Looking to live somewhere where houses are cheap? Head to Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Iowa, where the average home costs $75,700, and annual property taxes for that home are about $960. Perhaps a good job market is a higher priority. In that case, pick Phoenix, Arizona; Las Vegas, Nevada; or Riverside, California, as they top the list of places projected to have the highest-percentage increase in new jobs by 2005. Most of those jobs, by the way, are expected to have above-average pay. This and other detailed information can be found in the sixth edition of Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A city may be "great on paper" but beware!
These books are full of extremely helpful information, but I warn my fellow readers to take a place's culture into account before making a life-changing move. The books will not help you here. My husband and I bought a previous edition of Places Rated and devoured it while looking for a place to relocate from Los Angeles. We settled on a southern capital that seemed to have everything going for it, including consistently high rankings in Places Rated and every other city ranking we could find. Unfortunately, a city that looks great on paper may not be the place for you. Despite having lived in several states, we were unprepared for the surprising difficulties we experienced as "yankees" living in the south. From petty social and work discrimination to routinely being screwed over by one business after another hired to work on our home or car, etc., it became evident that we were identified as "yankees" on sight and treated accordingly. So much for southern hospitality! I assure you that we did our best to fit in and make friends, as we have successfully done in every other region of the country. After 2-1/2 years of this, we sold our home for a loss and got our "unsweet tea" out of there. Perhaps we were naive, not realizing that the yankee business is still such a potent issue in the south, but we will make future relocation choices with this experience in mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book of its kind.
It's tough to read a book of someone's opinions on where to live as its really a heartfelt decision each person needs to make for themselves. But most of this book is straight statistics, such as weather and crime. The book is big and leaves enough room for each metro area so you can read the climate graphs without too much eyestrain. It's the best book on deciding where to move that I found. I took tons of notes from this book, and it actually helped me pick an entirely new place to live than the ones I had originally thought of! The only section I didn't like was the arts and culture section. I'm into the artsy scene, but the authors rated cities based on number of symphonies and orchestras and operas - who goes to these anymore??

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
This book is just great.I have bought every retirement-places-rated type of book that I can get my hands on and this author is by far the best. The millennium edition is twice as big as the last edition and every subject is covered that anyone would want to know about an area; cost of living, transportation, jobs, education, climate, crime, the arts, health care, recreation.I can't wait for the next edition to come out! We're not retiring any time soon so it's helpful to really be able to study and evaluate where we are going to want to retire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A compendium of invaluable statistics and sports references which libraries will find useful and popular
ESPN is the acknowledged leader in sports reporting and that's why its reference ESPN SPORTS ALMANAC 2006 is so important: it covers the biggest personalities and events of the year, offering access to statistics, individual award-winners, teams, and critical overviews by ESPN expert reporters. From college sports to football, basketball, baseball and more, ESPN SPORTS ALMANAC is a compendium of invaluable statistics and sports references which libraries will find useful and popular.
4-0 out of 5 stars A PERFECT GIFT FOR THE SPORTS FAN
I should know, I own it!!! I have grabbed these books since 1998, and they are superb. The only thing I do not like about the ESPN Sports Almanac, is that sometimes, there is a misprint, but it is rare. This is a superb book for anyone who wants to know the all time and previous year records in baseball, football, hockey, nascar racing, formula racing, golf, tennis, and basketball. But these sports are not the only ones covered in this extra thick publication. You will get info on Olympic sports including gymnastics, bobsledding, skiing, track & field, etc. The book covers the previous year in sports headlines, It has tons of information on off the wall sports like badminton and rugby, and it comes from the favorite sports people of America, ESPN. Enough said!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is it! Statistics are the mother's milk of sports
And here it all is, in one handy, well organized alamanac. Football, Baseball, Basketball, Racing and more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely relevant even today
For example, my favorite Franklin quote about taxes - which is so very true today - is this:
5-0 out of 5 stars The first "Poor Richard" as printed...
