2-0 out of 5 stars No experience with shorthand? This book is not for you.
Due to a lack of shorthand classes in my area, I decided to buy this book and teach myself. I read the warnings that this book is not recommended for beginners, but I've taught myself many other skills in the past and figured learning shorthand would be challenging, but possible. When I received the book, I realized that the author assumes you've already read Basic Principles. There are no explanations for what shorthand is, how it originated, or which tools are needed to get started, and I was expecting to see at least a couple of pages covering these topics. I was also disappointed that there are no explanations for any of the material covered in the chapters and that there doesn't seem to be answers for any of the transcription exercises. I returned this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review for GREGG's Shorthand: Dictation and Transcription
This book is great and all, the only problem is, you have to make sure you know the words in shorthand already. This book doesn't waste any time and goes straight to the transcription, but that may not be so good for new users.Other than that, this book is great and really goes indepth with the way to transcipt your shorthand notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Gregg Shorthand
This book is VERY good for learning Gregg shorthand. It shows the forms clearly and has lists of brief forms. The sentences that are written in shorthand in the front of the book are written in English in the back for easy decoding. It explains shorthand very well, and is an all-around great book for learning to write in shorthand. ... This book is well written (in easy-to-use segments) and it's loaded with really practical information. You'll get great advice that's truly useful - whether you have to speak at a meeting, present an award, give a eulogy, make a wedding toast, whatever. In particular, the section on 'handling tough questions' is worth its weight in gold (it's perfect for anyone facing a job interview!).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it promises, in an engaging style.
I read this book on assignment, and was surprised at how enjoyable it was.Gastil and Levine pull together experiences from across the country, all through the 20th Century, distilling them into clear lessons and practical advice. And they write well! While it could have been a dry tome of lists and statistics, instead they bring it alive with insight and lively writing.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book was great!
I just finished "The Deliberative Democracy Handbook" and recommend it as a welcome addition to interdisciplinary studies of researchers, policy-makers,students, and practitioners. In explaining the course of national deliberation and its history, Gastil and Levine present a well-argued history of civic engagement that includes transnational, grass-roots, and bureaucratic dialogues.Noting that the resurgence of deliberation in the 1990's might be short-lived, the authors present case studies of what has and hasn't worked,
1-0 out of 5 stars Puff pieces - a real disapointment
I ordered this book hoping that it would indeed be a handbook that would be appropriate for teaching college undergraduates about this exciting approach to problem-solving and capacity-building. With gathering dismay I leafed through the chapters, finding one after another to be merely a collection of breezy comments, written principally by the originator of one or another slightly varying technique, that uncritically promoted the value of that technique. The material appears plucked from a foundation grant proposal. Surprisingly, considering the deep familiarity of the authors with these techniques, the book contains little in the way of actual operational advice. Rather, most of the chapters are unsupported and grandious claims for the utility of each approach, presumably designed to entice the reader to sign a lucrative consulting contract with the author. Folks, this is why we have academic research - to avoid empty and meaningless self-promoting efforts like this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Business Presentations
While not in sales-ever, I have made more than 10,000 business presentations to groups outside the organization. The group size ranged from a few to many people. I have attended even more presentations than I have given. Overall, this is the best book on business presentations that I have read thus far and it is likely to be one of the best books on the subject when I have read even more books on the subject. Treatment of team presentations and video conferencing was very good. The discussion of hand outs to the audience is excellent. The review of all types of visual aids is very good. The author does a superb job reviewing the use of slides that is so overdone. Admonishment to keep jargon to a minimum is very correct.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Public speaking made easy.
For most people, public speaking isn't something that comes easy.Infact, most people dislike giving speeches (putting it mildly).I was oneof those people that didn't come easy for. But, after careful studying ofthe tips/techniques to give a good speech, ways to analyze your audience, and many other concepts, I was able to give successful speeches, with theconfidence that being well prepared provides. The topics in this book areeasy to understand and remember, explain nearly all of the issues importantfor a successful speech, and are arranged in a manner that allows thestudent to get more sophisticated as he/she progresses through the coursewithout presenting an information overload in the beginning and withoutholding all of the usefulinformation until the end.I think that thisbook is a valuable text not only for the student but for anyone that wouldlike to improve their public speaking skills. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Book
This book literally helped me revolutionize the way I do business as a religious leader.Because of the controversial nature of my ministry (I'm the founder of the largest religious organization touching the lives of gays, lesbians, bi and trans people in the world) I needed help especially in dealing with the press to get my message over. This book absolutely told me how I could speak to any issue and stay on target about the issues I have tried to explain to the American public. My hat's off to Ian Taylor and George Olds for the information that is contained between the two covers of their book.I highly recommend this book for anyone

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply. the best
I happened upon this book by chance whilst on a trip to Toronto. Media relations is part of my job as a local authority worker in UK, so I thought I'd buy it even though I questioned myself as to whether it could be 'translated' to this country. How wrong I was! Having come to terms with the jargon and the examples, it's become my bible - both for my own use and in training sessions for colleagues. If only it had been around when I was starting out! Thanks you, Ian and George, no-one who speaks to the media for a company, local authority or government department should be without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique, Thought-Provoking & Brilliant!

