4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary for any great speech
I had an important ceremony coming up and I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to wow the crowd. This book gave me enough good ideas to research, write, and deliver a great speech. I had three goals for my speech:Establish myself as a great speaker, make the audience understand that I had written a great speech, and bring the receipient to the point of tears.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Public Speaking Book for analytical & intense reader
In architecture schools considerable time is spent on materials for building. The potential of the materials determines what can be built and how it will look and feel. How is it that other public speaking books spend so little time on choosing the right word. Perlman spends a great deal of effort on teaching how to find and select the right word. He demonstrates how the right word for speaking is different than the right word for written communication. You can be a great writer without being a good speaker, but you can't be a great speaker without being a good writer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is worth its weight in gold!
Lilly and Dottie Walters have contributed volumes to the world of professional speaking. All of their books provide veteran and upcoming speakers alike with the resources, tips, and guidelines needed to be successful.Thisbook is another example of the quality and care the Walters provide in all aspects of their speaking enterprise.I found this book to be most helpful in planning and writing my public speaking presentations as well as in my daily lesson preparations as a secondary school teacher.Lilly Walters presents page after page of straight forward approaches to capturing and keeping any audiences attention as well as numerous methods of achieving and reinforcing the exact message you were aiming at delivering. This is a must have on every public speaker's and educator's book shelf. My name is Kelly Croy. You can learn more about me and how I use this excellent book by Lilly Walters on my website at www.kellycroy.com.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in details....bigtime!
This book (being returned to Amazon) has less information on the fine points of creating personal preferences than does theapplication's built in help menu. It assumes that every user had just come from the previous version of Word. Coming from Word 5.1a (Macintosh) I might as well have been arriving from Mars. The book lacks essential detailof each operation in which I was interested. A new user would do best to stay away from both this book and Word and opt for a simpler program.5-0 out of 5 stars MICROSOFT WORD 2000 (STEP BY STEP)
THIS IS THE BOOK FOR FIRST TIME OR BRUSH-UP USERS WHO WANT TO GET A LITTLEMORE SUBSTANCE OUT OF THEIR EFFORTS IN A REASONABLY SHORT TIME. A MEDIUMAMOUNT OF WORDINESS, CLEAR PRECISE PROCEDURAL GUIDING, AND CLEAR B&WSCREEN PRESENTATION. THOUGH COLOR WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTRA NICE.

4-0 out of 5 stars An MOUS Authorised Instructorfrom Nigeria

The tapes give good information, but the main speaker of the tapes contradicts what they say!Her voice is incredibly annoying and nasily sounding - I don't quite know how to describe it, but her voice has a very unattractive sound to it and almost sounds as if she has a lipse. However, everyone else featured in the tapes sound normal.I just find it odd that the main teacher's voice is so incredibly unattractive sounding. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Robin WIlliams sets the future archetype for technology training
I cannot say enough good things about this woman's writing. She breaks the normal rules of teaching by rote, instead helps to impart a holistic understanding of the pros and cons of the technology, and thus it becomes obvious how to use it to the best effect. I have taught seminars using her books as reference materials, and recommend that everyone should own this book who uses a computer. Most people today learn technology by rote, this does not give a person the understanding necessary to face different software versions, or even different challenges that pop up everyday in the workplace. Many books written on technology are only good as doorstops, as they perpetuate the step by step learning by rote crap. This book, very thin and unassuming in it's length, get's in a user's brain like yeast and expands to help them to be able to comprehend WHY things work the way they do. I hope she writes a lot more books, especially one for Windows users, like her Little Mac Book. She deserves to be famous, successful, and prosperous.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very outdated but still of some use for beginners
I did pick up one or two useful hints in this book. If you haven't managed to figure out for yourself that two spaces after a full stop (period) just looks plain stupid, then you will probably get a lot of utility from this book. As other reviewers have said - it is extremely short and light on content - you'll probably read the whole thing in an hour.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful but an extremely short book
Not counting the introduction and appendices, the content is less than 50 pages. There are excellent tips for making a document appear more attractive and some nice "before" and "after" images are provided. Some tips are obvious for proficient users, like use tabs instead of spaces for indenting. That was the case for me, and I found this book to be overpriced for what I got out of it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Speaker's Guidebook
An excellent text for novice public speakers.I've found it particularly helpful for students who are unfamiliar with public speaking. The tabs make it an easy reference guide to tailor a speech to your personal topic. For people who are experienced, or who have never given a public speech, there is invaulable information about audience analysis, presentation, and the basic construction of a good speech. This is the kind of text that public speakers will keep in their library as a personal reference guide to aid them in the construction of any speech. ... This product is inproperly titled. One would think they had purchased Linklater's effective book full of in-depth explanation of Standard IPA. But it only includes a meager cassette and 3-paged booklet. Don't waste your time or money. It's not worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Approach deserves 10 stars!!
