5-0 out of 5 stars Always Exceptional
Over the past few years doing business with Amazon.com has always been a pleasure. Prices are good... shipping expedient... and customer service has addressed all of my concerns promptly and courteously. Every purchase has been exactly what is advertised and in top condition. Many great deals to be had if you take the time to research the site.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for medical writing and editing.
As someone who does medical writing and editing frequently, this resource is essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dorland's is my fave!
I have the current edition (30th) and I absolutely love it! Another plus is you are given a code to be able access their online dictionary as well! It's a great book with great illustrations as well. From what I can see it is very thorough. I haven't run across a medical word yet that wasn't in it! :)I'm a new MT so I don't really have anything to compare Dorlands too, but I know that I'm hooked on it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Visual Dictionary of Architecture
As with other materials by Francis D.K.Ching, the illustrations are not only clear and precise but aesthetically pleasing. It is a pleasure to read through the material for a comprehensive understanding of architectural concepts, presented in an historical perspective which clarifies the how and why of modern day building technology. The Visual Dictionary of Architecture
5-0 out of 5 stars Ching's books are great!
This book is really good for architecture students. I do not use the book every day, but when I need it, it proves very usefull. All books from this author that I purchased are really good so far. This one has a lot of details drawings which are great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and read and understand

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Your Title Search Here
If you're looking for a title to your novel or original screenplay, start with this exhaustive compilation of the great quotations of the world. Another reason to use it is to find out whether it was Mark Twain or H. L. Mencken who first said dotty things about California!

