2-0 out of 5 stars There are Better Options
I ordered Peterson's at the same time I ordered the Bear's Guide on distance degrees.I should have stuck with the latter and saved a significant chunk of change. While Peterson's is larger, that is only useful if you plan to use it as a booster seat or door stop.

5-0 out of 5 stars so many amazing things to do and so little time!!!!
"The book is bland as far as pictures go...but the info inside makes up for it entirerly! The layout is basic & straight foreward but the websites on each particular job provide pics & other info for interested volunteers. There's a lot more international opportunities in it than in the book "The Back Door Guide to Short Term Job Adventures". I love how the book sorts the jobs by cost, length, season, location & type!" I am volunteering in Africa this September with an organization that I saw in this book. I am soooo excited!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars OPEN SOME NEW DOORS IN YOUR LIFE
Having spent the past seven years volunteer travelling around the world for my vacations, I can honestly attest to the fact that this extremely helpful reference book was my starting point for research into the culturally-enriching, service-oriented travel experiences which have changed my life. Provided inside this handy book are the names of the volunteer organizations which arrange and organize the travel, listings of the type of volunteer work and skills required and all of the necessary logistics. (Actually the only skill often required is a desire to serve and to learn.)4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for anyone who wants to be a volunteer.
This book covers all kinds of volunteerism, from ecologic to medical. From the USA to the far corners of the world. Not only does it contain volumes of information on agencies seeking volunteers, it also has a greatcross-referenced index, so that you can easily choose a "volunteervacation" to fit your interests, schedule, and your wallet. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Needs more thorough research.
While this book gives parents a good starting point in thier search for a good daycare/nursery/preschool there are other high quality services that were not mentioned. For example one glaring ommision is Smarter Toddler Nursery and Preschool on the Upper West Side which focuses on learning through the Arts. I hope the next edition of this directory will be better researched.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Only Book on the Subject
Sadly, if you have a small child in Manhattan, you probably need this book. The best I can say for it is that it is thorough.Although the book claims that it is the only source for information not written by the schools themselves, it might as well be by the schools themselves.Don't expect the book to make any judgements about any schools. This text simply presents the information in the way that the schools' promotional literature presents it.No judgements are made.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Book on the Subject
This is the only book available on Manhattan nursery schools. (Other information can be obtained through the Parents League.)The authors' book is thorough and factual, giving parents a complete introduction to early childhood schools, including admissions, school contact information, and school portraits. As a New York City educational consultant, I recommend this book as a starting point to all of my clients with young children. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Narrow Market
Choosing the Right College is a helpful guide book but it is directed to a specific market. The selection of schools is a bit random. The insights are mostly helpful; however, this book seems to be written for parents and their teens who are interested in attending colleges that are friendly to their ideological preference. Don't expect to see all major state or public universities.Interesting but not thorough. If you have money to spend, buy it; otherwise, look for a more complete guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great minus the narrow mindedness of authors
Initially, I did like this college guide when looking for colleges. It wasn't the fluff seen in the Princeton Review or Yale Guides (which seem more like an extention of the school guides than something which might actually be helpful in picking a college). However, on my second reading, I realized that Choosing the Right College was well, just that: a guide to choosing the RIGHT (as in right wing) college. Anything that isn't focused on and doesn't glorify Western Civilization is somehow not serious. If a college has a core that just happens to require a course on diversity (even if the other 99% of the core is focused on Western Civilization and topics like Math and Science), the core is no longer "serious" and you'll be advised to send Johnny to a place where he never has to know that there is whole other world outside of the West and Japan (for some reason, the authors didn't mind courses on Japan). According to the authors, learning about gender is wrong and thus no one should ever think about taking a course on gender. Also, learning about race and class is not even remotely scholarly. If you major in something African American studies and Latina Studies, then you aren't a serious student. Thus, you'll get the impression that just about half of all the most prestigious colleges (Harvard, Amherst, Oberlin, Berkeley just to name a few) are not "real" academic institutions but places for liberals to air their political views and stiffle academic progress. Yeah, right. I'm all for learning about Socrates, Hobbes, and Kant but it isn't a crime to also be exposed to Confucius, DuBois, or Al-Ghazali.