5-0 out of 5 stars stunningly effective
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I shall be indebted to that person the rest of my life.As a professional presenter I constantly need to review my delivery techniques and look for ways to add impact for my audience. This book turned out to be an amazing assest in that regard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improved speaking skills - not just for broadcasters
This book came highly recommended over the Voice & Speech Trainers Association list, Vastavox, so it seemed like a pretty good bet.1-0 out of 5 stars Tape/Recording Quality Horrible!!
The quality of the audio cassette I received was so bad I couldn't concentrate on the actual content.Ann moved back and forth from the microphone which, of course, increased and decreased the microphone's "pick up." In addition, it contained a countless number of popping "P"s.However, most annoying of all, the tape sounded as if it was recorded at the bottom of a large tin can -- the tape was very flat (mono). When paying forty dollars for a single cassette tape, I expect more than merely an amateur production; I expect and am entitled to a professional production.Very dissappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book that is Needed
Finally, a book that focuses on broadacst voice! Many reporters and prospective anchors have finished school with good writing skills, but they are not polished in vocal production or delivery.Utterback's book is a "must have" for journalism schools and news rooms throughout the country. If people are serious about getting into this profession, this book will be a resource for a lifetime.Whether it's proper breathing, script marking or delivery styles, Utterback's book enables journalists to master the skills of the craft. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Saving Keystrokes
Very helpful if you are in medical transcription.I am not sure how this would work if you were in another field, but for med trans, it is well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found it very useful!
I bought this book about six months ago and have absolutely written all over it!When I saw that the only review on it was rather negative in tone, I was inspired to present my own opinion.I am a working medical transcriptionist and I have used Ms. Rolland's techniques since day one and continue to add more shortcuts to my expander list every day.It has shaved so much time off my transcriptions.I have written extensively in the "white space" as I took the shortcuts I already used and expanded them as she explains with her technique.Although it seems that it would have been lovely to have long lists of shortcuts provided, I agree with the author that providing already-assembled lists of shortcuts would have done very little good. Instead, Ms. Rolland teaches you a technique to develop your own list of shortcuts.I have used many shortcuts that she has suggested and typed them into my own lists, with any changes I deem necessary for the accounts that I actually type for.I have inherited from other transcriptionists their lists of shortcuts and have found them to be extremely non-helpful and in some ways even harmful. The author really wants you to use YOUR thought process in developing shortcuts that work for you, not for her. For example, I am extremely left-handed (my right hand is very weak and not very coordinated), so most of my shortcuts are weighted toward using the left hand: hx for hospital, sx for surgery, rx for prescription, dx for diagnosis, ds for diabetes, etc., etc., etc. But, when I talk to other people, they are shocked because they would never use that many x's.They hate trying to hit the x. Also, your own shortcuts -- that work with the way your brain thinks -- are much easier to remember.I have tried to remember other MTs shortcuts, and I can never think of them. For example, cmpy is cardiomyopathy for me, which really does not make a lot of sense, hoty is hypothyroidism (ditto), apth is adenopathy and so on.
1-0 out of 5 stars Rather Useless
Production medical transcriptionists, the tens of thousands of hard-working women and men who document your medical history, know that the key to making a living wage in this era of off-shoring, voice recognition, and EMR experiments, is the use of a word expander, software which converts 'tpcosob' to "The patient complains of shortness of breath."Yet most medical transcription schools and community colleges fail to teach students to use these valuable tools.Diana Rolland wants hers to be the textbook these schools will use when they wake up to the realities of 21st-century transcription.Unfortunately, the book is poorly written and provides little information that can't easily be found on the internet at http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/index.php or many other sites by googling 'medical transcription productivity' or 'medical transcription expanders.'One should also explore the web sites for the expanders themselves:Instant Text, Shorthand, and Stedman's SmarType being the ones most frequently used by working MTs.Once again the publisher, Stedman's, proves how out of touch it is with the needs of the working MT:This text could have been made marginally useful with the inclusion of a CD-ROM containing a complete, sensibly worked-out beginning glossary list (in each of the above 3 expander formats) incorporating all the standard sentence particles that comprise the bulk of the reports we transcribe, as well as names of diseases, drugs, and equipment, so that those new to expander use don't have to reinvent the wheel.Instead, white space abounds on the majority of the pages as the author has provided hundreds of blank lines so that the reader can work out her or his own short forms and expansions following the examples given.Trees are crying over the publication of this text; if you must buy it, please buy it used. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Speech Book for Geeks !