5-0 out of 5 stars BARTLETT'S QUOTATIONS DESIGNED FOR THE 21st CENTURY
At age 82, with a lifetime of writing, speaking, and using appropriate quotes, I have purchased and implemented timely quotations from each new Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. The new 17th Edition has kept pace with the passing years and persons without sacrificing the wisdom of the ages.
5-0 out of 5 stars still the best
Bartlett's is still the best resource for researching quotations, better than anything I found on the net, including a site that was called Bartlett's.The print Bartlett's does an excellent job of cross-referencing, so when I wanted to track the original source of a quotation, only the print Bartlett's solved the problem. That's why I bought this copy for my local library.Computers haven't solved every research problem yet. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars over-rated and not worth the $
For much less than the price of this lexicon, one can purchase a copy of Thayer's, AND Trenchard's vocabulary guide AND a Greek concordance.Academic snobs make a big deal about how Thayer's lexicon is out of date because he did not have access to the papyri, but for 99% of New Testament words and meanings this is not an issue.Trenchard's book is actually MORE helpful, in my opinion, than this or any lexicon because he simply lists every possible meaning of each word. One way to get to the essence of a word's meaning is to look at the cognates, and Trenchard lists them all.A Greek concordance will actually print all the NT uses of a word in Greek.Bauer's lexicon is just not that helpful and is too wordy.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best Greek-English Lexicon That Money Can Buy
This is the most comprehensive Lexicon of Koine Greek available. I like how for almost every word, the lexicon gives you an extensive list of how this word is used in not only the New Testament, but in some of the Christian literature of the post New Testament era.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard for NT Greek
This by far is one of the best, if not thee best Greek NT lexicon available. Of course the 3rd edition adds to this monument of scholarly work. It is a bit time consuming to look for the words in Greek, but if God has put that hunger in your heart then press on. You will not be disappointed with the purchase. The other "Greek Lit." that is referenced is helpful, but if you want just NT references then buy the BAGD "Shorter Lexicon". Either way I pray that you continue in the path that the Lord has layed out before you. Seek the Lord with all your heart...lean not on your own understanding...He will make your paths straight...God Bless You. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not awful, but not perfect either
This is an alright text book. It does what it's meant to do. A person can learn Italian from this book as long as they are also in a class as well, but it definately has some flaws. One -it needs more examples of some of the more difficult grammar points. Two - the order is strange. Why did you start with avere? Somehow essere seems like a better place to start. And the chapter themes! They pretend that they have chapters arranged by topic, but it seems very haphazard to me. Also, several major grammatical topics are missing from this book, and as a result, many of my teachers have had to give us multiple hand outs to compensate. It's ok - but it could be a lot better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource
I read this entire book across two college semesters before moving to Italy. After having spent $500 or so on Italian language books, this is one of the few that was worth the money.Even though I speak fluently, I still refer to this book frequently to resolve difficult tense questions or clarify grammar details.I highly recommend this book to any serious student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the next edition, or stick to the 4th!!
I took 3 semesters of Italian, with each semester covering 1/3 of the book, so I completed the entire book. This book is good if you follow it in a traditional classroom setting, especially since the proffessor pointed out all the mistakes in this book, which unfortunately, are quite numerous for a textbook.I have also checked out the 4th edition, which is much better than this one as it is better structured and contains useful charts,(which are now omitted)and is thoroughly proofread. The 6th edition just came out, so hopefully it is an improvement from the 5th. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am really amazed of how much idioms and colloquial expressions you can learn just by listening to the CD. And guess what - these are idioms and phrases you REALLY hear everyday on the street, usedby most people in everyday situations. Before, my English sounded a bit "artificial" and somehow forced. Now, the more I used the idioms I learnt here, the more natural and even friendly I sound to the native speakers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
This is a good book to read, esp. for non-native English speaker. I learn many new expressions with ease (because the book provides proper context). The reason I give 4, instead of 5, is that there are (too) many repetitions throughout the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A simple yet clever way to break into the "idiom barrier"
Remember your good old Englishtextbook which started with an introduction of the characters who would be in the dialogs throughout the units? That's how this book is laid out. Idioms are contextualized and there are various consolidation exercises between units to reinforce them. The accompanying CD is very clear and the voices convey the moods of the characters - although I must say that the man who does Bob's voice sounds incredibly boring at times as his voicedoesn't seem to show much pitch variation. Some of the idioms are alreadyknown to most high-intermediate students, but there are many others to learn, so it can certainly satisfy those studentswho resent not having enough "real-life"vocabulary in class. It may alsobe useful for the student working on his own, once the explanations are very clear. In a nutshell: It's worth buying if you're looking for a simple - yet effective - way to explore the most common idioms of American English. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Neat Dictionary!
I am in high school and was in serious need of a decent dictionary.I didn't want to spend a fortune either.I saw this dictionary and gave it a try... I LOVE IT!Great pictures and nice quality.Very helpful! My friend ended up buying one also and enjoys it as much as I have. I highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any student library
My son is 10 and in fourth grade. We use this dictionary just about everyday for studying poetry. So far, every word we've looked up has been there and with enough explanation to really make sense. We looked up the word "tread" - there were several definitions (about 4 inches worth), but each gave a sentence for context, which helped him pick out the right definition to apply. We also looked up "limerick" - the definition given was complete in that it actually included the rhyming scheme used, which was not included in two other dictionaries we have. There are color pictures and the the writing is large enough for him to read.It was also very reasonably priced. We are very happy with this Dictionary; we liked it so much we bought the American Heritage Thesaurus to go with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I stayed up late last night reading my daughter's dictionary!
My six year old needed a dictionary to look up words for her Junior Great Books homework. At first, I was drawn to dictionaries written for 8-10 year olds. They had larger print and flashier, more colorful pictures.Unfortunately, they didn't do the job of providing definitions for the unfamiliar words we needed to define (this week we needed to find tun, puncheon, bewail, and beadle.)I was forced to look at dictionaries aimed at an older audience and found that many were just not visually appealing.I didn't want a bland reference book that would be opened as little as necessary.I wanted something worth flipping through on a rainy day.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BOOK for Telecommunications
This should be a mandatory book for anyone working in the telecommunications industry. Not only is it comprehensive, but the explanations are direct, easily understood and sometimes humorous. Anyone who uses "oxymoron" in an explanation gets my vote.

