Bull Run
Bull Run- the first major battle of the Civil War. This book by Paul Fleischman describes that battle in the perspective of sixteen people. These people are very different from each other, all the way from northerners to southerners, from slaves to military leaders. Each point of view brings out a different purpose for the war, and gives a new meaning to controversy. All the people in the book are related to each other so much, but are very deeply divided. This book does describe the battle and events leading to the Battle of Bull Run, but has very little flow. It is not a very good book, and is not recommended as a source of reference.
Characters come alive!
Paul Fleischman has a unique way of intertwining characters and their perspectives of the Civil War.Great for classrooms and building presentations.This is a great way to teach summarizing by reading all of the vignettes for one character and summarizing their involvement with Bull Run.
Mondo monologues sans monotony
You can accuse Paul Fleischman of a lot of things.Laziness is not one of them.When I told the kids in the bookclub I run that we were going to be reading something called "Bull Run" by a Mr. Paul Fleischman, they were quick to inform me that they were already familiar with him."He's the guy who wrote, 'Joyful Noise'!", cried one delightedly.I agreed that this was indeed his best-known work but that, "Bull Run" was probably going to prove to be a little different from a poetry book of insect noises.This turned out to be a particularly foresighted statement when some concerned parents informed me that they were not comfortable with the violence of this book and would rather that their children not read it.I was caught a little unawares.I shouldn't have been.If you are one of those concerned parents, allow me to tell you that yes, there is violence in "Bull Run".Heck, you're not going to have a whole book about a single exceedingly bloody battle without some blood actually making it into the text.However, the battle violence is brief and the story a compelling one.If you've a kid just hankering for the glories of combat, this should snap them out of THAT little fantasy right quick.

WAY TOO SCARY VOCABULARY
SAT Vocabulary study on audio CD's! We can listen in the car! What a find! The packaging for "Not Too Scary Vocabulary (for the New SAT & Other Standardized Tests And Success in Life)" proclaims, "Outrageously Wild and Funny with Wacky Songs and Poems!" Also on the packaging, "Award Winning" - "Hilarious, Brilliant and Super Effective" - "The Way to Laugh your Way to Verbal Victory on SAT Day". Sounds great for those of us with children preparing for the PSAT/SAT tests who spend a lot of time in our cars! Also included is a positive review from "a mother of four ages 8-18" that includes "The whole family is laughing and learning". I happily plopped down the purchase price and popped the first CD in the car stereo. Imagine my chagrin when Creator/Performer Renee Mazer taught the very first word (abashed) with a poem that included "...would you be abashed, if your private parts got flashed, when your fly was unzipped, while your underwear was ripped?..." Well, my fifteen year old son was a little embarrassed, and I thought the poem was a little more tasteless than hilarious - but we continued on. On the third word (acrimonious) we were treated to the following: "...Their divorce was acrimonious so she took nude pictures of her flabby ex-husband and emailed them to everyone at his office. That would be a fun thing to do if you were going through an acrimonious divorce". Well, the alarm bells begin to sound but surely it couldn't get worse! Before leaving the A's we suffered through "artful" which Ms. Mazer teaches with a true story and poem about offering to date her college T.A. in exchange for an A, and "augment" which is taught with the concept of breast augmentation and a poem about a fictitious daughter posing nude for a magazine. We actually continued to listen until I discovered that she intended to use the word "condom" to teach "condone". That was the end of the road for my son! I emailed Renee Mazer with my concerns as she requests in a companion booklet in which she asks for "any comments about these CD's". Her response was that she feels the words outrageously wild on the packaging "state up front what the content was going to be like". She also states that "the product has gotten editor's choice awards from parenting/kids magazines, a review from a major media outlet calling it `g rated,' and countless fan mail from parents of young kids. It is also being used in public middle and high schools. Nothing in it is more risqué than what is on prime time TV, the radio and the covers of magazines that you see while checking out of a grocery store." No mother whom I know personally would want her teens to listen to this trash! In order to be fair to Ms. Mazer, I decided to listen to the entire 7 CD set (alone) and found it far more offensive than I had imagined! This product should come with a parental caution label, or, at the minimum, the words irreverent, racy or risqué on the packaging. Ms. Mazer uses those words to describe her product on her website and I would not have purchased it if I had found any of them on the box!
Annoying but effective
I'm an SAT tutor and if you can stand to listen to Ms. Mazer's annoying voice and stories of her dating days, you will learn new words and her approach is effective.For some teenagers, Ms. Mazer is too much to listen to--my son refuses.However, I've listened to all her CD's and I've learned and remembered new words.I would suggest your borrow one CD from a friend and try it first before you buy it.Ms. Mazer's approach is more effective than Princeton Reviews Word Smart and Word Smart II if you can tolerate her.If you are a very conservative parent you probably won't like her stories but she doesn't say anything kids don't already hear in a public high school.

