5-0 out of 5 stars from a former SAT coach
I used to work as a professional SAT Reading coach, making big bucks; the key issue for most of my students was vocabulary. Rather, VOCABULARY. (The other is slowing down and thinking as--not after--they read.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Fastest way to Build your Vocabulary!
Easy, fast, effective and fun way to improve your vocabulary. It will be a good investment!

3-0 out of 5 stars Alphabetically sorted
The words have indeed been carefully selected. However, I believe there are more efficient ways to improve your vocabulary. Instead of organizing words by themes, they are listed alphabetically. This means that you have to select and rewrite them somewhere else. If you are as busy as I, select a book with themed "word-clusters". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It is fun
I was a bit disappointed at first - I listened to the other CD set before this one But, more I listened to it ,more interesting it became. Both voices are very seductive and full of subtle energy. I am not sure if the "guest speaker" are different or same guys, if they are same I have to admit they did a profound job. I loved the different accent and content of the story as well. I would really remember the words s well as the sentences from the speakers note.
5-0 out of 5 stars I may be in Love with Polly Segal
If you would like to increase your vocabulary, and be seduced at the same time, you really need to get this audio cassette collection. Now, don't get me wrong, this is not an overt seduction; it is just that I personally find Polly Segal's voice to be very attractive in a classy sort of way. If I were to name this program, I would call it WORD TITILLATION.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but a little annoying
It teaches you over 200 new words that you can listen and learn. The dialog in the tape can be very annoying. I wish that the tape contains more word and less useless dialog. If you take out all the annoying dialogs in the tape, it will make 5-stars tape :)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good presentation, good selection of words.
i found these tapes are decently good. they became like my buddies. i enjoy listening to them. most of the words are very useful in day to day life.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last! A Vocabulary Tape I Enjoyed!
This one's fun! Great vocabulary;entertaining stories with good acting; and the best format for reinforcing words I've heard so far. (I just ordered a copy for my niece and nephews.) Find out about the capricious, dilettante mechanic; what Appalachian Clem fears will be proscribed;whether the diamond cutter is venal... What a find! I'm as sanguine as thearcheologist in volume 1. Congratulations Audio Univ/Bantum AudioPublishing! You've bested Princeton Review (Word Smart), Peter Funk of Funkand Wagnall (Word Power), Paul Altman (600 Words You Need to Know) and allthe others I've listened to. My only concern is that buyers intendingto purchase another volume will erroneously select one of the other vocabtapes that begin with 'Word'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and didactic!
This instructional tape is entertaining and very instructive. The vocabulary words are used in short stories in which two actors are constantly explaining the meaning of words and using synonyms without losing fluidity of the story. Then the words are reviewed giving the listener a chance to recall the words after hearing them each in a sentence.Improves vocabulary and is very funny.I recommend this audio 99.99%.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great selection of Vocab for a short period of time!
This book contains crucial SAT vocab words, not too many words like some other books do, so you can really learn them in a short period of time. Also, for each words, it gives easy and clear definitions with part ofspeech and really good example sentences. Memorize all the words in thisbook, then you'll have a good background vocab for SAT verbal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars if you're a complete newbie, i recommed getting this fair-quality book, but just know its not great
ok, this is a good book. by studying from this, you'll develop a knowledge of basic hindi grammar backed by a couple hundred words. it is broken into 2 parts. the first 10 lessons is about speaking and the second last six is about writing. i'm now on lesson 9 of the first part and spending a little reviewing the previous lessons.
3-0 out of 5 stars Suitable For Whetting Your Curiosity And More
I purchased both the book and the audio CD, and so far I've read maybe 8 or so pages, but have played the CDs quite a bit as a companion to my daily commute. Bhatia is my first exposure to Hindi langauge instruction. So far the experience has been enjoyable, though a lot of Hindi letters sound alike to my tin ear.
