5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I have always been a fan of atlases and I received this atlas a birthday gift.Absolutely amazing. This atlas has the most comprehensive index I've seen in a world atlas. Also the coverage of the Antarctic continent is very thorough, something that almost all other world atlases lack.5 stars, excellent atlas.

3-0 out of 5 stars A downgrade from previous editions
The Times Atlas made its reputation by being the best atlas in the English Language. In previous editions, its detail and scale was as good as you could get(except for the briefly available and slightly less comprehensive Book of the World from Macmillan). This latest edition may still be better than anything else out there, but I haven't bought it even though I'd like to update.I've looked it over in stores, and the user who noted the reduced scales is right on the mark.I think all of the map scales have been reduced somewhat from earlier editions. He's probably also right about the clarity of the cartography. All in all, I'd say they had poor judgment in downgrading. This was the atlas for people who really knew maps, wanted the best and were willing to pay for it.Now it's a disappointment.

2-0 out of 5 stars going downhill
My old 5th edition (1977) of this atlas sustained some water damage, so I decided to upgrade to the new 11th. My 2 stars are in relationship to a previous 5 stars. Perhaps I would rate it higher if I didn't have an earlier edition to compare it with. It's not all bad: there is a new enlarged view of southern China and Taiwan, a larger map of Korea, a blown-up view of central Japan, a new enlarged view of central Mexico, better coverage of South America, etc. There are several major problem areas, however: a couple of glaring examples: in the older version of central Italy, the scale is 1:1,000,000 and includes a detailed map of Rome which is laid over the sea off the west of the peninsula. In the new version, the scale is only 1:1,250,000 which includes a vast, empty area of the Tyrrhenian Sea taking up about half of the whole map. The map of southern Italy is even worse: it is the same reduced 1:1,250,000 and is about 3/4 empty ocean, whereas the older version has the more detailed 1:1,000,000 scale which also shows more detailed views of Sardinia and Sicily, and much less empty ocean. Greece and its islands also show up smaller in the new version (the page dimensions are the same!). The new version has a 1:3,000,000 map of the whole of Turkey, including generous swaths of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean; the older version had two much more detailed (1:2,000,000) maps of eastern and western Turkey. The scale on the New York/New Jersey map is about the same in both editions; the older has a 1:250,000 scale map of the NYC urban area filling in the large area of ocean s.e. of the city, but in the new version that map is gone, all we have left is the big empty ocean. I'm sure that saved them some money, but not if nobody wants to buy it..... The city maps which were tucked into "low-rent" spaces (empty ocean etc.) in many, many places in the old versions are now all gone. Although the paper-quality is good, and the inking has a crisp, clean look, the topography is not as much fun as before: everything is in a lighter shade (they saved themselves some more money!) and so the distinctions between lowland and mountainous areas are not as clear as before. I was going to donate my older atlas to the department library, but now I'm going to keep it! I feel like the new version is a kind of insult to my intelligence: I don't need to see all of Turkey together to realize it is a single country, what I expect to see in a big, expensive atlas is DETAIL, not cost-cutting. Since this is supposed to be the best, I would be willing to pay even a little more, if I got my money's worth. This time I didn't. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Atlas of the World by National Geographic
This is a wonderful full-color book on the geography of the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars National Geographic has made changes
In December 2004, National Geographic (NG) updated the Persian Gulf plate (Plate 75) to accomodate the controversies surrounding the place-names used in the 8th edition.5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Family Resource
I've had the new atlas for 60 days and find myself looking something up every 2-3 days. It's really been fun looking up remote places like Palmyra Atoll, Kerguelen Island, the Fly River and other obscure places I read about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifelong reference book
This atlas is the standard for Geography 101 in campuses across the country. It sets the standard because it is affordable and extremely useful in geographic exercises. In truth, it is primarily a North American atlas, but that is because it is written for and marketed to North Americans. There are still more than enough maps of other world regions to assist you in Geography 101 or to assist you in monitoring the world news.Granted, an intense study of total world geography would require an additional atlas. That said, I purchased this atlas for a geography course in which it was instrumental.Since then, I have used it in more advanced geography courses and in my daily life. While I would prefer it to be printed in a bit larger format, this size is more affordable to students.I will keep this atlas to assist in lifelong learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars very happy
This is the textbook for my college geography course. I saved fifteen dollars over my college bookstore, their's was a softback amazon's is hardback, it will last longer, I'm happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool
This book is a wonderful tool for anyone that wishes to learn the anatomy of a horse. I use it with my animal massage and animal communication clients to better show exactly where on the horse they have an issue. It is nice for those people that do not want to see the anatomy of a cadaver animal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning tool!
I am an instructor/trainer and this book is wonderful for informing students how the horses body is put together and why some horses move differently than others. It also gives the student a chance to see the inside workings of the horse so that they better understand the vet and farrier when they have to explain what is wrong with the horse and treatment options. This book would also benefit anyone who wants to know more about the horse's anatomy. Not to mention it is fun to color!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Muscle Sketches
I wish that I had this book last year. I did a muscle and joint force project for which I needed detailed muscle diagrams of the horse's hindquarters. When I needed the illustrations, of course, I could not find any that had the appropriate level of detail (not online, through videos, books, etc). For this reason when I recently saw this book it. I would strongly recommend that any other rider or person with a starting interest in horse healthcare do the same. This is an excellent addition to a equine reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Map
This is a good, clear map which is easy to read. The vinyl cover is a definite plus.It helps keep the map clean and notes can be tucked inside it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Road Atlas
Rand McNally is a consistantly good road atlas. The 2006 issue was very helpful in planning my recent trip.It doesn't replace the on-line maps or city atlases that show every street, turn, and such, but when you run into a temporary interstate closure, it answers the question of what is my best option now.

