5-0 out of 5 stars Classic book that hasn't sold millions of copies over the years for nothing!
While I don't think "What Color is Your Parachute" is a perfect book, it is certainly an excellent starting point for anyone embarking on a career path. As a professional coach, I find that is particularly well-suited to young people starting out and older people making career transitions.
1-0 out of 5 stars Starts good, crashes in the end.
Don't buy this book.I'll summarize it for you.Don't just send out resumes, go and talk to people at the organization you want to work for.Happiness is more important than money. This book gets really preachy, religious, and cheezy in the second half.It has no place in a career book and is in very bad taste. Some quotes from the book, "Your first mission here on Earth is ...to seek to stand hour by hour in the conscious presence of God, the One from whom your Mission is derived.""Your second Mission here on Earth is .. to do what you can, moment by moment, day by day, step by step, to make this world a better place, following the leading and guidance of God's Spirit within you and around you."Save your money, just watch televangelists on TV if you want your life controlled by God.

2-0 out of 5 stars Annoying at best...
I had to buy this book for class and I tried to give it a shot and read it, but it was really annoying.A lot of what we needed to find a job, was discussed in my portfolio class and was common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read Soon, Before Your Crisis Arrives
Well Worth Reading! You've likely heard it said that the first step to solving a problem is recognition. During, and since, my reading of "The Impending Crisis: Too Many Jobs, Too Few People " I've been speaking with business people who confirm all I've learned from this informative "MUST READ".Fortunately, now I not only recognize the problem, I also see practical steps that employers can take to position themselves to make it through the current and increasingly turbulent, employee shortages. I've found the research based evidence in this book to be presented in a way that not only speaks to CEOs and their direct reports, but also to every person, in any organization, that is planning to remain competitive in local, national or global markets. The real issues that affect employees decisions to either remain with or leave (and in some cases, even flee from) their current employers, are well addressed with an insightful understanding of the needs of all stakeholders involved in any business venture, including the customer. Since reading this book, I find myself looking at businesses differently; I now closely observe employees that serve me as a customer and many times I can see and hear the lack of commitment they have to their current employment. On the occasions that I am treated well as a customer, invariably, I find, through conversation, that this person likes where they work and is not being driven away by any of the 5 reasons most employees seek other employment. The last of which, by the way, is the amount they're paid. I recommend this book to any and everyone that is in business or a part of the workforce, but especially to those organizations that want to avoid being left without quality skilled employees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wrong But That's A Good Thing
As consultants very often do, this author has relied on statistics and the outside-the-picture view consultants inevitably have, and has come to the wrong conclusion. I think he's wrong about the nature of the impending crisis because he is basing his theory on the assumption that baby boomers are going to retire in large numbers. Most baby boomers I know are never going to retire because they can't afford to. They are supporting kids in college, elderly parents and a lifestyle that they refuse to give up unless they are forced to by becoming one of the increasing number of 55+ people who are being laid off so employers can avoid paying their benefits. These laid off people are not finding jobs at all or if they are lucky enough to find jobs they are jobs that pay far less than the ones they had. Many employers are reducing or cutting off medical benefits for retired people and medical costs are so high people are having to get whatever kind of job then can to pay them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thwarting Impending Crisis
Herman and Gioia early on identified a critical problem the workforce is facing: a labor shortage. With downsizing and growth in new sectors comes the inevitable problem of a labor force that is not able to meet thecurrent demands.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW Eye opening
After taking a detailed teleclass on interview training from an outplacement coach /resume writer (http://www.callfranklyspeaking.com), she recommended some further reading to make me an expert. I found this book to be really perfect after what I had learned. Straight and to the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good insight on how interviews go - step-by-step
I've had good interviews before, but since it's 4 years since I did my last job search, I decided to get some good insight on the subject.