5-0 out of 5 stars User-friendly intro to an extremely important world language
Bohut acche!Tej K. Bhatia's book is an outstanding, gentle, yet comprehensive introduction to the Hindi language for a beginner. It's difficult to cite the numerous reasons why this book is so valuable for the apprehensive beginning language-learner, but I'll make an attempt to summarize the high points:

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining
I learned a lot of words on my way to work and was very entertained as well. Some words are ones that you'll never use or find anywhere, but most were helpful to know. My only problem is that there isn't an easy way for you to understand how each word is spelled while listening to the tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations
Highly recommended for anyone wishing to expand their vocabulary and be entertained at the same time.Excellent investment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the time and money
I seriously disagree with the other customer commment. If that person took umbrage to the comments and banter in the "Genius" series then he or she probably finds most of the primetime comedy shows on thesedays totally unacceptable. The so called juvenille approach is obviouslyan intentional format used to help the reader/listener remember.I foundit quite effective and highly recommend the series.I found the formatwell thought out and a pleasure to listen to.It worked for me as did thetwo previous series. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Never Be at a Loss for Words Again!
Out of seven word power cassettes I bought, this audio book is the best. It starts off elementary level and quickly goes to collegiate level. I was astounded by the way the book is organized. The material is presented in such a way you WILL learn it. Since the words you use say a lot about who you are and where you're headed, I fully recommend this book!1-0 out of 5 stars elementary, boring, unorganized, not worth buying
Of all the vocabulary building audio cassettes that I bought, Kaplan WordPower is absolutely the worst. It not only is unorganized, but it alsoassumes that you have a junior high level education. The first 15 minute ofthis 60 minute cassette is wasted on a boring outline of the rest of thecassette material. I couldn't believe that I actually listened to theentire tape filled with crap such as "Do you know what prefix andsuffix are?" "Do you know good methods to memorizing newwords?" "Do you know that many words have multiplemeanings?" After 5 minutes listening to the tape, you will alsorealized that this cassette is 100% trash.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Education Value
These tapes are the most interesting educational tapes I have ever listened to.Mr Elster does much more than read from the dictionary. He gives you the correct pronunciation, correct usage, and the etymology of many of the words. The tapes are excellently produced and should be mandatory for all college freshman. If you want to open up a whole new world to yourself listen to these tapes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reading from dictionary
From their advertisement pitch ("a program that feeds words effortlessly into your memory... you'll be able to use hundreds of new words in hours..."), one would think that they'd used some cutting edge psychology techniques (such as NLP, conditioning, etc) to aid your learning. But you'll be disappointed when you discover that the author did little more than reading from the dictionary.4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good vocab learning
The author is very excited about his love of vocabulary and a person's vocabulary having an effect on their success. This helps to motivate you along with the host of new words you'll learn. The exercises are good but there could be more of them. Overall, its very informative and a worth the cost. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor audiobook
The first side of the tape tells the listener how important a good vocabulary is, how the brain continues learning as we age, what this tape is going to do for you, etc.The second side introduces you to about 15 words! That's about 75 cents/word, a very low return on investment with very little meat.A decent tape should cover 100 words.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well...
Consider "Word Smart II" from Princeton Review or "Verbal Advantage" if you want to learn new words.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too few words.
It's not for learning new words by listening to the tape. The primary purpose of this tape is not to introduce you to this tape. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful tape/book combo for learning vocabulary and phrases
I am using the tape in my car to learn vocabulary and find the pronunciacion clear, and definitely useful as Nepali sounds are different enough from English that it is difficult to know how to read a wordcorrectly.I like to learn many words, then phrases at the beginning of mystudy of a language, and this tape has been helpful, even in it's limitednature. 4 Stars because it is good - and accurate to it's title

3-0 out of 5 stars A useful supplement for learning Nepali
I put this tape in my car stereo and listened to it about 100 times before my trip. When I got to Nepal Ifound that I had developed an "ear" for the sound of the language (a Nepali native speakerreads the words)but was pretty weak in vocabualry and grammar.Asadvertised, the phrases are oriented towards trekking-- hiring porters, asking directions, buying supplies, things like that-- so it's not quitethe same vocabulary you need for social chit chat. However, inconjuntction with the vocabulary and grammar in the back of "NepalHandbook" by Kerry Moran, I had a good foundation for very basicconverstaions.Learning a little Nepali truly enhanced my trip since it made me stand out from the thousands of other tourists. I was glad I hadtaken the time to listen to this tapesince itdefinitelyhelped me beable topick up vocabulary faster once I was in Nepal, however, it's notquite sufficient to stand alone as the only source for learning thelanguage.