5-0 out of 5 stars As easy as it gets
Ever since my first trip to NYC in 1989, I have relied on having a -no more than 2-3 years old- copy of Rand McNally in our rented car.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is simply one of the best NYC historical reference work available. The book is divided into periods and will display numerous maps , photos and drawings of the buildings and landscape of the city at that time in history. Plenty of history is included to make certain you are keyed in to the era, and how the buildings fit in. Just a beautiful book. Great binding and very sturdy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Almost Great
This book includes many really nice maps of early New York.Much of the historical information included in the maps is uniquely presented here and lacking in many other publications. However, there are many editorial mistakes and misspellings that I have observed, which makes me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the information.Additionally, the narrative text is simple, limited and sometimes disjointed and difficult to follow.Buy this book simply for its beautiful graphics and depictions of the city as it used to be. Some periods of the city's history could be greatly expanded, especially the city's role in the revolution and the siege of Fort Washington. Anyone with knowledge of the city will find it of limited value beyond the maps and illustrations.A little polishing of this book and some additional material for some historical periods in a future edition would make this book an outstanding work. For now, I would call it good but lacking in important areas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive
This atlas is very comprehensive and contains colour maps showing the religious composition of the various regions of the United States from the pre-colonial days down to the present. 5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a focus on the history and geographic development
Brett Carroll's Historical Atlas of Religion in America provides a focus on the history and geographic development of American religions, providing maps and visual details to bring alive the connections between American political and religious history. From parts played by religious groups of Europe to the development of sects in the country, this provided a well-rounded survey. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Me on the Map
My six year old daughter loved this book. The words were easy enough for her to read and the repetition reinforced her early reading skills. We used this book as an introduction to perspective, maps, and self-awareness.The pictures were fresh, clean, and uncluttered. We plan on getting the rest of the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Perspective for Younger Children
A very simplistic but impacting look at maps from a me/mine perspective beginning with her room, house, street... all the way to world and then back to room. The theme is "everyone has a special place in the world and this is how you'll find me"; using a map.The illustrations of the map are very vague in terms of detail, but gives a great relative perspective of the area it comprises. It will introduce the younger children and provide a more vivid explanation to the older ones.I would recommend ages K-4th grades. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Atlas on DVD
Just to answer Craig: Try the Microsoft Encarta DVD. It includes a world atlas that alone is worth the price. When zoomed all the way out, it is like a globe you can turn with your mouse. At the highest magnification it presents more detail than any atlas I know of. All country names and many city names and geological features are hot linked to the encyclopedia articles. There are many interactive ways of using this atlas including choosing themes like population density, precipitation, and statistics.
4-0 out of 5 stars I'm humbled but I need your help
I have not bougght this atlas.Maybe I will BUT WHAT I REALLY WANT IS SOMETHING of superb detail that is on a DVD.Does ANYBODY make such a thing?
2-0 out of 5 stars The formation of Arabian Gulf?
National Geographic Atlas has always been a great informational source. However, I was quite shocked by what I saw in the last edition (the 8th).I am sure most of those who have bought this Atlas or had a chance to look at it by now, have noticed the formation of a new gulf that never existed before, Arabian Gulf! It's sad how money can replace names even in the map (Arabian Gulf instead of Persian Gulf!)What National Geographic hasn't noticed yet is how its credibility has dropped among the intellectual crowd and many others are enraged by this act.I never thought history can be distorted, but with what I saw from National Geographic, which has lost it's credibility among those that understand the impact of this change, I am not so sure any more. It's unfortunate and humiliating what money can do! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You need this book!
Trust me, you will love it. Even though most microbiology courses come with a lab book, it is nothing like this book. It has ALL the pictures you need, information, easy to read and most of all, will surely get you through the course with ease. It helps in every aspect.