I first became acquainted with Arthur Lessac's work in the 1970's when I was in Graduate School.Since then, his Approach to Voice and Body Training has been the mainstay of my professional and personal life. His new book (the third version) has been written in such a way that complements the older version, yet takes us on a training journey that is wholistically and organically fresh and new.I enjoy teaching from this book, and my students enjoy learning from it! 5-0 out of 5 stars Singers, pay attention to this one -
As a voice teacher for many years, I am always being complimented on my speaking voice.Arthur Lessac's book was not my speaking coach, my operatic training was - but the technique is the same.Lessac has done a masterful job explaining the "old" Italian, bel canto/good singing technique that's been around since the 1600's - but he's done it for the speaking voice. Singers need to use the same technique for both speaking and singing, and this is the best book I've found on speaking technique.5-0 out of 5 stars The alpha and omega in voice
This is everything anybody (actors, speakers and liars) will ever need to know about discovering, developing and using with confidence the voice as atool to communicate. Westerners especially, I believe, have trained andmaimed their voices to suit ideals (The average woman speaks about 6 toneshigher than her natural voice prescribes). This book, a trusted trainingmanual in many theatre and opera schools, teaches practically and withoutpretence, the real abilities of the voice. This is all one needs toacquire/rediscover, with practise, how the voice can be an (extemelyflexible) extension of oneself in a physical world. A wholistic adventurewhich necessarilly encompasses correct breathing and posture, which willeventually be effortless, simply because it is natural. From an actingperspective the Arthur Lessac voice system becomes a perfect partner to theStanislavskyan system of acting (associated with 'The Method' in USA). Thepractice of the Lessac system can easily be taught to a child and hasproven successful in overcoming a stutter. This probably because thelearner is made aware of the manoeuvre-ability of sound and how it iscreated, and not only on voice as a carrier of language. The book containsmany excercises, each making one discover and realise the immense power of(self-generated) sound. Living in Africa one often wonders at the vocalpowers of its people. Westerners can also feel at one with their truevoices. The Lessac system would be the first (and last) step on the routeto rediscovery. This is a popular book (I had two copies stolen from mewhen it was out of print) amongst performers and all those who believetheir bodies are instruments. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful book I've read on the subject!
I recently got back into the training field after a long absence and found that my skills were not only rusty, but perhaps had never been developed as much as they could have.I went searching for information and came across this book.It was the first of many books I purchased on the subject, and is by far the best.Other books had great detail on how to prepare a presentation, but were lacking on what it means to entertain and engage an audience. This book gives specific examples the types of things these speakers do to engage and entertain their audiences--and covers a wide range of styles, from Tony Robbins to Barbara DeAngelis, which I found especially useful because I can relate to some types more than others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Behind Every Great Speaker There's A Book!
