4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to get lost with this one...
An excellent book for those starting out on orienteering. Very good conversational wording. Doesn't use too much jargon. The practical exercises are easily understood. The combination of the written word and neat diagrams and pictures make the information easily digestable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Map and Compass Instruction Book

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for pilots too
Even though pilots use detailed maps called sectionals, they just don't give you much detail about the mountains and landmarks you pass. Benchmark does a great job of labeling all the mountains, passes, and other major landmarks a pilot can use to navigate.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wait for 4th edition
While I love this map to pieces (literally my 2nd edition; 100+ road trip later, dirt, duct tape & all), I have art issues with the 3rd edition. While it is a well layed out atlas style book, the mountain ranges have too much contrast, which makes the smallest of dirt roads hard to read, esp. at 11pm -- with a dome light (or flashlight). Finding a good camp spot can be easier with the newest edition, which they may have corrected the landscape problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for off highway adventures
Just got into dirt biking around SoCal, and this atlas has good detail for forest service roads, jeep trails, railroad and utility rights of way, etc. A bit large to carry on the bike, but worth th effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Atlas I have ever saw on Alaska
Complete, detailed, with all information you may need. A must and in a large format. If you plan to travel to Alaska by any means, do not miss this!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point for Planning
The sheer size of Alaska tends to defeat what would otherwise be an unbeatable map collection for most states in the lower 48.A second challenge is the very thin transportation infrastructure in Alaska; huge areas of the state are not on the limited road network and can be reached in a timely manner only by air.Enormous swaths of wilderness have no transportation network at all.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-buy for those driving in Alaska
This atlas is a tremendous fount of information for those travelling Alaska or even just interested. It even has GPS coordinates! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and well organized
This atlas is arranged and presented in a way that makes all of its information easily accessible and easy to find. All systems and structures of the human anatomy are shown in various formats, from cutaways to x-rays, with such a wide variety of helps that it's hard to imagine valid criticism.Tables, legends, indexes, brief verbal descriptions of the pertinent physiological functions, etc. It's practically impossible to get lost in this well-organized atlas, and beyond its obvious uses for medical students etc., it's an indispensible part of my library for transcription.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best atlas for a student's needs
You couldn't ask more from an atlas. It has good drawings, radiographs, accompayning text, and muscle charts. The pictures are easy to follow, and don't crowd the structures with excessive labeling (Netter). What's the big deal with the beauty of his drawings anyway?I purchased a Clemente atlas without the CD and reccommend it that way unless you want to pay twice as much to have the same information in two forms.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best atlas for a student's needs
Clemente took the best of what other's have drawn, and has put them together in this incredibly useful atlas.Everyone harps about Netter's.I agree that it is a good atlas, but Netter labeled way too many structures on many pictures and lacks prose to help explain the pictures.Additionally, Clemente included charts that group everything you need to know about a muscle (origin, action...) at the end of each section.By the way, why does it matter that Netter's pictures are so beautiful? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars map lovers, look out!
this is truly an extraordinary book, with excellent reproductions of all types of maps. the index provides the original map dimensions, which i found helpful. this book would be a great additional to any library, young or old.

