3-0 out of 5 stars Too large.
Had I known the atlas was this large I would not have purchased it.It has already been added to my next Goodwill pickup.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book
This atlas shows every single back road in the state. It also has topographical features and a handy guide to campgrounds, recreational areas, fishing/hunting spots, and the like. Because many roads are unlabeled on the maps, it's not all that useful if you're lost in a downtown area. Instead, it's designed to help locate out-of-the-way spots for outdoor recreation. Te amount of detail on these maps is incredible. It complements, rather than replaces, a traditional road atlas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great South Carolina Reference Book
South Carolina Atlas and Gazetteer is a great resource for locating any lake, road, or state park in the state. For the outdoorsman, you can find information on hunting, fishing, hiking trails, golf courses, heritage preserves, and beaches all within these pages.Consequently, this atlas makes a fine resource for researching the land of South Carolina. With great attention to detail, Delorme has produced an exceptional atlas worthy of high praise. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars useful, and good luck finding any others...
If you're looking at this review, and are interested in a map of Bhutan, you probably already know there just aren't many such maps available in the world. In fact, even this one is hard to find. It did the job for me on my recent trip there, and helped me identify the Himalayan peaks I saw from Dochu La, although the elevation listed on my copy for Jhomolari seems a bit high. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful close up view of Mayan people in Belize
My experience has been as part of medical and dental support to the villages in the Toledo District since 1988. The maps are accurate and give a feeling that you are walking down the trails with the writer. This is an excellent presentation of the villagers at a level rarely seen in such a book. It is mostly written by the villagers and has their perspective. Clearly written by those that love and are proud of their traditions and culture. The book is a beautiful reflection of a beautiful and kind people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
I lived in Belize for two years and was fortunate enough to travel extensively throughout southern Belize, the Toledo district that this book brings to life so well. The time that I spent with the Mayans in the region impacted my life dramatically, to the point I wrote my own book concerning my time there ("Following Mateo" by Tom Molanphy, available through amazon.com and trafford.com). The Maya Atlas was an invaluable resource for me while trying to portray a fair picture of the Mayans of southern Toledo; in fact, it was the only book I found that focused exclusively on the Belizean Mayan lifestyle and the challenges to that lifestyle. Full of wonderful color maps and photos, this books tells the story of Belize in the words of Mayans themselves. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn about a fascinating and endangered culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Own for collectors of Apache Culture
Anthropologists, language students, and Native American culture afficionados will find this book, and any by Keith Basso, written links into a cultural past which struggles to exist today. As the Western Apache tribes become more modern, the information found in this and other Keith Basso writings, become necessities in the preservation of traditional Apache culture; with the exception of the knowledge of a few hundred very traditional Apaches still living in Arizona.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom Sits in Places
This book was mediocre at best.Although Keith Basso did provide some insight into why the Apache people cherish their land, I felt that Basso kept on saying the exact same thing in every sentence.I had the point of the entire book by the time I was ten pages into it, and it kept on going, therefore making me lose my concentration on what I was reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars strong and thorough examination
What do people make of places? This is the central question examined by Keith Basso in his ethno-linguistic study of the relationship between language and landscape among the Apaches of Cibecue, on the Fort Apache Reservation in central Arizona.Basso, a professor of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico, has spent over 30 years conducting field work among the Western Apaches. His publications concerning this group include articles on language, patterns of silence in social interaction, witchcraft beliefs, and ceremonial symbolism, among others. The idea for Wisdom Sits in Places stemmed from a study conducted between 1979 and 1984, in which Basso, with the help of a grant from the National Science Foundation and the guidance of the Apaches, conducted a study of Apache places and place-names; how the Apache refer to their land, the stories behind the place-names, and how these place-names are used in daily conversation by Apache men and women. The result is a stunningly informative account of the use of landscape and language in the social interactions of the Western Apaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Collector's Delight
I can recommmend this book in three ways-as a coffee table book,as a map collector's reference book, and as a history book.As a book out on your living room table, visitors will be sure to pick it up and review it.As a collector's reference it is wonderful.A good overview of various maps, some one of a kind, with a great writeup on each map and mapmaker. It may become a "reference" book, whereby the maps shown are more desirable to collectors simply because they are listed in "Cohen".Finaly, it is a great history book dealing with the exploration of America westward. Highly recommend to anyone interested in maps and mapping, or in American history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Tale of Discovery & Use of the Compass
The "Riddle" is well researched and written in a down to earth, flowing, enjoyable, fascinating and educational journey of discovery. Good illustrations help clarify text descriptions. To emphasize the *importance of the compass to navigation*, there is a quote from an English Augustinian monk, Alexander Neckam (1157-1217) from his book, `De Naturis Rerun':
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Left Some Explanations Open
The topic was certainly interesting, but the device is so simple that it's a little difficult to go much deeper than the author did. He certainly cites enough documents, but, not too unexpectedly, they seem to talk to human events rather than of anything technical. It's good to know about how the sixteen points came about, but he offered no explanation about what I consider the somewhat bizarre naming of the points. Maybe I'm missing something, but is the scheme for name ordering the points between, say, N and E, the same as from, say, E to S?
1-0 out of 5 stars Amateurish and poorly researched.
