4-0 out of 5 stars Second career?
My daughter works with horses, makes very good money, but only works 20 hours a week. She was considering taking medical transcriptionist courses.I bought this book to give her a real taste of what the courses would be like. It would be a good additional career if she could work it around the horse training she loves and excels at.This book is perfect for anyone considering a medical transcriptionist career. I gives you a very clear idea what is involved in beginning transcription.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased.
This is the textbook I used in my Beginning Medical Transcription course and I found it to be very helpful.Audio cassette tapes were given out from the teacher with model operative, autopsy, H & P, cytology, and consultation reports that coincided with the lessons in the book. The terminology that was in each chapter was used frequently in the reports to assimilate the student with typing the words, as well as being able to hear it pronounced in different ways.It gave a background lesson in basic terminology, including suffixes and root words.I thought that this book helped me in great ways. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A real Godsend
This manual has everything you will ever need in terms of the written English language. It will answer any punctuation, comprehension, or letter writing question you will ever have, and much much more. I bought the book just to put on a shelf for later reference. In the first two weeks I have already used it four times. This book is a keeper for life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches Shorthand Like It Says NOT Stenotype Machine .. DOH!
I don't understand the person's complaint that it doesn't teach how to use a stenotype machine for a court reporter. It is for teaching shorthand which is still a valuable skill when you need it. Very few companies have stenotype machines or court reporters on staff and yet there are millions of meetings every day.

1-0 out of 5 stars Decent system, but poorly presented, overpriced
The Good:
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice system, acceptable book
The system itself seems to be a good one, and EasyScript Express an acceptably effective way to learn it.5-0 out of 5 stars It's been a blessing
I had a need for a "fast-to-paper" method of verbal communications. I have been using Easy Script for several months now, after having received and read your "EasyScript Express" book and applied the lessons and practice sessions therein. I started putting the concepts to good use immediately, and have found EasyScript to be a benefit to my work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an easy way to learn speedwriting!
I needed to be able to take dictation at 80 wpm, in a very short amount of time, to pass an exam to keep my job.Never having taken a shorthand course & not being able to find a place to learn shorthand, I cameacross this book.I was amazed at how easy it was - this book takes youstep by step through the process of learning the rules of speedwriting, aswell as giving you practice sessions to build up your speed. It's a skillthat you can use for more than taking dictation - just for writing yourselfquick notes. The book is simple to understand & gets right to thepoint - without it, I would have lost my job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy and practical guide to writing quickly & efficient
Very easy and practical guide to writing quickly & efficiently! I bought this book because I am tired of writing everything in longhand and I'm not a very fast typist. I am currently writing a book and am tired ofgetting hand cramps from so much writing. This book teaches a system ofwriting that is understandable & easy to learn. It has you write wordsthe way they sound, and leaves out most of the vowels. Example: i wl cu u n- kr. Translation: I will see you in the car. I have heard bad reviews onhow hard short hand is to learn because of all the symbols. Quickhand is alife saver! Buy the book. Even if you just use a few examples in writing itsaves a lot of time and space when transcribing your ideas to paper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best MT Book You Can Own
Except for texts such as Dorland's, Drug Indexes, etc., this is probably the best MT book you can get.It is not only a course in itself (it needs to be used in conjunction with the workbook of the same name) but is a useful reference for as long as you work in medical transcription.Withself discipline (you need that to work at home anyway) you can make thisbook substitute for just about any tech college or correspondence course inthe subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Before buying this book.
I wish I had known this book must be used with Delmar's Medical Transcription Handbook. I was under the impression that it would be more like HPI's Medical Transcription Workbook. I am studying for Part 2(practical)of the CMT exam and was hoping this would be helpful. This booktakes basic to a new level. One of the questions is "Describe thedifference between rewind and review, the fast forward and cue." If youare still interested, you need to be aware that the answers are notincluded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for newbies and oldies for honing skills.
This book is an excellent condensed resource book for basic generalized information specific to Medical Transcription. There are breakdowns of words, terminology, tests an exercises for skill building. It is basically a text book used apparently for Medical Transcription.I would recommend it highly for anyone going into this field or returning to it ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars No experience with shorthand? This book is not for you.
