We accidentally ordered this book not realizing it was a pocket edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Travelling Riverside Blues
This is my favorite transliteration of the Tibetan Book of the Dead.Trungpa Rinpoche and Francesca Fremantle bring scholarly precision, elegance, and a certain audacious directness to the text. The introduction and commentary are also first-rate.The pocket edition of the paperback is lovely airline reading, as it literally fits in your pocket.(Will having this book on your person put you on any "watch lists" when you get the super-size security treatment?Dunno.)
4-0 out of 5 stars The Tibetan Book of The Dead, read by Richard Gere
This was my first exposure to the Tibetan book of the Dead.Basically this book is aninstuctional guide for traveling thru the Bardo; the period or placein which we find ourselvesafter death, and beforeincarnating into our next life or form. The book gives a very detaileddescription of the deities and phenomena one can expect to encounter in theBardo, and the actions one must take to facilitatean optimal incarnation. It also instructs on the practices that we should engage in while living,to prepare for the Bardo, andtherefor have the best out come of thatexperience. In addition, this is a guide for facilitating and guidinganother person thru death and the Bardo. This is a straight forwardreading of the book by Gere, it is clear and easy to understand. He is easyto listen to. The descriptions of the variousdieties get a bit longwinded as he decribes at least a hundred of them. Some of it is gruesomeand down right scarey sounding. But the basic thing to remember is, thatit is all emenating from our own mind, and not to be overcome by fear.Exposure to this information, practice and meditation on these deities canhelp prepare us for this experience. Apparently, if we take the correctactions (or non actions) in the bardo, we may not have to continue insamsara but can go directly to the Buddha state, or at least an incarnationin one of the more pleasant realms.I am fairly new to Tibetan Buddhism,so my interpretations of what I heard may not be a perfect reflection ofthe actual teachings. But that is how I heard it. ... Read more

My desire to understand and commune withthe Great Spirit of the NativeAmericanWays satisfies my sacred spirit in everygood manner when Ed McGaaspeaks about Black Elk and the Vision.Joseph Campbell, the greatMythologist, called Black Elk's Vision the greatest example of imagery andspirituality. This inner locus of control to find our sacred spirit andcommune within GreatSpirit with all good people seems to methe essence ofour spiritual quest.During the last century, perhaps 1872, Black Elk had aNear Death Experience atage nine years. My NDE happened in 1945 at ageseven years. My NDE, and many others, will be presented in a new bookcalled "Children of the New Millenium" in early 1999 by PMHAtwater. The patterns of life that emerge in thelives of such childrenamazes me! 3-0 out of 5 stars Geared more toward adults
I bought this book to teach to high level middle and high school students of English in Korea. The topics are really focused more toward adult learners of English, and some of the themes are somewhat outdated (i.e. a speaker going to a Tina Turner concert). Also, for teaching students in another country (such as Korea) some of these references are totally lost. I see the potential in the book, but it won't work for my students. 5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, a great resource of ESL teachers out there!
This book and audiotape has been one of the most useful resources I've encountered thus far.The activities are very realistic in that they are the kinds of events and situations that ESL learners will encounter in the real world.I especially like the audiotape because the authors chose to use speakers that are very "normal" unlike other audiotapes where the speakers have a robotic tone to their voices. And, the speakers are involved in natural conversations.I also like that the authors chose to use speakers with other accents which again, are real-life people that ESL learners will encounter. As an adult ESL teacher I highly recommend this book! ... Listening to this tape is like sitting across the table having tea with these three wise and wonderful women. They bring their insights into life from different cultures, and yet show how much we all share. You will absolutely love this tape. Listening to any one of these women is a fabulous experience, and here that is compounded.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest audiotape ever!!!
On Creating Extraordinary Relationships is a 3 hour tape series on how tomake relationships work better through better communication, understandingand listening. The tapes talk about some basic differences between men andwomen and what to do about it.I had a lot of fun listening to it with mythen girlfriend (now my wife!). We were laughing so hard because it was sofunny yet so true! After listening to the tape we learned so much moreabout ourselves and each other. What makes it very valuable is TonyRobbins and John Gray cite so many examples and situations in our everydaylife where conflicts arise and give practical insightful tips on how toimprove the situation. Some of the words used also act as positive triggerdevices that just by mention of the words during more challengingsituations it makes the moment lighter. I love this so much I have to datebought 22 sets of this to give to friends! This is something I recommendhighly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Packed with Practical information
Robbins has done it again. The Power Talk series is well known for providing interesting insights by top authorities.Dr. Gray is well known for his unique perspectives on relationships. The combination is electric. This is three hours of pure insight into how men and women relate, and how to make the relationships you have into the relationships you want.As if that wasn't enough, these guys are hilarious. You will enjoy this tape, and you will learn from it.Buy it! ... Editorial Review

