A Masterful Triumph
The third edition of the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church retains its great reputation as the single best reference work for use when studying the Christian religion. Now in the hands of E. A. Livingstone (who took over for the late F. L. Cross), it combines excellent scholarship from all parts of the Church and presents each topic relatively free of ecclesial bias. The topics covered are not short descriptions of a few sentences but multi-paragraph articles that are well researched, very readable, and remarkably complete. For those who are developing an interest in Church history, it will be an indispensible tool for their research. All in all, it is a masterful triumph.
An apologia for Catholic tradition, not a dictionary
As the title says the book is rife with Catholic apologetics.Catholicism is the touchstone used to compare pretty much every belief and "ism" to (i.e. protestantism, arianism, etc...) This review is not to make a case for or against Catholicism, but to demonstrate the ludicrous "scholarship" of this work, as opposed to what one would expect from any work claiming to be a "dictionary."Instead of spending it's words on the historical aspects/development of a given belief, the entries are dominated by apologias for, or against, said belief from the Catholic point of view.This behavior is exemplified in the treatment of the Trinity doctrine entry, and oddly, a venomous attack on Jehovah's Witnesses(while giving fair accounts to pretty much every modern religious movement that Catholicism generally deems: "heretical.").

Pleasant, nonthreatening way to teach basic English skills.
Each time I get a new Hispanic student with limited English proficiency, I purchase a copy of this book for him.My ESL students are all incarcerated men with various educationalbackgrounds.Even those students who have very limited skill in reading Spanish have found this book helpful.One student carried the removable fold-up phrase card in his pocket daily for a couple of months.I would not suggest using this text as the sole teaching material in a classroom setting, but it can serve as an invaluable teaching/learning aid.

Excellente
This is an excellent book for teaching hispanic children and/or adults to learn alot of basic English language. It gives good examples and utilizes them in situations so the pupil may learn at their own pace.

Great book
This provides a lot of important information for people who want to get published in the poetry market!

who knew he was right?
i was introduced to this book by Mangrove editor Neil de la Flor, who at the time was my instructor in a poetry class. he told me if i want to get published or become familiar with the community of poets i should look into this book. i did not buy the book. then Maureen Seaton, a published poet and my advisor, told me about Poet's Market. alright, still did not buy it. this semester i was buying textbooks and had some money leftover, i was going to spend it on junk i did not need but then saw Poet's Market on display at my university bookstore. wow, what a great book. it's basically the yellowpages for publishing houses. this is a definitive guide/resource/phonebook/whatever for getting into the realm of becoming a poet. it is alphabetized for simplicity and then there is an index that allows you locate publishing houses by category and topic.
My Bible to getting published---
I could not go a year without this useful tool. I am new to writing poetry, but I have been published now with the help of Poet`s Market, with their advice and numerous submission listings. I`ve never had a writing class or attended a workshop about poetry, but if I had to recommmend one book to get you started without any formal training, this would be the one. Well, worth the investment. Stop throwing your money away on dozens of magazine subscriptions just to get some publishing leads. Excellent Resource
As a teacher for community Adult ESL classes with 100% Spanish speaking students I can say that my classes are THRILLED with this bi-lingual, pictoral resource.I know some schools of thought resist the use of native language but my students find comfort and help with the bi-lingual translations (as do I as a Spanish Language learner).This book gives you lots of bang for your buck and the teacher resource materials are very useful, too!!!

Great for ESL or for teens and up learning Spanish
I used this for several years in my Adult ESL classes - the words, and matching up the numbers are a little cumbersome for any age younger than junior high, I think. The only drawback is the lack of phonetic spelling - I think we expect it from a dictionary, but most picture dictionaries leave that part out for some reason.

Brevity is its greatest virtue
A simplistic and self-serving rant?A paean to Theory X?Or was the author just a little cranky that evening?One thing it is not is a work worthy of the "timeless classic of motivational literature" tag that has been applied to it.It is not the first nor last time that passion will be mistaken for profundity.The author's Apologia in this edition starts with "This literary trifle...", he need have gone no further.

The mother of all German dictionaries
If there is a word in the German language, this venerable tome has it.It is a constant reference and I find the section on business correspondence especially helpful when I am looking for the corrent way to phrase a request/order just so.My edition, published in 2001, does not have the section on internet-lingo, but that just adds to it's versatility.

