2-0 out of 5 stars The title was great. The rest is just okay.
If you do not have Fiske or Barron's, then get this book. If you get those books or the US News version of the same, forget about this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Anyone Thinking About Attending College
I own this book and I also had the honor of attending a lecture Donald Asher gave in Chicago. This book is for all of students out there who are un-conventional... perfect also for the ones out there who are thinking about going to a non-ivy league school.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not your average college guide
I knew I had to find a cool college or I'd die of boredom.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...
Overall, this book is one of the better college guides out there - it's well-organized, clean, and very useful for students, parents, and teachers alike, and it's easy to read, and does elicit laughter and chuckles.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INVALUABLE TOOL FOR WHOSE WHO IN WASHINGTON!
My 1996 edition is so dog-eared, highlighted, and noted that you can tell it's one of my most common reference tools.I use it when politicians are on talk shows, to give me an idea of where they are coming from. It usuallyproves there is a huge media imbalance of views on network television, soI've switched to C-Span. Seeing a voting record clues me in on where aCongressman is likely to stand on an issue, before he opens his mouth. Iuse it for background information, and to send faxes and letters.I use itto keep track of my own Congressmen and to find others who have voted theway I would vote, to contact, if an important issue is pending for a vote. It's only big handicap is a lack of E-Mail addresses.I could do much morewith it, if I had them.I highly recommend this book and am saving for anupdated version.

I explored the guide at a friend's house and was astounded by the number of references available to anyone who wants to know all there is to know. I work at a newspaper, take foreign language classes and am interested in fine arts.... Just to read the titles of websites is fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars for general purpose online research
Ignore "Complete" in the title. No book can hope to match the breadth of the Web. But Schlein does a commendable job in succinctly describing several hundred websites. The value in this book is in his selection. The websites typically have reliable content and lots of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars She Knows How to Evaluate Schools
You simply don't have time to go around to all the schools your kid might be planning to attend. And if you did, it isn't ckear that you'd know just what questions to ask. Clara Hemphill does know. As the director of Insideschools.org she has spent years analyzing the public school system in NYC. She looks at the schools academically (of course) but also in other aspects such as friendliness, willingness of the teaching staff to work with the kids individually, social development and many more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The stuff that dreams were made of...
In the brief introduction to this book the editor states, "If there ever was a "Golden Age" of Western Civilization this was surely it. In the following pages one can see both the reflection of yesterday and the seeds of the future, for few things in our culture are able to capture the sense of the times as are the trivial artifacts we give to our children to play with." Well, these were the playthings that the richest nation in human history gave to its children in the Golden Age between 1951 and 1969. The entire world offered their finest toys to America- but none were finer than those made by our own manufacturers (Marx, Ideal, Mattel, Remco, Kenner, Lionel, Gilbert...)
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful But a Bit Pricey
The Big Toy Box at Sears is a compilation from the awesome Sears Wishbook catalogs of the 1950's and 60's covering boys toys.It is one heckuva a trip down memory lane with cap guns, foto-electric football, GI Joe, slot cars and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for tobacco card enthuiasts!!
This comprehensive and superbly organized work is richly supplemented with numerous color and B/W photographs.A brief and informative history about various tobacco products/inserts and manufactures is provided. The book is organized principally into two units:N-series for 19th century cards (N1-N694) and T-series for 20th century cards (T1-T177).Each entry includes a brief description of the set and card appearance (front and back). The overwhelming majority of entries include an actual size photograph of a representative card (front and back) and a list of all cards in the set.Comments pertaining to card variations and prices are useful. The edge of each page is labeled with the set number to aid with rapid location of descriptions and card images. The work is peppered throughout with short vignettes and essays (published previously in various trade journals) by Dr. Terry Mitchell about specific sets or card themes.Although this is a soft cover book, the pages are printed on high grade gloss stock paper that tolerates repeated handling.Suprisingly, the book is neither overwhelming or boorish in its presentation. The brief descriptions and inclusion of images for virtually every set are effective strategies and make the book exceptionally user-friendly.No other work to date has done such a masterful job at capturing the variety of subjects, visual appeal, and historical allure of tobacco cards. This book is a must-have item for novice collectors and enthusiasts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully done; Notcomplete for all collectors
A beautifully executed publication, however as a collector of Victorian Trade Cards, I was greatly dissapointed NOT to find ANY of the cards in my collection listed.I would have expected at least ONE to have beenreferred to, but the items in the book are mostly geared to the collectorof tobacco insert cards. If this is your thing, this is your book.Forgetit if you are more geared to Tradecard collecting

3-0 out of 5 stars Big and Beautiful
This book is the companion to a multi-year exhibition of (mostly) paintings at Davis Museum at Wellesley College. Most of the works are from the Renaissance, with a smattering of Medieval images and some recent. There are a series of essays included, most of which will not be electrifying to any beginning bible studies student. In fact, the lack of biblical scholarship in the discussion of Mary is quite startling.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, assessible, and rich
I truly enjoyed this tour through Wellesley's collection of Marian art.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
For me the real beauty of this book was not the illustrated catalogue of images in the Wellesley College collection, it was the excellent essay by Melissa Katz.Robert Orsi's essay was superb as usual, but rather short, and the other essays are so short (2 pages each) as to be almost unmentionable.Katz on the other hand takes her readers on a historical tour of Marian imagery that is also thematically related to the hours of her devotion. In this way, her essay is not only an overview of Marian imagery, but it is also an overview of the history of the Roman Catholic church, an overview of Marian devotional practices, and the social forces in Europe which shaped these two phenomena. My only criticism of her essay, which might be more accurately a criticism of the Wellesley College collection, is that there is very little information on Marian imagery and devotion outside of Europe. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Transformational College Experiences
Loren's book is a fantastic review of what lies beyond the Ivy League. As a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, I utilized my education to author The Interview Survival Kit and I have nothing but praise for what my undergrad and graduate experiences provided me.However, college applicants should know that finding the right college is about much more than finding the right "name" - many schools will provide students with powerful, transformational experiences that encourage personal, academic and professional growth.A fantastic book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing much changes
As an independent college consultant, I am always looking for books that I can recommend. This is certainly a good source for identifying some good colleges that may not come to the attention of those obsessed with college rankings. My only qualm is there is almost nothing new in the text from earlier editions. For example, look at the write up for the first college listed, Allegheny College, and you will see little that has changed from the 1996 edition. Yes, there are a few more buildings on campus, but not much else is new. Even the quote attributed to chemistry professor, Ed Walsh, hasn't changed. If considering this book, go to a used book store and pick one up for 50 cents. Why pay for a new copy when most of the material is 10 years old!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loren Pope was Right!!!
After a personal large university experience back in the 60's, I knew that that was not what I wanted for my children. We found Mr. Pope's book and the lights came on.Not only did we use the book, but with some diligent work were able to arrange personal counseling sessions with Mr. Pope for both my son and daughter.