Kenneth Davis, popular purveyor of stuff you should know but never learned, turns his research engine to the land of Job and Jesus. Ever wonder who wrote the Bible, what the difference is between a disciple and an apostle, or how the Dead Sea Scrolls measure up? Davis tackles the entire Bible, book by book, from Genesis to Revelation, offering succinct capsules of the action and backgrounders that are as entertaining as the tabloids--except that Davis's information is reliable. On every page, you can see the immense amount of research he has put into this work, drawing on the most up-to-date scholarship and presenting it in fresh, easy-to-swallow doses. Chronologies at various points put historical events into perspective. The high point of Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Davis does not tell the whole story
The following is a review of Kenneth G. Davis' book Don't Know Much about the Bible.Davis is not a theologian, but a researcher and popular author. His work, therefore, proposes nothing original, but rather encapsulates the essence of contemporary liberal theology.
4-0 out of 5 stars Amen!
This is a great book.I always wondered how so many people can preach to the world that the bible is the ABSOLUTE word of God.And that every word is true. There are so many obvious contradictions in the bible that any logical mind can see that there is no possible way you can look on it as "fact."The simple point that Jesus' lineage is different depending on which book you're reading, or the order in which god created man and animals, also varies in the two creations, would be enough for any newspaper editor to suggest that his reporter "get his facts straight" and submit a re-write.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reconcile religion, science and history, with this book
This is a great book.I have never been a bible scholar and I consider myself a moderate Christian.I bought this book because I was uncomfortable with the emphasis on what I term radical Christianity.Don't Know Much . . . can be read cover to cover as a great, plain-spoken history book.It can also be used as a reference for Bible research.I have done both. It is a completely enjoyable read and I am grateful to have more facts, which have helped me reconcile my personal beliefs about Christianity and also science and history. The writer's style is so completely comfortable that I plan to purchase another Don't Know Much . . . book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Truthful discourse
Having lived in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for over a year I understand and remember the limitations I felt inside this "Magic kingdom".Saudi Arabia is a place where men have it very easy and women are the responsibility of their husbands and fathers/brothers.
5-0 out of 5 stars "They will use our tolerance to infiltrate our society with their intolerance." -Carmen Bin Ladin
This book is an intelligent, page-turning treatise of the enslaving of women and other horrific dangers of Sharia law and extreme Islamic fundamentalism. I am saddened by the forced lifestyles of women and girls in so much of Saudi Arabia. I am frightened by the implications. If you want to understand thethreat of the spread of this intolerant way of life to basic freedom, please read this book and give it to your friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pls. read this if you have suffered a loss
When I lost my hubby who was my best friend of 33 yrs. suddenly, I could not handle it.I read so many books but this was the ONLY one that gave me peace and let me think that he was definitely in the best place----away from pain and that he will always be with all of us.Pls. take my advice and read this book.it will help with the heartache and sadness.