Highly recommended for any dancer any age

All the grammar in a single textbook - yay
I had to have this as reference for a college class I took.It has 16 chapters, each with the usual new grammar concept, new vocabulary words and exercises that stress that grammar and vocab.Each has reading passages about Germany in German and dialogues that reinforce concepts in that chapter.It covers the basics and is a fine text book.But here is something super super cool:It covers all the grammar.So you can use it for German 1 and German 2.This makes it a good choice for college classes to teach from, and a good book to review on you own if you already know German but want to brush up.
Complete as it gets...
For the absolute beginner, this book (especially combined with the workbook, with exercises complete with answers in the back) is fabulous.IT DOES USE THE NEW REFORMED SPELLING, which is a PLUS PLUS PLUS. (In each chapter there are 2 vocabulary boxes with the vocab used in context within mini-dialogues, arranged by verb, noun, adj., idioms, etc. and grammar.(Be forewarned, don't attempt to swallow all the grammar in one chapter in one gulp, that's where the workbook comes in to test what you really know).There is a cultural section at the end of each chapter explaining German culture (women's movements, WWII, etc.) and also additional thematic vocabulary.The explanations are in English and are clear and easy to comprehend.The wonderful thing is that this book has an Einfuhrung, where the names of the letters, numbers, articles, formalities, and basics are printed out.The lively pictures are a great adjunct feature and IT'S NOT DRY, there is some personality in the instructions and dialogues.The characters in the dialogues have attitudes and emotions. german language learning

Good for Beginners
This book is clear, with sketched pictures instead of photographs.It places the signs in the order that one would use them in ASL.While I would recommend this book for beginners in sign, it just doesn't offer much vocabulary beyond conversational sign.

Do we really need political bias in a tranlation book?
I was really looking forward to using this book on our next trip to Paris, until I read the section in which it defines Jean-Marie Le Pen's Front National party as an "extremist, racist party". I mean, after the events over the past year (car burnings, riots, cartoons, etc) it would behoove Mr. Steve's to pray that Le Pen's party wins the next election, or he will be writing a book on how to speak Arabic instead of French

Great for learning the basics
I am very impressed by this book and how easily it teaches the pronunciation of this difficult-to-learn language.It's pocket-sized, and has commonly used words inside the front and back covers for easy reference.There is also a handy 'menu guide' --- very important for travellers with finicky eating habits!We leave for France again in a month ... and definitely feel more comfortable approaching the language barrier with this book in tow.

great remedial course
I haven't spoken French since high school, & I'm planning my first trip to Europe (including Paris). This book is really helping me remember all the tricky parts of the language, but it doesn't bog me down with the grammar that my old French teacher tried to drill into my head! Read and Speak Arabic for Beginners
This book is okay for someone who wants to learn Arabic as the formal language as in books, Quraan, writings, and news, not the everyday spoken language.This book is not for you, if you want to learn a particular dialect from a particular country.

This is a good book for people starting to learn Arabic.It has useful phrases and explains the language well.A good trick the book uses is to write names like "Jane" in Arabic.It's much easier to learn to read Arabic if you work with words you know.

Laughs, gasps, aha's and oy veys
Born to Kvetch is, at one time, informative, enlightening, synical, humorous, and irreligious.I learned so much about the Yiddish language, Jewish mores and their beginnings, Jewish and Yiddish history and interpersonal relations.At times I was in tears of laughter or a tear of sadness; amazed or embarrassed and often shocked by Michael Wex's irreverence.
Humorous and well researched
Michael Wex has written a book that is both scholarly and hilarious!He has succeeded in describing the complex origins of the Yiddish language with the humor of a stand-up comedian.This book is not for those unfamiliar with Jewish-Yiddish culture.The humor will be lost for you.However, for those who grew up in such an environment, you will find yourself laughing outloud.Some of his descriptions regarding the development of Yiddish are a bit confusing, but for the most part, this book is an enjoyable read and an accurate portrayal of Yiddish culture.

Terrible
Like someone else said, I agree THERE ARE NO REALLY GOOD ARABIC TEXTBOOKS - (I haven't seen Elementary Modern Standard Arabic but a lot of users complained about it), incosistencies start from page one with this particular one, even with some basic lessons from other textbook I am not able to use this book on my own. I appreciate the efforts put into making this book, though (otherwise I would rate it with one star) - lots of DVD recordings, pictures but the author might want to look at how other languages are taught.
Not a systematic approach to language-learning. . .
Despite being the "new, revised edition", Al-Kitaab 2nd Edition is still lacking. . .
There are no outstanding Arabic instruction books!
Why is this? Why are Arabic instruction books sooooo atrocious? There is sufficient demand for Arabic now and sufficient research in language education to come up with something better. What a sad testament that Al Kitaab is actually the standard in university-level Arabic instruction! It makes me want to rip my hair out. Somebody, anybody, PLEASE publish a decent Arabic instruction text. And, for all you publishers out there doing colloquial Arabic: EGYPTIAN!!A third of all Arabs are Egyptian and it's the only dialect universally understood by other Arabs. So please quit with all the Lebanese, Saudi, Iraqi, Jordnaian colluquial courses until there is a decent Egyptian course available. ... Read more

Excellent - But Not For Beginners
