have to do without. Worth every cent, an excellent resource for sample code, utility programs, and infromation. Doug Lowe has a very good style that makes it easy to learn.One of my best buys!

Saving Keystrokes
Very helpful if you are in medical transcription.I am not sure how this would work if you were in another field, but for med trans, it is well worth the money.

I found it very useful!
I bought this book about six months ago and have absolutely written all over it!When I saw that the only review on it was rather negative in tone, I was inspired to present my own opinion.I am a working medical transcriptionist and I have used Ms. Rolland's techniques since day one and continue to add more shortcuts to my expander list every day.It has shaved so much time off my transcriptions.I have written extensively in the "white space" as I took the shortcuts I already used and expanded them as she explains with her technique.Although it seems that it would have been lovely to have long lists of shortcuts provided, I agree with the author that providing already-assembled lists of shortcuts would have done very little good. Instead, Ms. Rolland teaches you a technique to develop your own list of shortcuts.I have used many shortcuts that she has suggested and typed them into my own lists, with any changes I deem necessary for the accounts that I actually type for.I have inherited from other transcriptionists their lists of shortcuts and have found them to be extremely non-helpful and in some ways even harmful.The author really wants you to use YOUR thought process in developing shortcuts that work for you, not for her. For example, I am extremely left-handed (my right hand is very weak and not very coordinated), so most of my shortcuts are weighted toward using the left hand: hx for hospital, sx for surgery, rx for prescription, dx for diagnosis, ds for diabetes, etc., etc., etc.But, when I talk to other people, they are shocked because they would never use that many x's.They hate trying to hit the x. Also, your own shortcuts -- that work with the way your brain thinks -- are much easier to remember.I have tried to remember other MTs shortcuts, and I can never think of them.For example, cmpy is cardiomyopathy for me, which really does not make a lot of sense, hoty is hypothyroidism (ditto), apth is adenopathy and so on.
Rather Useless
Production medical transcriptionists, the tens of thousands of hard-working women and men who document your medical history, know that the key to making a living wage in this era of off-shoring, voice recognition, and EMR experiments, is the use of a word expander, software which converts 'tpcosob' to "The patient complains of shortness of breath."Yet most medical transcription schools and community colleges fail to teach students to use these valuable tools.Diana Rolland wants hers to be the textbook these schools will use when they wake up to the realities of 21st-century transcription.Unfortunately, the book is poorly written and provides little information that can't easily be found on the internet at http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/index.php or many other sites by googling 'medical transcription productivity' or 'medical transcription expanders.'One should also explore the web sites for the expanders themselves:Instant Text, Shorthand, and Stedman's SmarType being the ones most frequently used by working MTs.Once again the publisher, Stedman's, proves how out of touch it is with the needs of the working MT:This text could have been made marginally useful with the inclusion of a CD-ROM containing a complete, sensibly worked-out beginning glossary list (in each of the above 3 expander formats) incorporating all the standard sentence particles that comprise the bulk of the reports we transcribe, as well as names of diseases, drugs, and equipment, so that those new to expander use don't have to reinvent the wheel.Instead, white space abounds on the majority of the pages as the author has provided hundreds of blank lines so that the reader can work out her or his own short forms and expansions following the examples given.Trees are crying over the publication of this text; if you must buy it, please buy it used. ... Informational for beginner's
I purchased this as a reference guide for my mother. I think it's a great tool for those whowant to expand their abilities in the computer world.

Very helpful
I get a bit nervous at the idea that a company like Microsoft would get into the business of Computer Dictionaries out of concern for a conflict of interest - that perhaps words specific to competitors might be left out or altered. However, there is something compelling about the idea of a dictionary of computer related words written by people who are in the business of using those words, and I do find this edition to be fairly balanced. GOOD, BUT NOT THE BEST VALUE
Yes, this edition of "Microsoft Computer Dictionary" has been revised and updated, when compared to the previous editions. Its 10,000 entries centered on software, hardware, and internet terms. They are easy to understand. But the fact that Microsoft stopped adding attached CD-ROMs (with this edition), without any significant price reduction is irritating. It depicts the company's insensitivity to the consumer needs.Read more
