4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
One of the things about the journal "Consumer Reports" and its annual "Buying Guide" is that--because it does not accept advertisements--there's a good chance that biases in ratings are less apt to occur.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any wine buff who wants to latest news on the greatest wines
Seeking a pocket guide to the wine world which offers the latest insider's information on new vintages, upcoming trends, new discoveries, and the latest harvest predictions? You can't go wrong with Wine Report 2006, which was rated the 'Best Wine Book in the World 2004 and 2005' by Gourmand International: it packs a wealth of updated facts in a truly pocket-sized - albeit thick - edition and is a 'must' for any wine buff who wants to latest news on the greatest wines.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very handy and up-to-date resource for the wine lover...
Wine Report 2004 by Tom Stevenson is an exceptional reference for both the expert and the beginner.I'm in the wine business and have dozens of wine books which each have their merits.Mr. Stevenson's New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia is one of the benchmarks of the business and is respected world over. The Wine Report 2004 is a much smaller book in comparison, but it's chock full of information.Relying on local experts to cover the various regions of the world is a well chosen strategy. The Grapevine section at the beginning of each chapter provides juicy (no pun intended) gossip for wine insiders. It's also great to read the opinions of the experts and their predictions/hopes for the future of wine in their part of the world. The information inside is as current as it gets.Simply a great pocket reference for the wine insider.Well done!

4-0 out of 5 stars the best of the bunch
I have a few books on ebay and this one is the easiest most user friendly book i have encountered. Love the cartoons and the bit of tongue-in-cheek fun along the way. It is well organized and actually fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Beginner Guide to E Bay by Miller
This is an excellent reference guide if you intend to sell or4-0 out of 5 stars Best thing I've found about succeeding on eBay . . .
I've been a small-time bookseller on eBay since shortly after it started up, and it took awhile to figure out just what I was doing. I wish this book had been available then! Actually, it's become more difficult -- not easier -- ... ... Miller does a good job of explaining the best way to approach things, dealing with the eBay Establishment, handling deadbeats and frauds (buyers *and* sellers), playing the feedback game, and trying to decide if you can actually make a living from this thing. (Probably not for most booksellers, not without a real-world location to work from.) The chapter of shipping tips is especially worth reading. Of the half-dozen recent books about eBay I've read recently, this is probably the best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Organic Starter!!
Within the past 8 months I have switched my diet and lifestyle to an organic one. Since then I have been bombarded with people asking me why and what does it mean. I found this book in my research and think it is a very informative and practical guide to understanding why organic foods are so important, both for our health and for our environment!I have bought a bunch of these books and have been sharing them with friends and family. I recommend reading this book as a good starting point to truly understanding organic essentials!

Prior to my study on marketing and advertising, I had never really considered the role of selling socially unacceptable products (i.e. cigarettes, alcholol, porn) in our society. This book really helped me to realize the gap that exists and provided me with a wealth of information on the history of each of those markets, the issues and ethics behind them, the laws that govern them, and the design of their advertisements.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is FABULOUS!
Great read. I bought this book and the Baby Bargains book (mentioned in the review before me) and I have to say, there are SO SO SO many more tips and tidbits on how to save money in this book. If you are on a budget, this is the book to buy. This book is true to its' title. That other Baby Bargains book by Denise and Alan Fields has horrible reviews and I read that the authors write their own 5 star reviews and then slash all their competitors books with bad reviews just to try and get their rankings up higher. I think buying a book about good content is just as important as buying a book written by good people. This book is it. I also really liked the book,
2-0 out of 5 stars Author should have chosen original title!
I'm so annoyed - I bought this book thinking it was the other, the *original*, Baby Bargains, and was confused after reading through tip after tip about looking for sales and going to thrift stores. To me, it seems the author is blatantly trying to make money off another book's success. It does have some useful websites, but I wouldn't waste money on the book to get them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great suggestions, but some are common knowledge
My pregant friend told me about this book so I decided to read it.I'm not pregnant yet. There are 1,000 ideas in list form throughout the book and most of them I find to be very helpful. There are web sites listed in the book where you can sign up and receive coupons for all sorts of baby items.Instead of doing your own searching to compile a list, they are already there in the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars How do you co-opt a revolution you invented?
Being familiar with Thomas Frank's cultural criticism of the 1990s (see his brilliant _One Market Under God_, along with the two _Baffler_ anthologies), when I saw the title of this volume I immediately assumed it was yet another expose of how the culture industry co-opts the trends and fashions of genuinely cool youth. I was completely wrong -- what Frank has done is far more fascinating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Be Wise, Be Meaty, Be Frank
For those who occasionally wonder 'what are they thinking?' when confronted with the effulvia of advertising, Thomas Frank provides a cogent and often hilarious explanation that is spot on from beginning to end. It is hard to imagine a better reference for those hoping to understand the 'mind' of the businessman, whose thankless task is to penetrate the cacaphnous clutter of the affluent society (even as its affluence groans under the incubus of credit card debt and shrinks in the vise of job loss). Of course the ingenius solution is to associate the supernumerary product with the alienation of the customer, and thus is born the 'we're hip and we're on your side' approach that has been bombarding viewers every four minutes for the last thirty-five years, and whose prototypical consequence is a herd of middle class vagabond children gaily emblazoned with Coca Cola logos.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
An excellent examination of consumer culture and the way that corporate America has tried to deal with, understand, and co-opt youth culture (or did youth culture co-opt advertising?) Frank gets to the bottom of it all in an always entertaining look at advertising from the Madison Avenue years through the sixties. His examinations of various ad campaigns - such as Volvo who insisted in their ads that their cars were ugly and at least not as filled with defects as the cars they used to make - are insightful and well researched. In fact, this book is a necessary primer for anyone doing research on youth culture. It helped to change the way that I think about these issues and has become a text that I refer to often. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
This book has tons of great tips and overall is helpful to anyone looking to become more frugal and live more simply.Highly recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for those new to the lifestyle
If you're new to frugal living then I'm sure this book will be of great help to you.I've been living a frugal lifestyle for a few years now and was hoping I might get a few new suggestions by reading this book but unfortunately I was wrong.I would recommend this book to those who are interested in saving a bit here and there.Frugality doesn't mean that you need to move to a teeny tiny apartment, clip coupons and eat rice for every meal.If you're looking to get out of debt or maybe try to simplify your way of living, this book would be a great start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shame on Christine Walker for advertising here!
This book is a super basic beginners manual to saving and conserving money. For anybody who's starting out this will be a help. To those who were semi-frugal to start with, it won't offer much in the way of new stuff. This book is well organized in an easy to read and understand format.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful as a guide for two people only: The Authors!
Don't waste your bucks or quid on this weighty tome, use allmusic.com or iTunes instead.Due to the two author concept, this rather opinionated effort (and the authors must be commended for a very big effort) is nothing more than the jazz opinion of two guys. They show little empathy for musicians they don't care for, and omit many who they do not classify as "true jazz" (whatever that might be.)At least allmusic has a team of reviewers who are sympathetic to the musicians they happen to be writing about. What's more, allmusic doesn't take the slightly smarmy approach that these two do.Forget it.

