5-0 out of 5 stars Multi Media Public Speaking Training
'Audience Centered' seems to be an obvious off-shoot of the teaching styles, that have become hyper-popular over the last decade or two, that claim to be 'Student Centered'. Is it just a buzz word, or is there something in it? As another reviewer points out, Audience Centered public speaking dates back at least as far back as Aristotle.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sixth and Ever Better Edition
You can't say that the audience-centered concept used in this book was pioneered by them. After all, in the first paragraph the authors give credit to Aristotle for defining the elements of speechmaking as 'of speaker, subject and person addresed - it is the last one, the herer, that determines the speaker's end and object.'
4-0 out of 5 stars Good copy
I know that this is a teacher's edition but I presumed that because it was, it would have come with the DVD which is included in the student's addition. Other wise the book is exactly the same as the student's edition and was sealed as stated. Overall, I am pleased with the transaction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars balanced or biased?
How interesting that the reviewers comment on the presumed politics of the writer before looking at the quality of the text. More interesting still, that some see the text slanted to the right and others to the left. Well done, Lucas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speech
I trully enjoyed this book, even though I am not a fan of text books. It has helped me develop stronger speaking skills, and I am not very good at public speaking. It's not a how to book, its simply a guide which offers tips and ideas on how you should present various topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, Someone who can teach public speaking!
As a college instructor of oral communication for ten years, I complained bitterly about the poor selection of books for beginning students--until now. This is the single best book of its kind on the market, bar none.In all my years, I've never had students brag on a book like this one: easy to read, well-organized, thoughtful, practical, visually attractive, and substantive. My best compliment is that I can teach three times the material in half the time just by using this text--and people understand it!I can't brag enough on the author's work. This is phenomenal.ANYONE who wants to master the basics of public speaking should read this cover to cover. The principles and techniques Mr. Gregory describes are effective, powerful, and described in a simple way.BRAVO!I'll recommend this to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must own for anyone who wants to be successful
It's ain't rocket science, folks. As Earl says, "We are what we think about." It's so simple, yet so many people don't focus on the things that they can control. This CD is required listening for the people who want to take control of their attitudes and become the success that they say they want to be.

You can rarely go wrong if you follow this rule of thumb: If it's by Dale Carnegie, then it's going to be well worth reading. 'The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking' is no exception!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great public speaking concepts
Although Dales books are quite old the concepts he introduces remain tried and true. I have read another of dales books"How to win friends and influence people" And they are both fantastic. This book in particuliar i see as being of great value to anyone who has ever struggled with public speaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars What every woman should know!
I read about this book - actually, I consider it a textbook - when searching for tools on expanding my career. I usually wouldn't buy something like this, and instead look for similar information from free 'Net sources. But on a whim, I bought it, and am so glad I did. I'm not even halfway through and what I've learned already has helped me to speak and express myself in a way that gets people's attention, and has improved my professional image. One of the best tips, which comes early in the book, is catching myself using the "I think/like/don't like" phrase when I want to discuss facts. I do it, so I don't look like a know-it-all. Dr. Mindell, however, shows several ways to express facts without appearing as though I have all the answers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review by the Business Librarians of the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh
The lights go down. The speaker strides confidently towards the podium, pauses and makes eye contact with the audience. And from the very first moment you know, instinctively, that it's going to be an excellent presentation. An experience like this reinforces your desire to create your own unique aura of self-confidence. What can you do to make this happen?
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful
I bought this book at a womens' leadership conference a couple of years ago.I read it cover-to-cover and decided to try the skills covered when communicating in my office. My supervisors' opinions of me changed drastically - they began to view me as surly and defiant.I didn't think any of the verbage alternatives were rude, but in the organization where I was working, the higher-ups expected you to consider them omnipotent and not have an opinion of your own.Ultimately one should consider their audience and adjust their language accordingly. ... Unbelievable that no one taught me these principles years ago. This guy has been around a long time! Excellent, easy to read and incorporate.

3-0 out of 5 stars speaking like churchill
This is an excellent book for speakers os any level who wish to make small yet noticeable improvements to their speaking performance. Churchill and Lincoln both mastered the skills necessary to be great speakers. The greatest secret that I took from this book is the power of the ..... PAUSE. To stand in front of a group of people saying nothing , with poise and confidence , is a skill the truly seperates great speakers from the rest.
4-0 out of 5 stars worthwhile reading
Good book. Nevertheless the author could make it better by cutting off some of the quotes that here and there become excessive in number and extension. This is particularly true for the chapters "power wit", "power poetry" and "power line". They are tiresome -- even boring -- when prolonged beyond the necessary. This only proves that you can have too much a good thing. When it happens good becomes less good and enticing becomes exhausting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shame on Norton! Listen to MLK "I have a dream" while reading this book
The text they have in the first edition of this book for the "I have a dream" speech so deviates from the actual speech, it leads you to wonder two things: a) what kind of crappy editors are reviewing this stuff? and b) if the MLK speech is so screwed up, can you trust the text they provide of the older speeches that you cannot verify by listening to recordings?
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource
It is so difficult to do justice to a book about great speeches. By definition, the content should be good - even great, which is partly why this book is such a rich treasure. The other reason why Lend Me Your Ears is such a useful resource is the commentary provided by editor William Safire.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic work made up of classic works
Aside from the great speeches ( two hundred of them ) that constitute this volume and are its heart, there is also the informative introductory commentary of William Safire. This commentary serves not only as guide to each particular speech, but in general terms as a kind of extended essay on the art of speechmaking. And Safire makes it clear throughout that he views speechmaking as an art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very colorful and contains many helpful sidebars
Finally, a text that deals with the fear of public speaking by dedicating a whole chapter to it. It doesn't come naturally, or at least easily for most people, unless of course, you're in the business. The Osborns give a whole chapter to the "First Speech." Although I feel this team was a little short on speech preparation techiniques as far as conducting interviews, what was offered was good enough to set up a solid base of testimonies for informative speeches. And although they did well in the in in-depth lesson outlining, the Osborns could've devoted more space to the Power Point presentation. This is increasingly necessary to win over audiences. A good Power Point presentation is the epitome of competent public speaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners
I have been wanting to teach myself to sing for several years, since I can't afford voice lessons, and have tried several books on the subject. This one is by far the best. I first tried books by William Vennard and Richard Miller and found that they were meant for advanced students, not beginners. There are other books for beginners, but they aren't usually meant for classical singing, more for pop (and I find that the authors don't really seem to have much of an understanding of the human voice). I don't know how he does it, but Brown manages to make normally difficult concepts easy to understand. Part of that is because of the CD that comes with it. It helps give a better understanding of what he's trying to explain. I would highly recommend this book for anyone trying to learn how to sing classically.