2-0 out of 5 stars Distorts the Truth
This book could have been the best college guide book had the authors not used it to promote their ultra-conservative agenda.I stumbled across this book while applying to college's last year.Unlike Princeton review and others, the reviews are lengthy and detailed. However, the authors derail courses such as AA studies, women and gender, and Latino studies and suggest that they are for non-serious students and a waste of time. They are quick to praise schools that require a senior thesis and a structured curriculum, but are at the same time notorious for their Greek culture and ubiquitous hard drinking. Some of the opinions offered can be out right offensive and reflect a narrow and ignorant point of view that was integral in elite college life of yesterday. The authors fail to realize the importance of multiculturalism and diversity on the college campus. The extreme political angle of this book distorts the truth and therefore the book fails to deliver on its promise on delivering the truth. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great resource
I have looked at several editions of this book over the past few years and am always impressed by the amount of information it provides. This book does a great job of providing information on universities by state and by focus of study. It gives plenty of information to help potential graduate students make more informed choices. My only complaint is a small one. I would prefer if they added a way to look up specific degrees. Right now you have to look up each school to see the degrees or look it up by focus. If you wanted to earn an EdD for example, you would have to look through every school or subject listed. Not a big deal, but my only suggestion for improving this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
This is a great guide to finding graduate schools in Psychology. It helped me in my master's and I hope it helps with going to my PhD.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Highway Bible
A few summers ago I drove from Los Angeles to Jacksonhole, WY & I was on a very strict diet to only eat organic fruits & vegetables.I discovered that that was nearly impossible to do in this country. I was shocked!! The junk food mentallity has taken over most of this country. Last summer while I was in Minneapolis at Ecopolitan Restaurant I was shown this book.Since that miraculous day, I now determine how I travel by which is the best route to go depending on what Healthy Highways recommends.I drive all over the country to various art shows & was going online to see where the best vegetarian places are.Because of this book I don't need to & I've made it my quest to try & go to as many places in this book as possible. It also makes traveling so much more fun & I feel better physically because I am eating better.I have driven throughtout the midwest, southwest, northwest, south & this year I hope to hit the east coast.Buy this book, it will literally save your life but be sure to telephone ahead to make sure the information is correct as some of the places have changed & it is better to be sure rather than driving all the way there only to discover it has closed or moved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vegetarian restaurants.
Good book to have as well as take on a trip. It was a gift to my daughter and she loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well organized for travelers
I like this book for several reasons. It is well organized with all the important information. It also has maps so you can carry it in your car and call ahead. The few restaurants/stores that I know of are exactly what the person who is trying to eat healthy or is on a special diet would be looking for. Thankyou! I will recommend it to all my clients. 4-0 out of 5 stars Ranking the pillars of our world
To sit down and attempt to devise a list that limits the billions of human beings that have lived to a mere 100 as the most influential is quite a Herculian Task. However, Michael Hart has essestially succeded where many a writer could have failed. There's no question that a list of this magnitude is open to debate and disagreement indeed I myself question the ranking of some the historical figures on this list. For example, Beethoven at #45, Oliver Cromwell at #41, and Michelangelo at #50, though certainly impressive and accomplished in their fields, should not (IMO) be ranked higher than Henry Ford #91, Joseph Stalin #66, or William the Conqueror #68 all whom have had a much more profound impact/influence on history and western civilation. Certainly many will question his decision to rank the Muhammad as the most influential person who ever lived. However, once one reads his reasons it begins to shed light on why a man who lived nearly 1500 years ago influences our lives even today.Hart's explanation and reasoning for ranking these historical figures where he does is sensible, thought provoking, and well written. This is book is terrific read for anyone interested in learning about the men and women( though only 2 appear on the list Queens Elizabeth and Isabella)who have influenced and continue to influence our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK THAT SHOULD BE REPUBLISHED
The 100 has been a life-changing book for me.It has "unlocked" history for me - allowed me to relate to it and retain information - like no other book I've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insights and a good read
The "Fiske Guide to Colleges 2006" is a wonderful guide book that provides good insights to many of our country's best schools. It gives the reader a good feel for the atmosphere and the culture of each college in addition to providing the facts and figures. It covers selectivity, quality of life, the strongest academic programs, as well as listing many of the other schools that its applicants consider. I found the Fiske Guide to be a guidebook with a heart and personality that gives you all the information you need. It's fun to read but doesn't overburden you with too much unnecessary data. It's a terrific place to start your college search.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor coverage of Ohio Universities
I bought this for my son, who will be leaving the military within the next year.I was disappointed at the number of schools covered, especially in Ohio. It did not cover public Universities such as Kent State or University of Akron. I am still not sure what group of students this book has some use for....