I think the CD included with this book is a marvelous tool for the facilitator. The powerpoint and overhead slide presentations on the CD give you training programs for two days, one day, half day or one hour. The book itself walks you through step by step on how to design an effective training program. This is simple enough to follow for even the novice trainer, yet it is comprehensive enough to meet a seasoned trainers needs. I plan on incorporating many of the learning activities in our training program. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The star is for the digital version, and Amazon customer service!
Beware: If you buy the digital version from Amazon, it forces you to use Microsoft identity, and you will not be able to download the file then load it in your reader... No, you must open up a security hole in your firewall to make the pre-file send encrypted information to God knows where, then you can only read it on that identity. It is Microsoft bound so I don't know if you Mac guys or Linux guys are covered here, on PDA side, forget PDA that is not the right terminology, Pocket PC it should say.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Practical and Relevant
OK let's get it out there... people who have very little to live for read business books. 99% of the stuff written is of the most egregious quality known to mankind -- people with any sense avoid the business section in any bookstore. It is the special writer indeed that can make their experiences relevant to the rest of us, impart knowledge and wisdom, who goes beyond the pump-me-up-and-let's-all-feel-good-and-happy-clappy version of corporate America -- the kind commonly encouraged in some national sales conventions. You know! The type that tries to convince you they have secrets of business success by regaling you with stories on how important their "new" business discoveries really are, when really they are variations on the benefits such banal things as getting up early, not watching too much TV, changing your socks, and giving people hell the occassional time (preferably all of the above done based upon some abstruse mathematical formulation).
5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!
Lou Adler, president of the Power Hiring consulting and training company, provides a systematic approach for finding, interviewing and hiring the best candidate for a job. He emphasizes making an objective assessment and, to this end, he provides techniques for overcoming first impressions. He identifies four key interview questions you can use to determine job candidates' competency and motivation, and to match their skills and interests to your company's needs. The book includes charts and checklists that highlight important points. We recommend this well-organized guide to effective hiring to company owners, human resource personnel and managers involved in the hiring process. Alert job seekers may also find it useful to learn what a good interview will demand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!
I bought this after working for the federal government for 20 years!I was looking for a position after the agency I work for within the Department of Defense was BRAC'd.I needed some serious help in the KSA writing department. This book helped me tremendously.I breezed through the KSAs after reading what government managers are looking for in an applicant's KSA.Well worth the money.Oh, and I did get the job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Federal Resume Guidebook
I have this book as well as Ten Steps to a Federal Job.What a lifesaver.Who knew all the detail needed to get a federal job! These books are easy to digest, easy to follow, then they become a resource that I have used repeatedly. These books will take the fear out of the application process. In addition, a time saver is the "free" access to templates to help build the necessary documents. I used the template, and had a problem (turned out to be AOL as the problem). At 8am I wrote an email using the "contact us" tab on the web site the templates are located on.With-in fifteen minutes, the author herself (Kathryn K. Troutman) emailed me back and stayed with me until the issue was resolved.A short time later a technical support person contacted me by phone to make sure things were resolved. If that was not lightning fast, I do not know what is.A person whom I did not know recommended these books to me, now I am telling everyone I know (and don't know) about them!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Book!
This book is wonderful! Whenever I have a very specific question, I can always pick this book up and refer to exactly what I need. With a federal resume, the devil is in the details, and this book can help negotiate over some of the pitfalls. Thanks! Laura, Apex Resumes,www.apexresumes.com ... Read more

This book is literally full of errors and inaccuracies. While it has helped me refresh my memory a bit, one really has to be careful and critical to avoid learning wrong answers! Sometimes the given answer is even exactly the opposite of the correct answer. Some examples:

3-0 out of 5 stars What's with all the Hype?
I just got layed off. I'm confused about what career I should get on with as I wasn't happy at my old job anyway. I'm thinking about trying to make money with my website with some of the knowledge I have in investment. That's what I knew before reading this book, and that's still what I know after having read it. Am I suppose to have found myself in the ultimate dream job now? This book is not that life-changing if you ask me.

I bought this book, and "Radical Careering: 101 Truths to jumpstart your Job..." so I could get some inspiration to potentially switch careers.By far, this was the better and an excellent book. This book provides a comprehensive series of exercises to capture the essence of 'What do I want to do with my life - careerwise?' Julie Jensen sincerley takes you on a journey inward to rediscover who you are and why you are what you are-- all so you can have a great career match.

