Excellent photos, difficult reading
Although the photos of beads are excellent, I found this book far too much like a PhD dissertation, with the feel of a synthesis, having substance but written in a format which was difficult to read. Bibliographic references imbedded in the text just add to the unreadable style. The text is painfully lacking in the kind of information I appreciate, such as dating, geography, and clear references to the individual beads presented in the photos. And references to values of beads in dollars has no relevant meaning unless there is a time reference. As a reference book I would rate it of minimal worth. As a coffee table amusement it is acceptable, but would need far more photos to make it useful for that purpose.

Beautiful Book But Not For Beginners
This is a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated book, however, it is definitely for the advanced bead collector.Its main focus is on beads the average person could not find or afford. I am a beginner in the bead collecting world and needed a book that was more of an identifying guide.The chances of me running across a bead that was illegally excavated from an archeological dig in a foreign country are slim..and I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.I'm returning the book and continuing the search.

A stunning work of art.
This is a work of immense proportions. Robert Liu is both a scholar and an artist.This is a work which draws on both sets of skills, and the result is wonderful.For bead lovers it's a definative work.As a scholarlypiece, it likely has material of interest to those interested in arthistory and world culture as well.It's an important book and one thatwould be sorely missed if it ever went out of print--I say this as onewho's passed on books like this, only to search the world over for themwhen they were no longer available...get this one now. Picture the poor, young, serious-fiction writer. He toils alone at a pace not so different from that of Lincoln Tunnel traffic at rush hour in New York. His spouse has a "real" job, or perhaps he has a trust fund. His college friends are cashing in on their dot-coms and wondering if he's ever going to join the real world. He is not hell-bent on publication; he is trying to write "serious, honest fiction, the kind of novel that readers will find they enjoy reading more than once, the kind of fiction likely to survive."He's likely to have no idea whether he's succeeding. Gardner the master
Gardner seems always aware that he is a master and he views the readers of his books on craft as students as well as disciples.While he offers much guidance to the novice writer, the book serves best as a reminder that we what we are doing is not some vain hobby, not some time-waster as others may think it to be.This book reminds us that our efforts are worthy of the time spent and that we are not alone in our quest.At the same time that we need stories to excite and inspire us, we need to be reminded of why it is we do what we do.And it's also helpful for us to be reminded of the discipline necessary for our labor.Unfortunately, the author falls into that same creative writing teacher trap of trying to weed out those unworthy.He wants to be sure that in attempting this that we are up to the task.At the same time, that talk can be discouraging to those sensitive writer-types who are by nature filled with self-doubt.

Honest book. No coddling.

Truly the Last Frontier
As a rural Alaskan in the Arctic, I think winter is a great time to publish the 29th edition of the Alaska Almanac. It can warm up even the coldest, darkest night with a mixture of facts about the 49th State, mixed in with biting barbs of wit from Mr.Whitekeys, a noted Alaskan humorist.

Is "the work" not as good or has Graphis stumbled a step or two?
The last Graphis Advertising that I bought was the 2000 annual (every place I've worked at since then had a copy for me to check out).Well, the first thing I noticed was that the 2006 annual had fewer pages of content (i.e., good ads).So I'm wondering, is the ad industry putting out less good work, did fewer entities submit work for consideration/publication, or has Graphis just gone downhill?In any case, I'm feeling lukewarm about this purchase.One fact I know for sure: the binding company did a crummy job of binding my 2006 annual -- the book was falling off its spine after I looked through it only once!

Don't leave home without it!
This is a superb reference work.I note, with some surprise, that there is a spate of negative reviews, which all involve (1) printing the flags in black-and-white (2) the Vatican (3) Yugoslavia.I don't think that any of these issues is important.
Flawed edition of a great reference
In 1995, my high school history teacher gave me a copy of the World Factbook. It has information about every area in the world including all UN Members, colonies of nations (Puerto Rico, Aruba, American Samoa), and areas under dispute (West Bank, Gaza Strip, Taiwan, Western Sahara), and the five oceans. I have used the book for six years since then. This leads us to this edition. This edition is in black and white. Because of this flaw, you cannot tell the colors in the various flags. The publisher left out a series of maps that are published in the back of the Factbook. Despite what the publisher says, this leaves the Factbook imcomplete. Another flaw is that the publisher dates the previous years Factbook with the next years date. This could leave users confused. A previous review faulted this edition for having the former Yugoslavia as 'Serbia and Montenegro'. There is a reason for this. Until Slobodan Milosevic's defeat in the 2000 Yugoslav elections, the US Government acknowledged the fact that Serbia and Montenegro, the two remaining republics left of the old communist Yugoslavia (the four other republics had left the former Yugoslavia by 1991-92) had formed the a nation, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). In saying that, the US felt the FRY was not the replacement for the old communist Yugoslavia. The CIA, being apart of the government followed suit. Another review claims the World Factbook does not have Vatican City. In fact, the book has the Vatican under the name of Holy See. The reason the Holy See is not under the name of Vatican City is that the Holy See and Vatican City are two different entities. The Holy See is the center of the Catholic church. Itsigns treaties and sends diplomats to various countries. The Vatican owns the Holy See's property but doesn't sign treaties and send diplomats around the world because it chooses not to. Because of this, the latter is listed. You can't fault them for these things. The bottom line: go to the CIA site first to preview the factbook before you buy. If you decide to buy, get the Factbook from the government and not this flawed edition.

Complete Wast of Money
If you like tables, charts, graphs, and maps, this is not the book for you. Everything in the book is available for free on the CIA website. Check out the website before you decide to buy the book, so you can see how little (in the way of anything interesting, useful, or detailed) the book offers. ... Read more

Hard to use
There is a lot of data; but there is no index. Be prepared to go through page after page of data in search for what you are looking for.

Very disappointing revision:
I bought the 2006 edition of this book automatically, as I have for a number of years.I am extremely disappointed with the totally revised content, as I find it much more difficult to use.While it would seem logical to group the records together as done in the new volume, it just doesn't work for me.The old layout of team info, with each team starting at the top of a page, has been junked, and the results are not pretty.Furthermore, this is now just a record book; the old "facts" sections, including a review of the preceding season and a preview of the new season, have disappeared.I'm keeping my 2005 edition and trashing the 2006.I hope Sporting News comes to their senses and arranges the 2007 edition like the 2005 and prior editions."It wasn't broke, but they 'fixed' it anyway." ... Wonderful Reference Book
National Geographic Almanac of World History is a wonderful resource. The Chronological Chapters, Maps, Time-lines and Introductory Threads are easy to use. A very nice addition to add to your library.

I Rate and Compare World History Atlas Books
As a reader I like to have quick reference books at my finger tips including a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary about 3500 pages long - that I use almost daily. So I decided to add a "history atlas". In the process of doing my research I read the other amazon.com reviewers and then made three trips to two large book stores to actually look at the books and get a better feel for which was the best. I ended up buying the Oxford Atlas of World History. Here are my picks and rankings.