5-0 out of 5 stars What if Daniel Webster had an irrepressible sense of humor?
I have been buying regularly updated editions of Newton's Telecom Dictionary for fifteen years now and will continue to do so as long as Harry keeps 'em coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of all reference grammars
This book is undoubtedly the most comprehensive grammar of the English language ever written. It is an absolute 'must have' for any non-native English speaker who wishes to use the language competently. It will even make an excellent textbook for ambitious intermediate and advanced students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Useful, but...
As the title and price suggest, this is a reference grammar of English, not a textbook. It's written for people who already have a grasp of basic grammatical principles. This is the sort of book that you pick up when you want to look up patterns of verb complementation, etc. Only a masochist would try to read it straight through, or to learn grammar from it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Latin students
There is no other place to start when looking for the history of specific Latin words and phrases. This dictionary is a must for all those who have more than a passing interest in the Latin language. It is clearly laid out and the text is very readible. Overall a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Oxford Latin Dictionary- A Must Have
There are many reasons to recommend this superb reference work, here are a few. Firstly, as to be expected, clear and accurate definitions are given for even the most obscure words. Secondly, there is high quality in the book and binding. Thirdly, the excellent type-face makes for easy reading. And lastly, there is great pleasure in adding such a seminal work in lexography to one's library.

At last!A Latin Dictionary with print big enough to read using bifocals!!!The scholarship of this work is unquestioned, as is its comprehensive character. No more looking in vain for some elusive term.Others have commented fully on the substantive wonders of this magnificent dictionary.I write only to add that this work is very accessible--even to those of us with tired old eyes.I know it is costly, but it is well worth the price! ... Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have been pushing this book on their students since it was first published in 1957.Co-author White later revised it, and it remains the most compact and lucid handbook we have for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Dread Looking Things Up?
The Elements of Style makes grammatical research so easy, you'll want to look up things you'd always wondered about but thought would take too much time. Recently someone asked me about the use of the serial comma, and, as it was about text we were going to put on the dust jacket of a book, it was sufficiently important to look up. It turned out to be the second item in the Table of Contents. First you get the general rule, in this case "In a series of three or more terms with a single conjunction, use a comma after each term except the last." The example given is "gold, silver, or copper." The sole exception is a series of names in a business: "Brown, Shipley and Co." There! With thirty seconds effort, the issue was adjudicated. I can't recommend it highly enough. Thank God for the Fourth Edition. My Third Edition is dog-eared with use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Reading
This little book is important reading for any one who has or is desiring to write. One of the best things that I could say about the book is that it is full of examples that are juxtaposed. Every element is clearly defined in such a way that any one can easily see the difference between the examples given. This book is a "how to" book for proper use of english in written form. It seemingly covers everything you could imagine from the use of commas and omiting needless words to expressing yourself clearly and not overwriting. The five chapters are: 1. Elementary Rules of Usage 2. Elementary Principles of Composition 3. A Few Matters of Form 4. Words and Expressions Commonly Misused 5. An Approach to Style.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Indispensable!
Anyone doing any writing, regardless of the purpose, must have a copy of this handy little reference book right next to their dictionary and thesaurus. "Elements of Style" is an indispensable little guide full of superb tips for the correct use of the English language. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish in 10 Minutes a Day
This text is either for the very beginning beginner or a good review for the person who has been away from Spanish for a time.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good Start
I have read almost all of the book. Along with the CDs I think the set would be very good for a beginner but not enough for adequate conversation. No conjugation rules mentioned. You have to be enrolled in a spanish teaching class to fill in the defecits that this set have. Overall I think my spanish improved alot from 0% spanish to 50% now, which is not bad to a beginner....

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product
We are a homeschooling family and we were looking for a good beginning Spanish program. This program was recommended to me by several people so I thought we would give it a try.My daughter and I are learning together and we are finding this program easy to use and alot of fun.I think it would be a great program for older elementary (my daughter is 14) - adult. The CDs are a must because they teach you the correct pronouncation for each word. The stickers are a great way to incorporate Spanish into your everyday life. Excellent program. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learning Spanish for educational purposes and for those who are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country. ... Read more