This is wonderful book explaining what etiquette is really about. One will learn everything -- from how to dress, table manners, office setup, how to print business cards to how to prepare resume.I would recommend to everyone to read it regardless if they are working or not. While I do not agree with some of the rules regarding "who pays for lunch" - I would say that this is a book everyone should read and understand because it will improve their interactions with others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short and rather expensive, but a timesaving and valuable resource
I do a fair amount of career counseling, especially in the area of career transitions. What I have found is that most people neglect to do the introspective work that is necessary to really get down to their deepest passion around vocation. This little book, helps you to do exactly that and provides a structure to do it quickly.
3-0 out of 5 stars not bad, not great
Well, if you have the book itself. There is not much new information. This is a good idea for a class, but I would not recommend it if you are buying it on you own.On the other hand, there some cool stuff in it, but I don't think it is worth the price.

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of fluff
Much of this book is fluff. He spends a lot of ink on things a reasonable person would never say or do at an interview. Also, many of his "serious" question seem ill advised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Practical
I was waiting in line at the college bookstore, (buying a textbook), and this book was prominently featured.I thumbed through and was impressed at the straightforwardness of the questions. Making a list from these questions will, no doubt, give the impression on an interview, that you are focused, serious and organized. A worthwhile investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have in your job market arsenal
This book was recommended to me by several people as I interviewed hiring managers, HR personnel, senior-level employees, and others for my own book on the job market.By all accounts, my own included, 201 Best Questions is comprehensive, helpful, and tactical, an important read when one is preparing for an interview. It is not an all-inclusive resource, only interview-targeted, but for what it is, the book is top-notch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
I've been a career counselor for almost 30 years.I'm always searching for solid books to recommend to clients.I liked this one, as it offered a refreshing spin on a topic that has been written about endlessly.I particularly like the idea of Commitment, which is not stated as clearly in many of the other materials I have read and utilized. When I've exhausted the typical assessments I use with my clients and find some clients who are stuck, this is one of the books I suggest they use to move ahead.
5-0 out of 5 stars You're worth the work...
A great book, reasonably priced and filled with thought provoking exercises that really help you dig deep to find what it is you really love to do.I've recommended this book to several friends and they have all commented on how pleased they were with the book and the results they achieved by "doing the work".

2-0 out of 5 stars Is there Something I'm not Getting?
Basically what you are asked to do in this book is generate dozens of lists on your own and that this process will somehow create an epiphany of your ideal career. In the beginning, I forced myself to be open-minded about this process, but found that writing interminable lists, which did nothing to clarify what was already floating in my head, did not lead to a career decision. I suppose that this process is supposed to spark ideas and new insights - it didn't. All the stuff that I wrote down was information I already knew quite intuitively and seemed obvious (e.g., I want a job where I get along with co-workers). What I needed was something structured and concrete that would point me to certain careers, which this book really doesn't do. ... Read more

Looking to live somewhere where houses are cheap? Head to Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Iowa, where the average home costs $75,700, and annual property taxes for that home are about $960. Perhaps a good job market is a higher priority. In that case, pick Phoenix, Arizona; Las Vegas, Nevada; or Riverside, California, as they top the list of places projected to have the highest-percentage increase in new jobs by 2005. Most of those jobs, by the way, are expected to have above-average pay. This and other detailed information can be found in the sixth edition of Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A city may be "great on paper" but beware!
These books are full of extremely helpful information, but I warn my fellow readers to take a place's culture into account before making a life-changing move. The books will not help you here. My husband and I bought a previous edition of Places Rated and devoured it while looking for a place to relocate from Los Angeles. We settled on a southern capital that seemed to have everything going for it, including consistently high rankings in Places Rated and every other city ranking we could find. Unfortunately, a city that looks great on paper may not be the place for you. Despite having lived in several states, we were unprepared for the surprising difficulties we experienced as "yankees" living in the south. From petty social and work discrimination to routinely being screwed over by one business after another hired to work on our home or car, etc., it became evident that we were identified as "yankees" on sight and treated accordingly. So much for southern hospitality! I assure you that we did our best to fit in and make friends, as we have successfully done in every other region of the country. After 2-1/2 years of this, we sold our home for a loss and got our "unsweet tea" out of there. Perhaps we were naive, not realizing that the yankee business is still such a potent issue in the south, but we will make future relocation choices with this experience in mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book of its kind.
It's tough to read a book of someone's opinions on where to live as its really a heartfelt decision each person needs to make for themselves. But most of this book is straight statistics, such as weather and crime. The book is big and leaves enough room for each metro area so you can read the climate graphs without too much eyestrain. It's the best book on deciding where to move that I found. I took tons of notes from this book, and it actually helped me pick an entirely new place to live than the ones I had originally thought of! The only section I didn't like was the arts and culture section. I'm into the artsy scene, but the authors rated cities based on number of symphonies and orchestras and operas - who goes to these anymore??