Due to a lack of shorthand classes in my area, I decided to buy this book and teach myself. I read the warnings that this book is not recommended for beginners, but I've taught myself many other skills in the past and figured learning shorthand would be challenging, but possible. When I received the book, I realized that the author assumes you've already read Basic Principles. There are no explanations for what shorthand is, how it originated, or which tools are needed to get started, and I was expecting to see at least a couple of pages covering these topics. I was also disappointed that there are no explanations for any of the material covered in the chapters and that there doesn't seem to be answers for any of the transcription exercises. I returned this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review for GREGG's Shorthand: Dictation and Transcription
This book is great and all, the only problem is, you have to make sure you know the words in shorthand already. This book doesn't waste any time and goes straight to the transcription, but that may not be so good for new users.Other than that, this book is great and really goes indepth with the way to transcipt your shorthand notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Gregg Shorthand
This book is VERY good for learning Gregg shorthand. It shows the forms clearly and has lists of brief forms. The sentences that are written in shorthand in the front of the book are written in English in the back for easy decoding. It explains shorthand very well, and is an all-around great book for learning to write in shorthand. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Saving Keystrokes
Very helpful if you are in medical transcription.I am not sure how this would work if you were in another field, but for med trans, it is well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found it very useful!
I bought this book about six months ago and have absolutely written all over it!When I saw that the only review on it was rather negative in tone, I was inspired to present my own opinion.I am a working medical transcriptionist and I have used Ms. Rolland's techniques since day one and continue to add more shortcuts to my expander list every day.It has shaved so much time off my transcriptions.I have written extensively in the "white space" as I took the shortcuts I already used and expanded them as she explains with her technique.Although it seems that it would have been lovely to have long lists of shortcuts provided, I agree with the author that providing already-assembled lists of shortcuts would have done very little good. Instead, Ms. Rolland teaches you a technique to develop your own list of shortcuts.I have used many shortcuts that she has suggested and typed them into my own lists, with any changes I deem necessary for the accounts that I actually type for.I have inherited from other transcriptionists their lists of shortcuts and have found them to be extremely non-helpful and in some ways even harmful. The author really wants you to use YOUR thought process in developing shortcuts that work for you, not for her. For example, I am extremely left-handed (my right hand is very weak and not very coordinated), so most of my shortcuts are weighted toward using the left hand: hx for hospital, sx for surgery, rx for prescription, dx for diagnosis, ds for diabetes, etc., etc., etc. But, when I talk to other people, they are shocked because they would never use that many x's.They hate trying to hit the x. Also, your own shortcuts -- that work with the way your brain thinks -- are much easier to remember.I have tried to remember other MTs shortcuts, and I can never think of them. For example, cmpy is cardiomyopathy for me, which really does not make a lot of sense, hoty is hypothyroidism (ditto), apth is adenopathy and so on.
1-0 out of 5 stars Rather Useless
Production medical transcriptionists, the tens of thousands of hard-working women and men who document your medical history, know that the key to making a living wage in this era of off-shoring, voice recognition, and EMR experiments, is the use of a word expander, software which converts 'tpcosob' to "The patient complains of shortness of breath."Yet most medical transcription schools and community colleges fail to teach students to use these valuable tools.Diana Rolland wants hers to be the textbook these schools will use when they wake up to the realities of 21st-century transcription.Unfortunately, the book is poorly written and provides little information that can't easily be found on the internet at http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/index.php or many other sites by googling 'medical transcription productivity' or 'medical transcription expanders.'One should also explore the web sites for the expanders themselves:Instant Text, Shorthand, and Stedman's SmarType being the ones most frequently used by working MTs.Once again the publisher, Stedman's, proves how out of touch it is with the needs of the working MT:This text could have been made marginally useful with the inclusion of a CD-ROM containing a complete, sensibly worked-out beginning glossary list (in each of the above 3 expander formats) incorporating all the standard sentence particles that comprise the bulk of the reports we transcribe, as well as names of diseases, drugs, and equipment, so that those new to expander use don't have to reinvent the wheel.Instead, white space abounds on the majority of the pages as the author has provided hundreds of blank lines so that the reader can work out her or his own short forms and expansions following the examples given.Trees are crying over the publication of this text; if you must buy it, please buy it used. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for transcriptionists
This book helped me increase my typing speed believe it or not! When the EasyScript system is used to help build your expansion list in a word-expander software program, it is invaluable.I had thousands ofabbreviations in my expansion list, but had a difficult time rememberingthem. Thanks to this book, I now have a system for creating expansions andremember more of them. This book should really be marketed towardstranscriptionists.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU ! ! !
The Easy Script course changed the way I take shorthand forever. I had gotten the Easy Script I course in the mail. I had read the manual and used the auto tutor tape. What I like about the Easy Script method is that ithas 5 basic rules that reinforce basic English. I concur with the ad insaying that it is easier to remember 5 basic rules to retain what is taughtthan to memorize 20 or 30 rules and not learn anything.Read more

This book is awesome for a couple of reasons.First and foremost, it's very comprehensive--containing grammar, spelling, medical transcription-specific info, frequently misused words & sound-alikes, lab values, and much more. This is my bible, even though it hasn't been updated for a while and is definitely due.I can't wait for the new version to come out!