1-0 out of 5 stars Read other books....such as the Bible
I really enjoyed this book till page 15 When Destefano begins to desribe the "interim phase" which sounds a lot like "soul sleep."This idea that those who die remain unconscious until the resurrection, is not backed up by the bible, which is where Destefan supposedly gets his references for his book. There is a reason he quotes the scriptures with numbers and records them in the back of his book....it is because the scriptures just don't fit HIS picture of Heaven.I do hope others will continue to read other books, such as John MacArthur's "The Glory of Heaven,"who quotes the scriptures immediately.Read other books about this topic before you recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Series of Worst-Case Events
Two things you should know when considering whether to buy this book:
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and handy
This book was so funny! My friend and i have nothing better to do, so we went and sat there and read all of the worst case scenario book, and i must say, this one was bomb! i loved the emergency phrases in the back, such as: Why is the water brown/green/yellow?
4-0 out of 5 stars Light reading for the adventurous tourist
This book, like the others in the series, is tongue in cheek. Some of the advice and scenarios are practical but others are completely in fun. My favourite was the advice of what to do if you are threatened with alien abduction. You should not let your mind give in to them. In other words, stop hallucinating and you will be just fine. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: The Legacy of UNFIT INCOMPETANT Mothers and Healing the Aftermath
Another reason why NOT to have children if you are not prepared to make someone else FIRST for the rest of your life!
2-0 out of 5 stars close, but not quite
I was looking for a book that had legends about orphans to which I might relate. This book only has 4 or 5 stories and I had already heard them in some form.I also thought there might be some therapeutic or life management benefit in listening to this book. However, the author merely lists the "gifts" (personality tendencies) and describes the emotions of abandoned children, but does little by way of giving ideas for healing oneself or dealing with the ongoing relationships between our relatives and others. The content and gentle delivery might be helpful to those still grieving or those still trying to put their feelings into words; but, it does little for listeners at the next level seeking solutions or strategies.

5-0 out of 5 stars True help for the pain of despair-it is like "magic '

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Education Value
These tapes are the most interesting educational tapes I have ever listened to.Mr Elster does much more than read from the dictionary. He gives you the correct pronunciation, correct usage, and the etymology of many of the words. The tapes are excellently produced and should be mandatory for all college freshman. If you want to open up a whole new world to yourself listen to these tapes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reading from dictionary
From their advertisement pitch ("a program that feeds words effortlessly into your memory... you'll be able to use hundreds of new words in hours..."), one would think that they'd used some cutting edge psychology techniques (such as NLP, conditioning, etc) to aid your learning. But you'll be disappointed when you discover that the author did little more than reading from the dictionary.4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good vocab learning
The author is very excited about his love of vocabulary and a person's vocabulary having an effect on their success. This helps to motivate you along with the host of new words you'll learn. The exercises are good but there could be more of them. Overall, its very informative and a worth the cost. ... Read more

Editorial Review

More musings from Natalie Goldberg on writing as a spiritual path, as "an authentic Zen way." Goldberg has some nice things to say about the importance of the process of writing. She recommends her students spend two years at writing "practice" before undertaking a specific project, so that they can "get in touch with their wild minds." The most inspired writing, she says, comes when one's conscious mind gets out of the way. Still, we are puzzled by Read more

I'm not just a writer, I'm a reader and collector of books. And I've collected and read a lot of books on writing over the course of my almost forty years of life. It seems to me that books on writing generally fall into about three categories: 1) reference material, such as the classic _Elements of Style_ by Strunk and White, or _On Writing Well_ by William Zinsser; 2) Exercise books, that give you a short bit of instruction or inspiration and then have exercises to prompt your writing, such as _The Artist's Way_ by Julia Cameron, or _So You Want To Write A Novel_ by Lou Willet Stanek; and 3) Writers on writing, such as Anne Lamott's wonderful _Bird by Bird_ or Stephen King's _On Writing_ or Annie Dillard's _The Writing Life_ (all of which I recommend).
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on writing, and I think Natalie Goldberg's best effort so far
This is a gem of book when it comes to delving into the fine art of writing.Clear and beautiful prose on how writing actually comes out of one's mind.At least, I seem to think and create in ways similar to what Natalie Goldberg sets down here. This book gave me more than any of her others, including her more known "Writing Down the Bones."When I finished, I felt invigorated and inspired, and the insights have carried me into some my best work.

I have read one other of Natalie's books and at one point during that first book, I was a bit put off by the journal-style, flow-of-consciousness writing. At the time, I was searching for a quick fix or perhaps I just wanted nuts-and-bolts direction. And sometimes, encountering a lot of chatter over a writer's psyche, I do want to say, "Oh what's with all the melodrama? Just tell the wanna-be that they need to be damned good story-tellers and be done with it!"