3-0 out of 5 stars A useful supplement for learning Nepali
I put the casette on my car stereo and listened to it about 100 times before my trip. When I got to Nepal, I had developed an "ear" for the sound of the language (the tape has a Nepali native speakerpronouncing the words) but not much vocabulary or grammar. The phrases inthis book are, as promised, oriented towards trekking (asking directions, hiring porters etc..) so they are not quite what you need for socialchit-chat.However, in conjunction with the vocabulary in the back of"The Nepal Handbook" by Kerry Moran, I had a good foundation forbasic communication.I spent six weeks in Nepal and learning a little bitof language really made the trip a whole lot more fun even though you couldget along fairly well there speaking only English. I was definitely gladthat I took the time to use this language tape since it helped me pick upthe language a lot faster once I got to Nepal, but don't expect it to standalone as your only source for learning Nepali language. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars WAY TOO SCARY VOCABULARY
SAT Vocabulary study on audio CD's! We can listen in the car! What a find! The packaging for "Not Too Scary Vocabulary (for the New SAT & Other Standardized Tests And Success in Life)" proclaims, "Outrageously Wild and Funny with Wacky Songs and Poems!" Also on the packaging, "Award Winning" - "Hilarious, Brilliant and Super Effective" - "The Way to Laugh your Way to Verbal Victory on SAT Day". Sounds great for those of us with children preparing for the PSAT/SAT tests who spend a lot of time in our cars! Also included is a positive review from "a mother of four ages 8-18" that includes "The whole family is laughing and learning". I happily plopped down the purchase price and popped the first CD in the car stereo. Imagine my chagrin when Creator/Performer Renee Mazer taught the very first word (abashed) with a poem that included "...would you be abashed, if your private parts got flashed, when your fly was unzipped, while your underwear was ripped?..." Well, my fifteen year old son was a little embarrassed, and I thought the poem was a little more tasteless than hilarious - but we continued on. On the third word (acrimonious) we were treated to the following: "...Their divorce was acrimonious so she took nude pictures of her flabby ex-husband and emailed them to everyone at his office. That would be a fun thing to do if you were going through an acrimonious divorce". Well, the alarm bells begin to sound but surely it couldn't get worse! Before leaving the A's we suffered through "artful" which Ms. Mazer teaches with a true story and poem about offering to date her college T.A. in exchange for an A, and "augment" which is taught with the concept of breast augmentation and a poem about a fictitious daughter posing nude for a magazine. We actually continued to listen until I discovered that she intended to use the word "condom" to teach "condone". That was the end of the road for my son! I emailed Renee Mazer with my concerns as she requests in a companion booklet in which she asks for "any comments about these CD's". Her response was that she feels the words outrageously wild on the packaging "state up front what the content was going to be like". She also states that "the product has gotten editor's choice awards from parenting/kids magazines, a review from a major media outlet calling it `g rated,' and countless fan mail from parents of young kids. It is also being used in public middle and high schools. Nothing in it is more risqué than what is on prime time TV, the radio and the covers of magazines that you see while checking out of a grocery store." No mother whom I know personally would want her teens to listen to this trash! In order to be fair to Ms. Mazer, I decided to listen to the entire 7 CD set (alone) and found it far more offensive than I had imagined! This product should come with a parental caution label, or, at the minimum, the words irreverent, racy or risqué on the packaging. Ms. Mazer uses those words to describe her product on her website and I would not have purchased it if I had found any of them on the box!
4-0 out of 5 stars Annoying but effective
I'm an SAT tutor and if you can stand to listen to Ms. Mazer's annoying voice and stories of her dating days, you will learn new words and her approach is effective. For some teenagers, Ms. Mazer is too much to listen to--my son refuses. However, I've listened to all her CD's and I've learned and remembered new words.I would suggest your borrow one CD from a friend and try it first before you buy it.Ms. Mazer's approach is more effective than Princeton Reviews Word Smart and Word Smart II if you can tolerate her.If you are a very conservative parent you probably won't like her stories but she doesn't say anything kids don't already hear in a public high school.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gutter trash.
Well, this would certainly expand your vocabulary.