In 1733 Benjamin Franklin released the first Poor Richard's Almanac. He was by no means famous when it appeared. Another twenty years would pass before his electrical experiments brought him worldwide attention. But some Philadelphians knew Franklin as a dedicated printer and public servant. Regardless, Franklin needed amarketing gimmick to gain a percentage of the crowded almanac market. This bold trick involved his main competitor, Titan Leeds. On the inside cover Franklin (writing as "Richard Saunders" or "Poor Richard") predicted Leed's death in October of that same year. It worked. The "scandal" spread throughout Philadelphia and sales of "Poor Richard's Almanack" skyrocketed. Leeds did not die, of course, as predicted but Franklin (Saunders) hilariously stood his ground in future issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Choice Morsels Of Wisdom
Franklin's timeless compilation of whit and wisdom is truly a classic. The book contains some of the most interesting and impressive collection of comments that Franklin was able to put in this compendium. While many are ascribed to Franklin, he specifically does not take credit for the adages himself.Rather, he indicates that they are commonly utilized comments and expressions of the vernacular.

5-0 out of 5 stars American Ephemeris for the 21st Century 1900-2000 at Noon
Very, very good reference guide to have on hand for checking planets, sun, moon placements for friends, relatives, and co-workers. It is also surprisingly easy to use and is an excellent tool to have on hand for astrological use.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best...
I've been teaching astrology since 1978 and have found over the years that students will always make fewer mistakes using a NOON based ephemeris rather than midnight based. If you're starting to learn the math for astrology this is a very good ephemeris to go with. Eventually you'll probably buy them all, because they all have pluses and minuses. Neil Michelsen was a Virgo's Virgo for accuracy and his numbers can be relied on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for all ages!
I had borrowed this book from our local library and was very impressed. There's so much information in it and so many great pictures...it is worth having on your shelf and you will refer to it often as you look up historical words or questions you run into, your children can use it for school...It is the only book of this kind, that I could find, that has the entire history and is not concentrating on just one time-period or subject abt. American history. I also bought the "world history" one from National Georaphic. It is a great price and I haven't seen it at this price anywhere else (trust me I've done some research before buying). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INVALUABLE TOOL FOR WHOSE WHO IN WASHINGTON!
My 1996 edition is so dog-eared, highlighted, and noted that you can tell it's one of my most common reference tools.I use it when politicians are on talk shows, to give me an idea of where they are coming from. It usuallyproves there is a huge media imbalance of views on network television, soI've switched to C-Span. Seeing a voting record clues me in on where aCongressman is likely to stand on an issue, before he opens his mouth. Iuse it for background information, and to send faxes and letters.I use itto keep track of my own Congressmen and to find others who have voted theway I would vote, to contact, if an important issue is pending for a vote. It's only big handicap is a lack of E-Mail addresses.I could do much morewith it, if I had them.I highly recommend this book and am saving for anupdated version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read; Great Tool
This 384-page almanac is chocked full of articles with daily info on moon phases and other needed info. I like the listing of the days instead of trying to cram all the info into a calendar form. The articles or chapters, are all well written and can be read within a half hour for most so it is easy to pick this book up, pick a spot within the book and just read. You don't need to start on page 1 and probably shouldn't! I'm now going to look for 2006 just to read all the articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to read every day
This Book is great to read for anyone with an inspired mind, I love the fact that you can read one page, full of facts each day of the year. Highly recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every day in every way we are getting a little bit better
Ben Franklin exemplifies one kind of American spirit. The historian Daniel Boorstin said that the greatness of America was in the small improvements it continually provided to everyday life, the spirit of invention. Ben Franklin built a lot of different kinds of better mousetraps, including bifocals, the postal service, and a whole way of thinking about improving the self day - by- day.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Rate and Compare World History Atlas Books
As a reader I like to have quick reference books at my finger tips including a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary about 3500 pages long - that I use almost daily. So I decided to add a "history atlas". In the process of doing my research I read the other amazon.com reviewers and then made three trips to two large book stores to actually look at the books and get a better feel for which was the best. I ended up buying the Oxford Atlas of World History. Here are my picks and rankings.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Election Results = Worst Edition Ever!!
Every Christmas since I was 11 I have gotten this book as a gift. Last year was no different but I am really pissed off that the company was too lazy to wait for the November 2 Election Results. This was the same terrible decision they made for the 2003 issue. They must suppose us peons can get the information online now. But the great thing about the Almanac is that you could read about the elections w/o being near a computer.
