1-0 out of 5 stars A limited view of Paris
I bought this map, having read the previous reviews. And am returning it because it gives a much too limited view of Paris. It literally cuts out whole neighborhoods -- the north end of the 18th, most of the 19th and 20th, the 12th arrondissements(including Belleville, Menilmontant), most of the 13th, 14th, 15th arrondissements including Montparnasse, the Cite Universitaire, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well done
The map is a single folded length of heavy, laminated paper. On one side is the central part of the city on the Seine, and the northern and southern portions beyond that are on the other side.It is extremely durable (it survived in my hip pocket as I walked for many miles without so much as a mussed corner), waterproof, and easy to read. All the museums, churches, squares, and even some of the major stores in Paris are marked on it.One panel has a metro map of Paris which is better than what you'll pick up in the subway stations, though it doesn't have a map of the SNCF lines outside of Paris.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good map is hard to find!
When we travel, my husband and I like to visit places that are "pedestrian friendly".We enjoy walking and hiking just about everywhere we go.For this reason a good map is as essential as a comfortable pair of shoes. The "Streetwise" series of maps (we've used the ones for Prague andVienna as well, last year) is excellent. One advantage is that they give you a fairly good idea as to what distances are from one point to another. We plan to visit Paris soon, and this map will definitely be going with us. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Photos too small to be of any value. And the Empire is dead .
Mr. Barber was apparently so taken by the idea of putting together a collection of his favorite maps that he forgot that: 1) there are already more map books on the market than you can shake a compass at and a bigger book of maps is not automatically a better book, 2) his book, like all the others, was inevitably going to suffer from the same defect, namely reproductions of maps so reduced in size as to be unreadable, and 3) putting the primary focus on maps relating to the defunct British Empire may be patriotic to his countrymen but only serves to amuse the rest of the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth the wait... finally arrived and it's stunning!
This book just arrived in the mail yesterday!Wow!I never thought I would be saying this about ANY item that takes almost three months to arrive (we are in the 21st century are we not?), but it was worth the wait. The breadth of this book's coverage is amazing - the organization by year is really interesting - you can see the progression of maps (and the dozens upon dozens of invented uses of maps). Many of the maps featured in this book seem to be rare gems. And the paper and print quality are top-notch.Best of all, this book tries to educate while it's busy pleasing the eye, asking its readers thought-provoking questions (like showing a composite satellite image and asking "is this a map"?).
3-0 out of 5 stars Better to behold than to read
This sumptuous volume of maps covers the topic from a broad perspective. The illustrations are many and pleasing to the eye.But the book seems meant to be displayed on a coffee table as it is almost too heavy to hold and read comfortably. The writing is pedestrian. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for cartography students
I am a GIS student in the natural resources field.I had to use this book and was not all that thrilled with it, but that is because it is about cartography.I reluctantly admit that us GIS-ers need to know cartography, but we don't have to like it.For mapping, this book is a good one.It covers the essential points to topics such as dot, choropleth, graduated symbol and other thematic maps.It covers how to make them and what symbols should do for the reader, as well as how to design for your map reader. It also covers mapping theory and how it relates to typography, symbol placement, visual hiearchy and the use of color.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly Disorganized
I had to use this book in two classes for my Land Use/GIS degree. The book's layout is rather confusing, and the information is not laid out in a logical manner.Headings and sub-headings are not apparent and do not follow a natural progression.Seems like the book was put together with a cut-and-paste method! The text is about as dry as a well-done pot roast.Good bedtime reading!4-0 out of 5 stars Cartography: Thematic Map Design Review
Dent has compiled and written the most comprehensive book on all aspects of thematic mapping. This book gives cartographers concepts not only of map making, but a concise exercise in artistic and informativecartography.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Driven
If you're going to Boston and don't know you're way around, you will need this book. You will need to sit down and really look at it, and then keep it with you.If you get lost, don't try and use logic or common sense to unravel your path.Just pull over and get your map out, and make a plan before you try and inch your way back into traffic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I purchased this book for my son who is moving to Salem, Mass., from Michigan in August 2006. He took it with him when he went apartment hunting and said it was "a great help." He also used it to explore Boston. He found it to be very detailed. He liked the fact that it is spiral bound, staying open easily on the needed page. For myself, I found the print just a tad too small, but being 52, my eyesight is not what it was... My son did not find this a problem. In fact, he felt that with bigger print, the book would be increased in size unfavorably. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mapping the World
Stunning pictures, brilliant descriptions and text that is relevant, readable and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend for any serious world history collection, from the high school level on up
Mapping The World: An Illustrated History Of Cartography comes from one of the major publishers specializing in geography subjects: so one would anticipate an exceptional production in book form - and it's not disappointing. Author Ralph Ehrenberg is former chief of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress, among other major archives: his background lends to a lovely coverage of over a hundred maps from around the world and across the eras. Each full-page color maps is accompanied by a detailed history and explanation setting the map in social and historical perspective. Recommend for any serious world history collection, from the high school level on up.