(translation of title:Very excellent for everyone who wants to learn the language!)
4-0 out of 5 stars ¡Destinos es muy fantastico!
I'm using Destinos in a telecourse, and am having lots of fun with it, and even learning some Spanish. My listening skills have improved dramatically, since the video is the main learning tool, which forces one to sharpen up and really listen to what's going on.The workbook that accompanies Destinos is really detailed, making it possible to learn a considerable amount of Spanish grammar on one's own.Overall, the best Spanish textbook I've used yet!Adi

Editorial Review

In evaluating a children's dictionary, there are two test words wealways check first: "e-mail" and "iguana." After all, if "e-mail" doesn't appearin a dictionary, how up-to-date can it be? And iguanas, well, what kid doesn'twant to read all about this "very large tropical American lizard with a ridge oftall scales along its back"? We are happy to report that this fine dictionary isabove and beyond our gold standard. Not only are there definitions for each ofthe test words, there are illustrations for each, as well! This 912-pageillustrated dictionary is packed with great information, including world maps onthe inside covers, an easy-to-use how-to guide, and a reference section withfacts and maps of the continents, pictures of flags from countries around theworld, U.S. presidents and vice presidents, pronunciation guides, signs andsymbols, and lots more. Sandwiched between this wealth of facts and figures are846 pages of definitions with DK's trademark crisp, clear photographsillustrating many of the words. One of the handiest features in this volume isthe multicolored alphabet running down the outer edges of every single page, with the featured letter highlighted for easy reference when flipping through. So get out there and e-mail all your iguana friends about this terrificreference guide! 4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
I ordered this for my son who homeschools. We are doing 3rd 4th grades combined next year and this dictionary is perfect for elementary reference skills. He likes the colorful pictures and I think that the alphabet tabs on the page edge will be very useful to him when looking up words.Quite a nice book for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great dictionary
This is a great dictionary for kids. I received it in first grade, and it was used extensively in the past years. It has colorful photos illustrating various words, and the print is large enough for a young child to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMuist Have for Parents
Most DK products for children are outstanding and this is one of them. Well illustrated and comprehensive. It is a large hard back, not a small desktop reference. It is for third graders and up. The type is small and hard to read for children in lower grades. But my first grader loves the book because it is rich in features that fascinate him even though it is hard for him to read. He enjoys the flag section in the back and he enjoys the first rate gazetteer also in the back.

2-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
When I saw that this dictionary was based on "American English", I was excited to get it.But save your money, or, better yet, use it to buy the Oxford Russian Dictionary. You can easily cope with British spelling (e.g. centre) and you'll find a much more useful dictionary.I find it remarkable that a modern (1994) dictionary purporting to be based on American English completely omits words such as "Internet", "download", "e-mail", to say nothing of all the acronyms associated with computers.Incidentally, you can find them all in the Oxford!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very great
To put it one way, my russian professor, who is from Moldova, said that she would start using this disctionary. It is based off american english, which does make it more helpful. In the front pages gives most all of the rules of conjugating by the case, and the back appendix gives alot of proper nouns in russian. Its a really good dictionary to use, easy (heavy!), and very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
This book is a lot bigger, and better than I had expected it to be. I thought it was a smaller, pocket-ish dictionary. But, it is a good sized, 1100 page book. There are plenty of definitions. This is a high quality book. Worth every dime.

4-0 out of 5 stars learning a foreign language
I am still at the first stages, but learning a Italian is fun and the "Dummies" book is helpful!

3-0 out of 5 stars From an Italian teacher's perspective.. "www.nadasitaly.com"
It's hard to find that "perfect" Italian book to recommend to students, because I often run into these two situations: 1) the book is too in-depth and too focused on grammar; 2) the book is too superficial and more of a phrase-book for travelers, therefore not sufficient. SO, what I usually do is use a combination of books, this being one of them. It has some useful information on the culture, as well as practical expressions for the brave traveler. However, my recommendation is to take a basic course before traveling to Italy, because even knowing a few simple sentences can get you a long way. Also, in a group setting you'll be able to ask specific questions and to practice with others.I'm sure that if you check with your local community college, there are some short continuing education courses for foreign languages. If you need information on traveling to Italy and books to learn Italian, you can also contact me: nada@nadasitaly.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Very convenient!