5-0 out of 5 stars The plain truth about singing.
This book is glorious.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
Wow, I really like this book! As a voice teacher and vocal coach of popular music, students frequently come to me with damaged voices in need of repair. Reading Mr. Brown's stories, I knew I found an author who shared my dedication to healthy singing. Orin L. Brown's warm and direct writing style conveys his true passion for healthy vocal use and his desire to share his great knowledge with both vocalists and teachers. This book is filled with descriptive stories that tell the tales of Mr. Brown's experiences with, discoveries of and solutions for ailing vocal students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent And Thorough Text
The previous reviewer who has mentioned that this particular text is rather demeaning perhaps needs to re-examine his statement. He laments about the text being too simplistic and emphasizing too much on the basic values of communication. However this type of erroneous approach is the reason why these reviewers fail to communicate their ideas clearly- it is obvious that they themselves need to learn the art of communication better.
4-0 out of 5 stars Accompanying Website
I had to buy this book for a class I am taking. The accompanying CD-ROM and website are extremely helpful and make reviewing the information in the book more interesting. The crossword puzzles of the important terms are a fun twist on studying. The glossaries that can be printed out from the website to accompany the chapters make studying for a test a breeze.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dictating Sleep, Volumes and Volumes of It
Perhaps this book is considered, by some people, to be a college-level volume, but the simplification of the subject is of the most demeaning of sorts. It begins by teaching you the most basic of ideas, the communication process (entailing the meanings of words like context, participants, messages, channels, noise, feedback, and so on), drudges through some page-filler slush about why we should communicate, and finally, in chapter twelve, gets to a little something on public speaking - what I thought the book, considering its useage, was designed for. 5-0 out of 5 stars Our Most Important Subject
This is an excellent book for learning or renewing our knowledge of English Grammar. There is a conspiracy in this country to dumb down the attendees of public schools, and it began in the early part of the last century with some wealthy industrialists and government officials.Leaving Children behind began before Bush and he is a prime example of it. Let's all fight back by speaking English properly, as well as reading and writing excellently. This book is a good place to start! Then, on to Phonics!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Thank you!
As an English teacher this is a good one. I wanted to order 100 of them for the students at Santa Fe South (10th grade) in Oklahoma City, just to let them have something to remember me by. It's a great tool to use to plan fun lessons, but it is also just a good little reference book when you need it. I need it, I use it. It works.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars Persuasive advice for lawyers
In Legally Speaking, Mr. Dempsey has created an invaluable guide for lawyers, and I suspect non-lawyers, who need to make presentations to small or large groups. His observations about the art of persuasion are both amusing and insightful. As Dempsey makes clear, talking is not the same as presenting. His focus on "making your case" gets right to the heart of what lawyers do for their clients.Dempsey really wants you to win your audience over and tells you quite clearly how to achieve that goal.Dempsey's comprehensive approach (40 principles!), covers every aspect of lawyers' presentation skills, but still leaves you with one unanswered question: "Can you do a book for non-lawyers?"

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book!
Where was this book when I was in law school? This is an exceptional overview of not only the tools but also the techniques attorneys so desperately need to communicate clearly. Dempsey not only tells you what you need to know to communicate concisely and with clarity (something far too few attorneys do) but he gives you practical advice you can immediately implement to enhance your speaking skills, regardless of the amount of speaking you do, or where you do it. The writing is engaging, entertaining and highly informative. There are hundreds of ideas and examples for every attorney. This should be required reading in for every law student and lawyer regardless of how often they speak-we need to do a better job and this book shows us how. This is the essential guide, written by an attorney for attorneys. Buy it now!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book actually deserves 10 stars!
Legally Speaking is a book that is almost too good to be true. Its information for masterful presentations provides breadth, depth, and enormous practical application. What's more, it is easy to read. The book is an excellent resource for anyone who needs to be a more effective communicator. David Dempsey has done an excellent job of laying out his outline in the contents. It is very easy to quickly turn to the information that is most needed in a given moment. Read more