5-0 out of 5 stars History Through Illuminating Maps
David Rumsey was fascinated by maps as a kid, and they were always papered onto the walls of his room. The fascination with maps did not leave him, through several degrees in fine art and a career in real estate. He amassed one of the largest private collections of maps, The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, 150,000 catalogued items stored on the ground floor of his house in San Francisco, which is a working library for people to use.The items are wall maps, folding maps, globes, map puzzles, and many others. There is a sampling of the collection in _Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed_ (ESRI Press) by David Rumsey and Edith M. Punt, a slim but large-paged, handsome volume containing all kinds of maps concentrating on North America. They show the history of America, to be sure, but are also a history of mapmaking.Rumsey has painstakingly put items in his collection on the Internet, so he himself is participating in mapmaking history, and some pages of this beautiful book demonstrate what can be done with maps transformed into pixels.
5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding and representative collection
The impressively collaborative work of David Rumsey (President of Cartography Associates, a San Francisco-based digital publishing company, and Director of Luna Imaging, a provider of enterprise software for online image collections) and Edith M. Punt (professional cartographer and recipient of the 1996 National Geographic Award in Cartography), Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed is a 160-page, hardcover, coffee-table book printed on archival paper which showcases how technology has literally transformed the restoration, re-creation and reproduction of historical maps. The specific focus is upon maps (and the people who made them) that reflect American history and ranges from a 1736 atlas depicting California as an island, to a Civil War era "bird's-eye" view of military positions on the southeastern seaboard. This is an outstanding and representative collection drawn from the David Rumsey Map Collection and illustrates early American history from a uniquely geographic perspective. With it's informed and informative text, Cartographica Extraordinaire is clearly recommended for inclusion into professional, academic and community library Cartography Studies or American History collections. Indeed, Cartographica Extraordinaire would make an excellent selection for a truly unique Library Memorial Fund acquisition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much improved, a few flaws
I had an edition of this atlas that was published in 1965, but was still on sale until recently. As an avid reader of history of all periods, I consulted this atlas quite frequently. The new 2005 edition is much welcome. Many of the maps are identical to those in the older edition, but much has been added. In general, the new edition is less Eurocentric, containing new maps of African, South American and Asian polities. A notable omission is any description of the breakup of the USSR. The map of WWII is not useful, and appears to have been put in as an afterthought. The map of the Vietnam War is good, but the Korean War map is very difficult to read. Very good new maps also include world distributions of languages, religions, income and literacy, as well as descriptions of political, military and econimic alliances. Overall, an excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good teaching resource
This inexpensive atlas has proven to be a useful teaching resource, given the typically meagre historical and geographical understanding of undergraduate college students.Although coverage is necessarily selective, it hits the major events of the past (wars, empires), and includes a good level of material on the world outside of the US.

3-0 out of 5 stars you've got to wonder about 50% discounts
The maps may be glorious (although continuing them across a page split is a serious no-no for a putatively "high-end" atlas), but the binding is from hunger. I can scarcely believe that the publisher would see fit to package such a heavy-duty work in flimsy cardboard with cheap contact paper fittings. No, I'm not asking for tooled morocco, but pay a little respect to your content by packing it with due professionalism! I expect this to be reduced to flinders in short order--not necessarily requiring terribly much rough handling! I am profoundly disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something that I can understand
I am currently living in China and "OH BOY!"this atlas sure comes in handy. It's nice to be able to read maps in english especially where I live.I was amazed that the atlas actually arrived here, I thought it would have been confiscated. The context and texture of the book is very impressive.I dare not let the kids handle it without supervision.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Altas for Students and Anyone Else Interested in Global Events
The new Oxford Atlas of the World Deluxe Edition represents a breakthrough in the areas of research, skill, and ease of use.As an author and educator with over 35 years of teaching experience, I found its maps are large and easy to read, and it includes exceptionally vivid depictions of landforms such as mountains, rivers, and deserts. There are so many large scale maps of many places in the news today, such as Mexico, Israel, Jordan, Korea, and Central Asis, that it seemed to bring the world into my own living room with increased awareness.Indeed, it provides more coverage of North America, the United States, Europe and Asia than any other atlas I have used or seen in libraries. The clarity of the maps is truly amazing. There must be over 275 detailed topographic maps as well as a set of six ocean floor maps and maps of the Moon and the night sky.As if this weren't enough, I found the more than 100 metropolitan maps and city center plans for major cities around the world an added bonus. It is great if you are traveling or writing about a specific place. In addition, I found the protective slip case it comes with takes up less space than many other cumbersome reference books. For my money, this Atlas makes a great addition for anyone interested in following world events, and a fantastic holiday or birthday gift for students of all ages. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great alongside travel guides
Used this map on our last two trips and found it to be a useful tool alongside our travel guides. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the map can be somewhat "busy." You probably could tour the island alone with the map, but a good guide like 'Maui - Mile by Mile' is perfect with this map.