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Alone Would Suffice
If your overachieving child is destined for one of the selected schools in this book, you could probably do enough good (or harm in the eyes of your senior) with the information included in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars You may even find this book helpful in Windows
Unfortunately there is nothing quite like this book (at least that I have ever found) for Windows nmake. In a former life I was a Unix programmer and I found this book invaluable, especially for creating custom suffix rules and recursive makefiles. Now that I am a Windows developer, I still refer to this book on occasion.2-0 out of 5 stars Index very very shallow
Maybe this is a good book, but you wouldn't be able to tell that by the index.Something as basic as using conditionals with make(if .. then) should be indexed for easy referance.I've had to root through the book for various situations like this because the index was so sparse.I have had much more luck using the GNUmake online manuals which are free.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I recently had to work on our project's make file. The first look at it made me nervous. Fortunately I found this book. This book is a great introduction to unix' power tool 'make'.The authors clearly had enough experience to tell us what, how and whys. The first chapter generates excitement to continue on to the next ones. Chapters two and three must be read with lots of patience. Remember, 'make' is a complex tool used for complex projects. Its not an easy go.Troubleshooting section listed some common problems, which, by the way, are really helpful. The project management is good too.The only complaint I have with this book is it is a little pricey. For thirty bucks, I expect more bang. The authors could have updated the book with new breed of make tools like Apache's 'ant'. An example of building a project could have really helped. The man pages listed for 'make' on my unix system didnt take me far enough to grasp this tool. I highly recommend it to beginners. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely out of date
Time Out does a good job of detailing many options for what to do with yourself during your time off, but it is so woefully out of date that it mentions a few countries that are no longer in existence. It has very detailed information that must have been useful at the time it was written, but it can serve only as a stepping off point now. One would be better off going with something newer. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing but wildly unreliable
Be forewarned: Jonathan Gold's culinary prose is compelling reading, but any attempts to use this as an actual guidebook for restaurants in Los Angeles should be heavily researched first. Perhaps I just have extraordinarily bad luck, but each time I've tried to visit one of the restaurants, something's gone wrong. Aladdin Falafel (p. 2) no longer exists, though its sign is still up there on the corner mini-mall placard. India's Tandoori (p. 137) no longer serves Tandoori pizza, so temptingly describe in Rich's essay. Gagnier's Creole Kitchen (p. 109) in Santa Monica disappeared years ago. With that said, I would still recommend the book as a fun read for those who enjoy learning more about the culinary diversity available in Los Angeles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still Hungry
Some key spots were missing and that's a shame, but overall a good buy

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat and Learn from Jonathan Gold

5-0 out of 5 stars Muslim Organizations in North American (pre-2003)
From the book: "Chapter 1 offers a synthesis of the major influences shaping the ethnic and religious worldviews of Muslims,... Chapter 2 traces the Muslim population in number, ethnic diversity, and social life.Chapters 3 and 4 describe the process and progress of building the primary community organizations -- mosques and Islamic schools.Chapter 3 traces changes in the evolution of mosque communities since the early decades of the twentieth century, but focuses on the institutional elements of mosque life and what it means to the community as a whole.Chapter 4 outlines the variety of educational options for Muslims in North America and focuses on the movement to build private religious schools.Chapter 5 examines the contributions of major national groups that have worked to organize and shape the character of local religious communities.Chapter 6 outlines the various ethnic associations that have been organized (largely outside the mosque communities) on the basis of affinity to ethnic and national origin attachments.Chapter 7 sheds light on the efforts of Muslims to build organizations that offer charitable assistance to the needy worldwide...Efforts to establish service programs targeting refugees, uninsured patients, and women are highlighted.Chapter 8 examines ethnic and religious community media.Chapter 9 discusses public affairs agencies that work to represent their members in the public square....Chapter 10 sheds light on Muslim community think tanks -- the efforts they make to analyze Muslim issues, and the guidance they have offered in rationalizing grassroots approaches to interfaith dialogue and public advocacy."A third of this book, or 150 pages, details the 'Directory of Organizations' that lists the addresses and telephone numbers of: Islamic schools, mosques and Islamic centers, magazines, social-service charity groups [and which Islamic organizations they support overseas], student groups, guilds, public-affairs organizations, religious-education programs, radio/TV stations, prison outreach programs, halal food services, Islamic legal services, coordination councils, education consultants, cemeteries, ethnic associations, and other Muslim organizations that are located in each U.S. state and province in Canada. About the first 15 pages present a well-written, straight-forward introduction to the basic Islamic beliefs. The book's title really says it all. ... Read more