5-0 out of 5 stars And in this corner...
Two very fine and beautiful books about maps appeared at the end of 2005, published within a month of each other. The other one is "The Map Book" edited by Peter Barber.I happened to discover "The Map Book" before "Mapping the World", although the latter was published first.Like "The Map Book", "Mapping the World" has at its center beautifully reproduced maps in chronological order with lively and informative texts and explanations.Unlike "The Map Book", "Mapping the World" has a single author of the texts, giving the latter a more unified voice and a greater sense of historical narrative. The curious reader may deep into either book on any page and become engaged in the history, culture, and technology embodied in a particular map. Both books sit on my coffee table both for easy access and conspicuous display. ... In the Netherlands there are practically no books available on the subject of MindMapping, and this was recommended by an American friend, along with the other book that I ordered, Maps of the Imagination: The Writer as Cartographer.
5-0 out of 5 stars you can't get there from here
The editor of this book was a founder of Seattle's Bookfest, that City's annual celebration of books. The construction and design of this book is a product of the Dream Time of publishing -- nice touches like end-flaps that serve as book marks. I found the book quite handsome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and tough the Streetwise Map
The Streetwise Biblao was sure a helop to me as a tourist. Bilbao is a city in which few speak English (even at the hotels) and I found the map a godsend. It was to scale and accurate even as to the difficult Basque spelling of words. I had another map with me (It will go un-named) and it was a joke. I've come to rely on Streetwise over the years and have neve been disapointed except when they don't have a title for the city I'm visiting.

3-0 out of 5 stars old
This map is generally useful and the plastic format is very convenient, but although this site says the map is c. 2001, the map I got was a 1996 version, and therefore missing some significant developments since then, e.g., the Raval Rambla.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for pilots too
Even though pilots use detailed maps called sectionals, they just don't give you much detail about the mountains and landmarks you pass. Benchmark does a great job of labeling all the mountains, passes, and other major landmarks a pilot can use to navigate.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wait for 4th edition
While I love this map to pieces (literally my 2nd edition; 100+ road trip later, dirt, duct tape & all), I have art issues with the 3rd edition. While it is a well layed out atlas style book, the mountain ranges have too much contrast, which makes the smallest of dirt roads hard to read, esp. at 11pm -- with a dome light (or flashlight). Finding a good camp spot can be easier with the newest edition, which they may have corrected the landscape problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for off highway adventures

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearest foldable map of downtown Seattle!
Before heading into Seattle as an intern this summer, I bought a few foldable maps - each with different strengths and weaknesses.By the end of the summer, the only map living in the front seat of my MINI Cooper was this one.I love it because the streets are clearly labeled.I love it because it shows some of the surrounding neighborhoods, not just the main downtown area. And most of all, I love it because it shows the on and offramps for the freeway. How many times have you hit a bizarre interchange and not known what lane to be in, or been stuck in a maze of one-way streets? This map is absolutely the clearest at indicating directionality of streets, and that's a good thing because Seattle is a pretty messy city to get around in by car.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic map
I purchased this map to help my kids keep track of the location of their father in Iraq.It is all on one side so we could post it on a large bulletin board. It works well for our purpose.I only which it showed long. and lat. but it is meant to be a road map so I suppose I am expecting a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best of a weak collection of available materials
This product is useful for area familiarization for the American on his or her way to Iraq, the best of three different maps I ordered.A good reference for the lay of the land of the entire country, but no detailed inserts of cities other than central Baghdad. The map is printed on only one side, so there would have been more than enough space to cover the provincial cities. The ITM Baghdad map is not quite so worthwhile, almost no detail whatsoever, but a handy sketch of the main districts of the city. I had hoped to find maps with the Arabic script place names alongside the English, but perhaps that was too much too hope for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfectly serviceable map of Iraq

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful but limited in its area of coverage

I can recommmend this book in three ways-as a coffee table book,as a map collector's reference book, and as a history book.As a book out on your living room table, visitors will be sure to pick it up and review it.As a collector's reference it is wonderful.A good overview of various maps, some one of a kind, with a great writeup on each map and mapmaker. It may become a "reference" book, whereby the maps shown are more desirable to collectors simply because they are listed in "Cohen".Finaly, it is a great history book dealing with the exploration of America westward. Highly recommend to anyone interested in maps and mapping, or in American history. ... Read more