Editorial Review

Since 1970 South Africa ended apartheid; Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected president of Haiti, deposed by military coup then reinstated; San Francisco suffered a major earthquake; and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dissolved. So it's a good thing Merriam-Webster updated its geographical dictionary to include more than 48,000 alphabetically arranged entries of mountains, lakes, towns, and countries. The third edition had a lot of catching up to do, what with the social, political, financial, and physical upheavals that have taken place since the second edition was published, and the result is a modern and sophisticated reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary
The dictionary was delivered as promised and in excellent condition.I consider Amazon to be a great site and I will order from them again in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comparison between 1988 and 2001 Editions
I had been using the 1988 edition without the need to update my library with the Second Edition until last year. Owing to geopolitical changes since 1988, a more recent edition of Webster's New Geographical Dictionary seemed necessary and the Third Edition was the current version available. The Third Edition contains more current background information (e.g. Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), expanded entries (e.g. Palghat), a subtle, easier-to-read font, sidebars, and cleaner maps (e.g. Palestine). That said, if you want more detailed maps or more concise country profiles, you might be better off checking other resource materials such as National Geographic (Magazine maps) and The CIA World Fact Book respectively. Where this boook retains its advantage is that it contains diacritical notation for the proper pronunciation of the place names.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding
This is an excellent reference book that covers a myriad of geographical locations. The maps are also excellent.I highly recommend this book.A previous reviewer claims that the editors made an egregious mistake by including Slovenia as part of the Balkan states.Maybe that person should do a little research because virtually every resource, including Microsoft Encarta, includes Slovenia in the Balkans. And yes, the Ottomans did conquer Slovenia. The Ottomans had to surrender Slovenia, Hungary, and Croatia to the Hapsburgs in 1699.The editors of this book got it right on the money. As for that reviewer -- a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent course textbook
I received a copy of this book from the publisher when I was teaching a university course on cartography. The textbook for the semester had already been selected, so I used this book originally as a second resource while preparing lectures. By the end of the semester, I found myself using this book as the primary source for topics and explanations and suggested it be used in future semesters.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help
If I were stuck on a deserted Island like Tom Hanks in Cast Away, and I could only have one book, it would be this one.It would help me to get off the island and determine my global positioning!Lots of help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cartographer's View of the World
When you've been working in a field for 30 years it's really difficult to drag yourself backwards and review data you already know, so when I signed up for a GPS (Global Positioning Sattelite) software course I looked at "Map Use & Analysis" by John Campbell as something I could just skip over, but since it was required reading I finally got it out. I was really pleased with the depth of material and the extremely clear explanations of all those mystifying cartography words. Anyone who has no idea about mapping or is a begining student will be able to use this book. The format is excellent with terms higligted and the index and dictionary are well coordinated. I feel that this book is such an excellent reference that I am buying a copy for myself. The only negative thing I have to say is that the illustrations, which are plentiful seem to wander several pages ahead of text, but they are carefully numbered and correspond exactly to the descriptions. Well done! Les L. Johnson ... Read more

I have travelled through much of Europe and I am a pretty good navigator.Usually armed with a good guide book and a map I can learn my way around in no time.Venice presented a particular challenge because of the canals, and narrow streets, alleys, plus the unique naming system. While I still was not often sure if I was going the right way, this map definitely was an asset and was the guide to the city that I have seen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Highly overpriced poor map
This map was a terrible disappointment. It leaves out whole important sections of the city (the Giudecca, even the Lido!), gives only the main streets (thus making it much easier to get lost in an already maze-like place), and leaves out vital information found on standard tourist maps, such as water-bus (vaporetto) routes and opening times for museums. My advice: save your money and get a decent map for a few bucks when you get to Venice.

4-0 out of 5 stars You will still find a deadend
Regardless of the map you WILL find a deadend in Venice - turn the corner and there is no more - either a wall or a canal.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Take a hike
I was hoping this would be as excellent as the Maine Gazeteer, but it isn't.It is a topographical map, which is fine if all you want to do is hike mountains. But if you want street names and town names better grab a magnifying glass.Tiny print and roads drawn in pastel colors is not really helpful.Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a map
It's a map. That's what it is.And a very detailed and useful one, at that. It's difficult to write a review for a...map.But this is the one you should buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars World Atlas
The atlas was all as described. It is 8 1/2" x 11" but is easy to read and find what you need to find.I am very pleased with the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent bird's eye view
I browsed the world atlas maps in a bookstore and find this one fit my needs the best. It offers continental (asia, europe, north/south america, ...) graph with various colorshades for population, climate, literacy, GDP, life-expentency....also global graph. Comparative is the best essence of this atlas.

2-0 out of 5 stars Organized, clearly written, but misleading title
While I enjoyed the author's clear writing style, and I was pleased to see that the level of detail and explanation given in each chapter is consistent, I did not find the book's content to be particularly valuable.
3-0 out of 5 stars Faltou profundidade nas infromações
Muitas dicas interessante, mas sem profundidade. Livro interessante para iniciantes, mas fraco para quem já conhece os recuros. Faltou também informação sobre o Google Earth.