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
This book is just great.I have bought every retirement-places-rated type of book that I can get my hands on and this author is by far the best. The millennium edition is twice as big as the last edition and every subject is covered that anyone would want to know about an area; cost of living, transportation, jobs, education, climate, crime, the arts, health care, recreation.I can't wait for the next edition to come out! We're not retiring any time soon so it's helpful to really be able to study and evaluate where we are going to want to retire. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Very good, practical, useable book on turning an average resume into a standout.

2-0 out of 5 stars GeneralInformation
The information provided was general, however the samples will provide a first time resume writer with the basic outline to follow. The information in some samples, such as a housewife entering back into the work force, were a bit too hyped up to take seriously.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time and money on this one
If you absolutely have no idea what "finance" is, you might want to check out this book at your local friendly public library.Otherwise, check out other finance career guides. This book is a waste of time and much of the stuff is either inaccurate or not useful at all.I know because I sit on the other side of the table at finance interviews: I'm a seasoned interviewer.(In fact I'm better at recruiting at doing my real job... Sigh.)Let me tell you this: yes, I (and my fellow Wall Street interviewers) will ask some of the basic questions you'll see in this book, but we are lookign for honest, personal answers, not canned ones. Also, we look for *common sense*.Trust me, all successful candidates demonstrate common sense, and also each person's uniqueness ("what makes you sparkle").Then, for the difficult questions you'll likely encounter, you won't find in this poorly written, poorly edited book. It'll likely confuse you.Instead, read the Wall Street Journal, read up on finance topics that interest you, and beef up your basic math skills if they are lacking at the moment.Again, we want smart people who can think, not someone who just fits into a formula.Of course, many people who do get finance jobs are formula kind of people, but do they get paid a lot?I bet not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Insufficient
While many of the examples presented often arise in interviews, a majority of those given are among the most basic and simplistic questions you might be asked. You need to be prepared to be hit with far more in-depth and probing questions during the interview process. If you have no idea what to expect, this book will get you started. But for most people considering a career in finance, it will provide little benefit.5-0 out of 5 stars An investment with a fast pay off
I am studying an MBA at IESEs Business School in Barcelona, and this book has been key to help me succeding in getting a Summer Internship in Investment Banking. It is clear, concise, and covers most of the issues asked in Finance interviews. It is a must read for anyone with real interest in Investment Banking and without previous experience in this industry ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like having your own interview consultant
Ms. Alexander provides a great source of help with her PharmRepSelect book and CDs. I read a couple of books on the subject and found the PharmRepSelect Interview Insight discs to be tremendously helpful. I combined several books in mymission of getting a job in this field. For under a hundred dollars, I feel that I got the best info available. It's like hiring an interview consultant; hours and hours of help. I listened to mock interviews and practiced my techniques. I learned how to phrase my answers more precisely and sound very professional, which was the key in doing well on my interviews. I recommend this unique package to everyone interviewing for a sales job. Five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold!!Keeps you in the game!Got me my Job!!
PharmRepSelect landed me the job of my dreams. PharmRepSelect is written by an expert in the field that actually knows how to communicate information that will keep you from giving up! The real reason PharmRepSelect is different and better then the other books on the same subject is that it gives Encouragement.Out of the other four books I read about getting one of these jobs, it was only PharmRepselect book and Interview Insight CDs that made me feel the most confident and motivated to achieve my goal. None of the other books I read had this effect. In a job market that is crowded and frustrating with masses of people applying and interviewing, its very easy to give up. This kept me in the game. Of course this book is loaded with inside information, the dos and don'ts, but the big difference is the encouragement factor. If you give up on the interview process, you won't get the job. I landed my job offer because I did not give up. PharmRepSelect explained the mechanics of how these managers choose candidates and how to overcome these obstacles. I credit PharmRepSelect book, audio book and Interview Insight audio CD for landing me a job I thought I would never get! I was able to look, sound and act like the perfect candidate. Now I have the perfect job. This book and CDs are gold.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money
This book was not what I expected at all. I thought the information was very general and there were far too many pages devoted to answering questions (where you fill in the blanks) and not enough real information provided by the author. ... Read more