I'll put it simply: this is a poor history of the compass. For almost ten years, publishers have been throwing money at anyone who might attempt to repeat the success of Dava Sobel's 'Longitude', and here we see the worst outcome of that lust for success. This book is worthless.

4-0 out of 5 stars i like it
This is great for browsing (if you like maps of different periods in history that is).It won't stand on it's own as a history textbook, but I don't imagine it was intended to.I like the fact that it is lightweight and portable...not so big and fat that it's hard to find the page you're looking for, or a place to store it.I think it would be a great supplement for people who are learning history, as well as for those who read a lot of things from or about various periods in history.I keep it on the coffee table and enjoy looking through it often.I'm giving it only 4 stars because I'd like to see a few more details and features on the maps.Still, this really is a great bargain of an atlas.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Atlas that's an Atlas
Thank goodness I can still buy an atlas that is really an atlas. I read a lot of history, and having reached that stage in life where most of the books I enjoy are not profusely illustrated, I have been searching for a good historical atlas. I've bought several now, covering different periods and regions, but most have been a dissapointment (the lone exception being the Penguin Atlas of Medieval History). Instead of an atlas, i.e., a collection of maps, what I got was an illustrated history book. Unfortunately, to make room for the text, graphs, etc., they left out most of the maps. The maps that were included often ignored political boundaries, or tried to encapsulate 100 years of change on a single, low-detail map with a few arrows and dots drawn on. While I understand that history is much more than political and national boundaries, those are the aspects of history that change most rapidly, thus requiring more maps to follow. I remember the old Hammond Historical Atlas from my childhood, as the perfect companion for most books of post-Renaissance European history (and not bad for earlier periods, though usually weak outside Europe). I just hope it hasn't changed too much.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bargain priced, but no text. Very basic.
First of all: this book is a bargain. At under ten bucks, you can get maps of world history to refer to.However, there are a few problems: (1) The book offers no text to explain history. So you really need to know the history yourself or have companion books to help; (2) the book emphasizes European state history, and shortchanges other nations, cultural changes, religious movements, migrations, slavery, technologies, etc. This is mostly a book of maps showing the changing territories of nations.////I was hoping to assign this book to my college Geography students, but will not, nor do I have much use for it myself.I much prefer the other Hammond world historical atlas, even at the higher cost. Most of the new, larger world historical atlasses are superior, becuase they show that history is so much more than states. In sum, this book is a disappointment, useful to a very limited audience. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars pro vs. con
Actually I bought this book for my husband who thought he needed a larger scale print then the one that he already had. At first glance he thunbed through it and decided right away that it was too different then the one he was used to so he wanted me to send it back, he said that that the common places that he frequented (because he drives a truck) were broken up and not as large as he really wanted, (really it was just different and he had yet to give it a chance being stuck in his ways). Before I had a chance to send it back he got called to take a load somewhere and when I had got home from work the book was gone. He had taken it with him. When he returned home he concluded that actually this new book did indeed have larger scale maps and all the places that he frequented only divided onto more than one page and also larger scale maps of places that he frequented that the other map book he was accustomed to did not. So in conclusion he say's that some of the cities are broken up on too many pages and that (because it sits on the seat beside him) it slides around too much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars delorme gazetteer series
the delorme gazeteer series is perfect for people who want to wander off of the main roads.my wife and i like to point the car as whim sees fit.the map has backroads with enought detail to let us find our wish and our way back.essential for indirect travel.also has marked 4wd trails to unknown wonders, as well as a smattering of known wonders (waterfalls, museums, fishing, camping...).not a replacement for usgs quads, but will make the travel to your hike more fun.if you are interested in exploring a state, or some portion thereof, the gazetteer series is an invaluable tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michigan Atlas and Gazetteer
We previously owned the Minnesota version of this Atlas.Recently we bought the Michigan version and found it very helpful on a trip to the UP of Michigan. The great detail in the maps helps find the small things the state maps leave out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Names make a city more alive
Brooklyn has several patterns of street numbering, but streets that carry names of people add the presence of those folk, yes, even if the named are deceased!Congratulations to authors Leonard Benardo and Jennifer Weiss for the scholarship and style that went into this handy, fascinating book of Brooklyn neighborhoods and names.A few years ago, when a friend inquired about Maujer Street, Williamsburg, where she grew up, I inquired at the nearby branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. We learned he was a local alderman, but the informative source was only a few typed pages of Brookyn street names."Brooklyn by Name" has come to the rescue.I believe it is the first book published on this topic.Arranged geographically into eight chapters, it is aided by well-selected and helpful photos. The authors introduce the history of the region, then explain the street names alphabetically. The book's index is complete, not limited to street names, but including famous Brooklynites mentioned in the volume. As for The Bronx, James McNamara spent his lifetime compiling and revising his "History in Asphalt."Two books have been published about Manhattan stret names. As far as I know, no author has published a guide of Queens street names nor those of Staten Island."Brooklyn by Name" is a model of the genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real treat
This is a wonderfully enjoyable read: informative, witty, original. And I'm not even from New York!

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive snippets of Brooklyn history
Brooklynites, did you know Empire Boulevard was originally Malbone Street, but was renamed after a devastating 1918 Brighton Beach Line train accident there that killed more than 90 people? Did you know that parts of DeGraw St. in Park Slope were renamed Lincoln Place in 1873 because a famous murder there had caused the street name to be tainted by association?