2-0 out of 5 stars just a few remarks
I have a couple different editions of the Penguin Jazz Guides, and while I don't have the Seventh Edition of the CD Guide, I feel I can say a few things in general.
4-0 out of 5 stars Marvellous Book
Delightfully encyclopedic - its commentary is at the same time historical, musical, and addictively readable. So far, their reccomendations have not steered me wrong, however, I would say that their broad tastes are not for everyone. They will equally rate questionably listenable free jazz with the most divinely inspired bebop, and they aren't consistent in describing the sound and styles of lesser known artists, which makes investing in any of these a little nerve-wracking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info, but the online stuff is overblown ...
This book provides some good information on buying cars, and many of the tips suggested are spot on. But when it comes to the role of computers and the Internet in this equation, the author really needs to do more research for the next edition of this book. I work for one of the bigger online car-buying sites as well as providing support for car dealerships in getting their inventory online, and I thought it important to clear the air about a few things.
5-0 out of 5 stars 20 yrs since I first read this, and it still works
I first read this book back in 1985 when I bought a Mazda 626.Got it for exactly 3% over the dealer's invoice, and this was before the day when they'd share that very readily.I've bought several cars over the years with the knowledge I've gained from this book and I've NEVER felt taken. The sources of data are even better now than they were in 1985, so you can make sure you're not taken ever. What I've found is that as soon as the dealers know you know their cost and what's a fair price, you get a great deal fast. It's also one of the most entertaining books I've ever read that was teaching me something. Some of the best money you'll ever spend because it will pay you back 100 fold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy at your own risk w/o this book
I read the 1st or 2nd revision of this book and bought my first new car in '94.It saved me $2500.00 on my Nissan Altima.I still have the car today.I have bought 2 other cars since then and it saved me money everytime.I am getting ready to buy another car and can't find my copy of the book.I am going to purchase the book again to brush up on my car buying skills.I am sure the dealer's have come up with some new tricks to get into my wallet in the last 12 years.I recommend this book to all my friends who are buying cars.Besides being informative, the book is humorous and is a fun read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet literature...Know what you read.
In response to some criticisms of Erikson's work, I would like to say that I agree on the level that the research she provides is suspiciously insufficient to back her claims. We are bombarded with "iffy" words like, "almost all", "may", "might", "greater risks than" and so forth. I have a personal peeve against those types of words, but that did not cause my interest in her book to wane.
1-0 out of 5 stars She is guessing, and does sloppy research

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book EVER!
Wow-- this is this honestly the best book about college ever... EVER. I am graduating high school next month and I read this book as soon as it came out, and it helped me get into my top choice! There is so much information in here, I even made my older brother read it, and even though he graduated from college already he said it was a really great book, very interesting and lots of facts you never would have known.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic value and a great help!
College Prowler puts out some great guidebooks, they're all written by current students so readers are given a real insider's look at these schools. The guidebooks typically retail for $14.95 each. For those who are looking at one or all eight Ivy League schools, this book is a great value. You're basically getting eight guides in one, not to mention bonus chapters on admissions, athletics, secret societies and more. I've been flipping through this book since buying it from Amazon and have to say I'm quite pleased with my purchase. I'd recommend it to those currently in the midst of the college admissions process!

5-0 out of 5 stars Proud to be Ivy
This book is incredible! There are so many facts, figures, anecdotes, statistics etc. about The Ivy League (PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE) in this book that I was not aware of until now--and I am a Junior at Dartmouth--I attended Yale for a year, and I have visted four other Ivy schools on several occasions. After looking over College Prowler's grading criteria for each of the eight school sections, I determined that their grades and analysis on each aspect of each individual school (including: Academics, Local Atmosphere, Nightlife/Social Scene, Campus Strictness, Athletics, Drug Scene, Overall Experience, and even Parking) are actually very accurate and on-point. College Prowler has seemingly gained credibility over other Ivy League college resources, because they utilize actual Ivy students to author their individual guidebooks--which is why "Untangling" is a steal for under $20, because it includes content from each of the eight individual guides within. ...