There is no passion to write an excellent book here. It might be a good book for geeks.Perhaps Chapter 4 (Engaging Audience) is the reason that I am left with this feeling. That chapter is particularly shallow. Or may be because the author Jefff Slutsky uses the powerful phrase "street fighter" so banally. The book is often very superficial in its advise. Just one example at bottom of page 30. "Humor should be funny." The title of this books touts three objectives. Overcoming fear is one of them. It never gets around to fear in any meaningful way. It is an easy book to read but partly because it does not get intense about any subject. This is a good book if you are going to be talking to very conventional run of the mill crowds where you can be contrived and shallow because you are not going to develop into a great speaker. If you address high powered people this is not the book for you.Co-author Michael Aun won the Toastmasters International championship in 1978.I have listened to this speech several times and it is greatness.Just to be a finalist is a glory--ardently admired. To win is beyond my ability to extol sufficient respect. Their are many good points to this book but they are found in quiet little places and if you have read a number of books on speaking this book can be read to advantage.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK if you're promoting seminars...
This book seems to be more directed at those who wish to promote themselves through public speaking. For the rest of us who just want some good, straightforward information on how to become better at speaking infront of a large group, it falls short.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gets straight to the point with tips you can use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
This book is absolutely great. It's creative, easy to read, and even easier to employ in the classroom! It can be used with multiple grade levels- middle school, high school, and beyond.I found it inspiring and would recommend it anyone associated with the public speaking / oral comm. training field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good even for the ESL classroom.
I got this book to use in my ESL speech classes. With a few tweeks, I was able to apply the exercises in the book to Japanese students.Great new approach for the students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Tool.
Many of the things that a teacher is taught in school about what one should teach and how one should teach really aren't that useful once a teacher actually starts teaching. Not only that, but many beginning teachers struggling with teaching the things they want to teach in a way that excites students and causes them to want to learn.Speech classes at the secondary level are no different than classes anywhere else and public speaking/speech teachers struggle just as much as any othe teacher with how to make lesson practical and applicable in the classroom.

I love this book.I am a college speech instructor, and this book is a great adjunct to my college speech text. The students have to give a number of speeches that must be short, and Say it in Six gives excellent justification for the short and to the point speech. This book speaks to the real world of public speaking. There is a great idea about the short speech to save your job. This is very practical in the world of down sizing.I have this book on my recommended list of speech books to purchase, and from time to time I quote from it. I tell my students to seek out the experts when they give a talk even if they think they know much about their topic.I may know much about speech, but Ron Hoff is my expert.
5-0 out of 5 stars Save time, money and sanity through shorter meetings
Mr. Hoff make's the point that most meetings are a waste of time and they are a waste because people don't come to the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Novice
I just took a job where I need to know Word and Excel backward and forwards.I thought I knew Word before but quickly found out it could do a lot more than I'd ever dreamed and I needed a good reference.I choose these books (I puchased the companion Excel 2002 book also) for both the color diagrams, examples and clear, non-confusing way it is written. Even if you thought you knew Word 2002 it is worth the price of admission to see all the fabulous features you can utilize to make your document a work of art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing, Engaging and Well Researched
George Marsden's biography of Jonathan Edwards was so well written that I decided to read more of his stuff. This book on fundamentalism is a classic. Many scholars of Christian fundamentalism paint with too broad a brush, often lumping evangelicals into the fundy camp. Marsden avoids this mistake. He also acknowledges what many do not, that the fundamentalism of the post WWI era took on a much harsher and more separatistic tone.
5-0 out of 5 stars 1980 Edition Read
I have read the 1980 edition of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting background literature
I used this book to get insight in background of R.A. Torrey, and it helped wonderfully. Espescially for me as a European theologian, it helped to get insight in history and society of the States, especially concerning the relation between pre-millenianism and cultural atmosphere and impact on theology, especially on the question of the personhood of the Holy Spirit!