I started speaking publicly when I was 16 but it wasn't until I purchased Success Secrets of The Motivational Superstars on March 18, 1997, that I increased my stakes as a speaker. This one book helped me develop a deeper appreciation and understanding for what speakers do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Above average, but that's not saying much for b-stat texts
I have taught MBA Stats using this book for 3 semesters.I have looked carefully at many others, and taught with some of them. Here are some thoughts about Keller/Warrack:
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to statistics
I found the book remarkably clear and instructive. It was the textbook for an MBA statistics course.Fortunately the book was much better than the teacher, so that by primarily ignoring the confused musings of the professor, and reading and working the exercises in the book, I was able to get an A in the class, and, more importantly, understand statistical principles and applications.I worked with the 6th edition.I now use the book as a reference for my work activities as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Bible
This book became my statistics bible. After never attending any statistics classes at the University, I was suddenly forced to work with multiple regressions at work. This book helped me understand all about statistics that I needed for my business purposes. The examples are very helpfull to understand what the tests actually do and how you can solve your own inference problems. I read the whole book in about 10 days (2 hours a day) at the beach and now work mainly with the overviews in the last chapters when I have a problem to solve at work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic- a great resource
Ultimately, what stays with an audience, is the content of your speech.Richard Dowis, a former journalist and retired senior vice president of Manning, Selvage, and Lee Public Relations provides information to help you effectively collect, organize and shape content into powerful speeches. He urges you to consider first the purpose of your speech, what you really want the audience to walk away with. Then, to fit your purpose into the format and time allotted. You must begin by researching your topic, clarifying your purpose, creating an outline and identifying a strong thesis, or unifying idea. When organizing your speech the most important consideration is that it must be logically organized. He identifies several organizational strategies you can use.For example, Chronological order, the "Big Bang" where a shocking thesis is presented up front, and Cause-and-effect which outlines the causes of a problem, describes its effect and suggests a solution. He also provides the following guidance on writing your speech:

This book is an absolute must have. I don't think I have run across a question in my transcription that the BOS wasn't able to answer. I'm new to the field and this book is ALWAYS by my side. :)It is definitely money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME (but for those who can already speak French)
This book/CD is AWESOME.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tune Up your French is useful, unique, and even amusing
I have taken about 9 years of French classes in the U.S. at the middle and highschool and the college level, including a semester abroad in Paris. Although I know a lot of grammar and vocabulary, I have still always felt limited in my conversational skills. My confidence in my ability to convey exactly the nuanced feeling and attitude I wanted was low. At the same time, ordinary French books seemed to give me a lot of the same knowledge I had already learned (grammar and vocabulary) and in the same old format. It was hard to articulate what I was looking for in terms of improving my confidence in speaking French. Tune Up your French was just what I was looking for. It covers the nuances of speaking French - the posture and mannerisms that go with the language, the cultural nuances of certain words, the repetition of certain words and expressions and their meaning to the French, the use of facial expressions and mannerisms to go with the language, and even French slang (which is so useful but rarely taught in French classes and books). For exampe, how do you say that someone is a jerk in French? How do you show disgust? What does it mean when someone raises their eyebrows? Also, the set-up of the book lends itself to practical learning - with pretests at the begining of each chapter and then a chance to practice what you've learned at the end. Lastly, it is impressively accesible to any reader with some French in their background and even pretty witty and amusing at times. You don't feel like you are reading a text book and yet you are learning. C'est formidable!

2-0 out of 5 stars so so, but i don`T reccomend it
i know alot of fr & i never said beurk 4 yuck ever. many books that offer slang/argot are wastes of money imo. the terms are dated! if you want to lean colloquial, spoken fr, 1) go to francophonie & listen/talk, or 2) use internet & chat w/ fr ppl, believe me they have terrible grammer and slang coming out their little ears. - how did you learn the language i'm using now? -by listening and repeating you say? - then do same with fr & you will learn w/o prob. "La livre une fois crit, c'est dj mort, mais la langue, lui, est bien vivant !" ... Read more
