5-0 out of 5 stars Pairing the World Almanac data with maps and 3-D shading
'Another atlas?' many will sigh - but wait, this is something far different. For one its plastic spiral binding assumes it'll be used for easy lay-flat access, lending it to quick consultations without the restraints of the usual atlas binding. For another, it provides a satisfying blend of geography facts with an atlas format, pairing the World Almanac data with maps and 3-D shading. Yes, HAMMOND WORLD ALMANAC 2006 WORLD ATLAS will prove a shelving challenge for libraries: but it lends exceptionally well to home reference and will prove an eye-catching display item.
5-0 out of 5 stars This almanac is a magnificent achievement to be savored and repeatedly enjoyed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old Reliable Almanac
I've purchased the Old Farmer's Almanac for several years and have always enjoyed them. The weather information is amazingly accurate! The gardening information is very helpful and the trivia articles are always interesting. It's imposssible to read one and not learn something. It's a fun read, at the very least.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Gardeners
My parents wouldn't think of planting their garden without consulting the Old Farmer's Almanac for the sign of the moon. They have great success following the guidelines for when to plant root crops, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive almanac, great price
Can't beat the price for this very complete almanac. Over 1000 pages of interesting world facts. Everything from world news (for 2005), world history, geography, Academy Awards, science, business, as well as complete lists of sporting event winners (Olympics, football, baseball, etc. like Michael J. Fox used in "Back to the Future"), and much much more.

Editorial Review

Few people, writes Scott Weidensaul, are apathetic toward raptors. Once you've seen a hawk or a falcon or an eagle in action, you're likely to take an interest in how these great birds of prey make their homes in the world. If that interest has seized you--and well it should--then Weidensaul's encyclopedic guidebook to the world's principal raptor species, well illustrated with photographs, maps, and charts and full of detailed information, is an ideal companion.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
This book is a great book for people who want to learn more about raptors. It is a lot of information that is very useful, and like the title indicates, this book is quite comprehensive. I would recommend this book in addition to Raptors by John Hendrickson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with fine details any avid birder will relish
This exquisite guide will find a home in any public library and many a personal library: it covers over 300 species of raptors, blending the latest natural history facts and scientific research with photos and details of the birds in nature. From population and distribution statistics to accounts of items recovered from nests and nesting habits, Raptor Almanac is packed with fine details any avid birder will relish.

3-0 out of 5 stars A clarification from the author
Potential buyers need to be aware that this volume is a reissue of my 1996 book "Raptors: The Birds of Prey," which the publisher has released with a new title and cover art, but with no changes to the content. I am embarrassed to see that they have promoted it as though it was a new book; while I'm pleased the book is again in print, I believe they should have been more forthright in making clear that it is a reissue instead of an entirely new work -- Scott Weidensaul. (Ignore the star rating, please -- the review would not post without it.) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hardly a shadow of the old Gun Gun Digest
Every year the new owners of Gun Digest put fewer and fewer articles in the book. 2007 seems to be the new low. Mostly it is now just a collection of canned catalog specs with many editing errors. After all, they don't have to pay anyone for that. The articles they do have are major boring. Nothing like the pre-2000 Gun Digest when Ken Warner was still the editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gun Digest
This book is very informative. Information is easy to find on the subjects. Well worth the time to look it over.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment
As a very long-time GD reader, I have seen good issues and fair issues. This is the first issue that I would consider poor.Editorial content is weak to the extreme, and there is little of interest for the gun enthusiast beyond updates of what's new on the market. The first article is about the .400 Brown Whelan (Why should anyone care?) The second is about modification of a Ruger #1 to .32-40.This is a pure vanity piece, of no interest unless for some strange reason you want to do the same. The third article is entitled "The Automatic Question," which sort of covers the development of semi-automatic sporting arms, touching on the question of advantages over other types of arms over the years. It's only mildly interesting. The next is a long story about the Bowie Knife.Maybe I'm mistaken, but this is not the "Knife Digest."Following is a story about "Premium Bullet Performance."The conclusion is simply that they are all pretty good. Ho-Hum. Next is a long picture piece on engraved weapons.Fine if you like pretty pictures, otherwise, a yawner. Next is a very long article covering the last 60 years of revolver development. It's moderately interesting.I think you get the idea.Anyway, it seems the effort was more on publishing a lot of slick pages in full color than in offering interesting articles that used to be GD's stock in trade. If I could return my copy to Amazon for a refund, I would. My assessment is simple - donate the cost of a copy of GD 2006 to the NRA.Your money will be much better spent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Swingin' 60's Strike Again!
What a groovy book, baby!I was only three years old in 1966 but I remember just about everything in this delightful scrapbook that's a time capsule for everything from that hip decade.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Time Machine
"Hal Lifson's 1966" is, indeed, the ultimate time machine. It works on two distinct levels.First, having lived in the San Fernando Valley during that period, I found the book to be the most delightful, teary-eyed journey back to the old stomping grounds...who says you can't go back home?!To see a picture of the old Encino Bowl...the last time I even thought about it was when I was sneaking a smoke in the parking lot on the way back from ELEMENTARY school!Second, and more important (yes, important), "Hal Lifson's 1966" captures the innocence of the period...perhaps the last innocence the country enjoyed before it was forced to grow up during the Watergate hearings.Indeed, the lack of any political references keeps the journey a magical mystery tour.Honey West, Catwoman, NANCY SINATRA...many a 13-year-old boy lost his innocence "appreciating" these classically sexy women. Thanks, Hal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!
Hal Lifson took me on a journey that was so exciting, I couldn't stand it!From Batman to The Monkees to the Beach Boys song "Wouldn't It Be Nice", I feel like I've relived my childhood all over again. Now if I only had my Batman utility belt again....Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential pediatric reference
This is the essential pediatric reference, particularly for medications. It's easily used, and gives most critical information in a concise format. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Harriet Lane Handbook-15th edition
A "must" for any medical student doing a peds or family practice rotation.Helpful for any residents dealing with kids on their rotations. This book has updated drug information and doses, with more information on the specific drugs and their uses. This is especially helpful for patients with less common disorders that require special meds, such as prilosec & lasix. It also includes dosages for over the counter meds, such as cold medicines. Treatments for newborn sepsis (various ages and categories) are covered, and as usual, techniques for procedures and normal values for tests and labs are included. No pediatric ward or clinic should be without one.I am suspensefully awaiting the newest edition, which will hopefully include the dosages for more of the newer drugs, such as Tamiflu, and especially some of the antipsychotics and antidepressants used, but not necessarily FDA approved, in pediatrics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to carry in your lab coat while on peds

5-0 out of 5 stars Focus on the problem.
Regardless of your political views, opinions about globalization, or general predisposition to the World Bank, the WDR 2004 is an essential publication addressing the issues of poverty and equity in health, education, and socioeconomic terms. Not only are the issues of equity being raised on an international level but intranationally as well. The WDR 2004 takes on the issues and problems that are increasing the disparity between the haves and have-nots within a given country.Without prejudice or preference, this report discusses the failures of institutions, national and multinational, in making the necessary strides to address poverty and the plight of the poor. This report is one of the most comprehensive resources available right now for understanding and responding to the issues of provision and access for the poor to proper healthcare, education, sanitation, clean water and electricity.

Let's not forget, some 40,000 children die every day from hunger or hunger-related diseases - all in countries that have been under the thumb of the World Bank for years. Enough is enough.