Gutter trash.

Your ultimate communication guide!

Saved my life
Like anyone else who would be interested in a product like this, I had a fear of flying. I'm 27 and had avoided it all my life until I found out I would have to take not one, but FOUR flights. I already suffer from anxiety so I decided to try this product based on the reviews on here and on Itunes.
Not for Me
I didn't care for it but I only listend to it a couple of times.But whenver I did get the chance to listen I found it a bit annoying and not very relaxing.For me, it was a waste of money.

An excellent source of info for some people
"The Promise of Sleep" is theeminent Dr. Dement's magnum opus for the masses.It contains more information than most of us will ever want to know about sleep.It is a long and intricate book, and it reads like a grant proposal. Most of us will read the sections that apply to us, and will use the book as a reference.I didn't read the whole thing and neither did any of you. So if you plan to read the whole thing... you are dreaming.But I find myself returning to this book repeatedly, for various health-related reasons.Here I discuss the people I think will benefit from this book, and why.Then I discuss what I believe to be Dr. Dement's biases, for better or worse.Finally, I discuss some other books which you might consider in addition to, or instead of, this one.
It's a sleeper
4+ months after ordering this book in a fit of insomnia, I finally finished it.This thorough treatise covered so much that if often put me to sleep. The book contains a lot of great information if you can stay with it too the end.

Inspiring
I loved this tape and wonder whether the other reviewer listened to the same recording?!It is anything but slow or boring or simple.I have listened to this tape many times over the years and still learn something new at every sitting.Harriet Lerner is knowledgeable about a difficult topic - the nature of anger and how to handle it when it arises in us or in others.Not only does she provide an excellent insight into the psychology of anger but she does it in a down to earth way, without preaching or talking down to her listeners.It's more like chatting with a good friend.I found this tape inspirational (as I also found her other tapes, On Intimacy and On Mothers and Daughters, as well as two of her books, The Dance of Anger and The Dance of Intimacy - her other books are not as good as these two, but they are still worth a read, if you can borrow them.However, I'd certainly recommend buying your own copies of her two best books andher tapes, for future reference).

Verrrry Slooowwww...
This audio tape left me feeling like I just read a lengthy book jacket.Actually it was like listening to a seminar that was good, but 30 minutes too long. There was just enough meat in it to kindle my interest and show that the author/speaker does have some interesting insights but it dragged on and on so that by the end I felt I'd wasted 90 minutes that would have been better spent listening to an audiotape of a real book, not just a "presentation" on a topic.Read more

funny and easy to remember
I am a non-English speaker. I listened to this audiobook for my GRE. It helped a great deal because the tape is funny and vivid. I remember the words from this audiobook so well. It just made those GRE studying days so fun.

This is my favorite book!
I have been through Book One several times (I have both the book and the CD collection).More than any book I have ever read, this work provides answers to a multiplicity of difficult questions.I view myself as functioning at a higher level ever since first reading the series three years ago. I had an opportunity to ask Deepak Chopra, live on PBS, his opinion of this book; his answer: "Truly channeled directly from God!"The quality of the CD set is excellent.The choice of Ed Asner and Ellen Burstyn was inspired (Ellen never ceases to amaze).This set is a good investment since many people are likely to want to hear the entire book repeatedly!

This book has changed my outlook on life
This book answers many of the questions few people know the answer to after an entire lifetime of search and devotion to spiritual life.There is no doubt in my mind that the words spoken through Neal Donald Walsh are Truth.

A Contemplation About "Conversations."
This is a masterpiece in modern thinking! As I listened to this book I finally realized that I was not the only person who found the little faults in human thinking and behavior, organized religion and government. The philosophies put forth in this book reflect exactly the philosophies of thecommon person but with one difference...the common person can feel it andact upon it but Mr. Walsch puts it into words for the first time. I haverecommended this book time and time again to others and every time I getthe same response...I thought I was the only one! Lily Bart Never Understood The Rules Of The Game
The world that Edith Wharton felt comfortable with was the one that was located in the fashionably expensive upper east side of New York City of the mid 1870s. There were plenty of newly rich businessmen who had made fortunes after the Civil War, and the attitudes of "hit `em hard" that made money then worked pretty well later too. Such attitudes were often grounded in a smugness that said, "I got mine, and you didn't." In THE HOUSE OF MIRTH, Wharton examines several figures whose lives intersect at a junction that separates those who have money from those who don't.The losers in such a confrontation are not only the ones who wind up broke--they are simply the most obvious--but the so called winners are also losers in that Wharton shows them as losing their humanity even if they maintain their fortunes.
